I and the farmer must now look to someother source for his posts Perhapsdirectly on his farm there may be apatch of woods which includes suchtrees as black oak beech maple orpine and cottonwoods and willowsmay grow along the banks of hisstreams These are trees which here-tofore

have been thought of little orno use for posts because of the rapid-ity

with which they are attacked bydecay In their natural conditionthey will rot in two or three yearstoo soon to pay for the labor of set ¬

ting them The Forest Service in itsI study of prolonging the life of fenceI posts has found cheap and simplemethods of preserving them in asound condition for an indefinite timetho they are the poorest and natur¬

ally least durable woodsDecay Is not a simple process like

the crumbling of stone or the rusting-of Iron It in caused by low forms ofplant life which thoroughly permeate-the wood discolor it and cause It tobecome disconnected and rotten Topreserve the timber in a thoroughlysound condition it is only necessary-to render the wood unfit for thegrowth of these organisms This isdone by injecting into it substancespoiionouu to plant life

is creosote one of the byproduts of coal tar When it is injectedinto the wood decay will be retardedindefinitely and an oldfield pine orcottonwood fence post when properlytreated will easily give a life of twen-ty

treatment costs about ten centsper post The creosote can be appliedby painting the wood with a brush ordipping it Into the liquid but muchhotter results will be obtained if it isactually Injected into the wood in-

+ of merely coating the outsideIf the brush method or painting Isused the creosote should be appliedat a temperature of about ISO degreesF Two coats should be given atleast twentyfour hours apart If theposts are dipped directly Into the pre ¬
