GREAT INDUSTRY IN DANGER Resolutions Passed at a Meeting of the Leading Cigar Manufacturers- of Tampa Tampa Tribune April 7 At a special meeting of the cigar manufacturers of Tampa Ybor City I and Wrest Tampa called by Enrique Fondas one of the leading cigar men oi the city and held last evening at the Spanish casino In Ybor City strong resolutions were passed call ing attention of the people of and Florida as well to the conditions which will prevail in Tampa if the state goes dry and the menace state prohibition will prove to the cigar in ¬ dustry of Tampa I Fqr several months in fact since the prohibition agitation first began the people of Tampa have discussed the natters touched upon in these reso ¬ lutions their attention has been di- rected ¬ to the matters through the press and by public speakers yet the official confiimation was lacking until this action one of unanimity on the part of the manufacturers at the meeting last night made thestand of the cigarmakers clear and voiced in no uncertain terms the results of pro- hibition ¬ upon the sommunity The Resolutions Passed The resolutions follow Whereas There is now being agi- tated in the state of Florida the ques ¬ tion of state prohibition which we re ¬ gard as the o great and serious menace to the state of Florida par ¬ ticularly to the county of Hillsbor ough and- Whereas The cigar industry of this county produces annually a product worth approximately twenty millions- of onethird of the total products of the state as it only produces sixty million dollars annu ¬ ally and- Whereas The people engaged in this cigar industry manufacturers and employes are nearly all Span ¬ iards Italians and Cubanspeople- ho are lawabiding temperate in every respect and who use but do not abuse the use of wines and liquors light wines being used by the Latin race as coffee and tea is being used bj the Americans and Vhereas These people having been used for generations to so use wines and liquors and never dreamed that any effort would be made in a suppos- ed ¬ free country to deprive them of the right of eating drinking what the see fit the successful consumma ¬ tion of which they would regard as an unwarranted invasion of their per- sona ¬ liberties and w uld probably re- sent ¬ to such a degree as that we would be unable to maintain the in ¬ dustry here should prohibition be en ¬ forced and- Whereas We think we know the situation and the consequent loss to the city of Tampa the county of Hillsborough and the state of Florida that would follows the enactment of such an unwise unortunate and sui- cidal ¬ law therefore- Be Its Resolved First That we deem- it our duty to call the attention of the people of this county and the state- o Florida to this serious situation as wfc see it No Threats Made Second That while we do not make any threats that in the event state prohibition is enacted we wiil leave I here because we are citizens of Flor ¬ ida and are making this state bur home and have as much loYaJt for Fldrida as any other citizen of it yet wo feel tat because of the traditions and opinions of the Latin race on this matter that we would absolutely be unable to maintain the industry in this state should state prohibition be enacted Third That we located our industry- in this state under the local option clause of the constitution of this state which permitted the people of each county to settle this question for them- selves and the citizens who original- ly ¬ welcomed and aided in the locaton- of the indu trt here proposed and guaranteed that our people would be permitted to liVe and enjoy themsel- evs and eats and drink as they were accustomed to do in their home coun ¬ try and good faith v demands a com- pliance ¬ of the promises under which unions of dollars are now invested in this country- Not Politics But Business Interest Fourth That we never Interfere with the politics of this state and are content to live under any officers that the people of this state may see fit to elect but we do demand that having left our mother country and made our hr roes and invested our all in s this promising state that we shoUld be permitted to follow the customs under which we and our ancestors have been reared Fifth That we cannot too strongly- call 1 to the attention of the people of the state the serious condition that confronts them Sixth That copies of these resolu ¬ tions be furnished the Associated Press of the state generally More News from New England States- If any one has any doubt as to thet virtue of Foleys Kidney Cure they need
