INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT ON THE ACCOUNTS
Report to the trustees/ members of Rye Lane Baptist Chapel on the accounts for the year ended 31st December 2018 set out
on pages 6 to 12.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not
required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination
is needed.
It is my responsibility to:examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given hy the Charity Commission (under section
145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and
to state whether particular matters have come to my attention
Basis of independent examiner's statement
My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination
includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those
records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from
the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be
required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair' view and the
report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention
1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements:
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements ofthe Charities Act
have not been met; or
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be
reached.

INTRODUCE)IItRye Lane Chapel is a multi-ethnic congregation affiliated to the London Baptist Association. the
Baptist Union of Great Britain and the Evangelical Alliance. It is sited on Rye Lane, Peckham, wheieit seeks to live out its evangelical stance in worship, witness and welcome, broadly along the lines ofBaptist principles,
The year 2018 was dominated by the Chapel's celebration of its bicentenary, centred on the theme of"Celebrating God: Faithful through the years. "
Permit me, therefore, to begin this report v;ith the activities of the bicentenary before focusing on thereyilar activities of worship. fellowship, Bible study, prayer, outreach and missions.
IklCKNTK&NNj. AL CKLKSRAT10%The Bicentennial Corninittee, formed in 2017, developed a year-long agenda of events to celebrateGod's faithfulness in maintaining a 200-years witness to himself through Rye Lane Chapel. Our aim
was that he alone should receive the glory, that he would be the central focus, but that we would bedrawn together in the awe of knowing thnt we belong to an awesome father, a glorious king.
Congregants vvere encouraged to identify with the commemoration by v earing tee-shirts that werespecifically designed and produced for the bicentenary. at least on the last Sunday of each month.Parishioners were also challenged to give to the disadvantaged via a monthly target of at least twohundred (200} UIlits of food ltcnls, hai vest ltcnls ancl shoe boxes. Tllc only IIloflths cxcIYlpt wcicOctober and December and the target was always exceeded. Additionally, the Community GospelChoir was birthed, under the direction of Thea %ray, to include those with nn interest in singing.
The bi-monthly celebration of our diversity, as we focused on the food and dress of different
continents, did not ahvays follow the plan but was, nevertheless, a woithwhilc experience.
In January, we installed a photographic display of various aspects of the Chapel's life to coincidewith the Peace Service which was held to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of theChapel's bombing. This v'as followed in February with the regular %omen's Ministry Valentinedinner, this time enhanced by a ensemble of teenage classical musicians. March's highlight was theLondon Af6. can Gospel Choir vvith its high energy performance meed April saw a team of cony egantsattending Spring Harvest. In June, we celebrated in a we!1-attended first Anniversary service, with its
joyful and anointed atmosphere and an apt message from the team leader of the London BaptistAssociation. The anniversary service was followed by a week of evangelism„which although not
delivering on expectations, nevertheless provided some timer of a strong sense of the Lord' s
presence. Also, v,'e were blessed by the presence of Southwark Councillor, Peter Babadu, and theSaltmine presentation of Darkness Falls based on the gospel of John. July*s Holiday Club climaxedwith a Picnic in the Park on Saturday and in August, we celebrated with Kingslcy %ray in a reggaeconcert that sealed his reputation as a crowd-pleasing, but godly, performer. The Community GospelChoir sang at September's Harvest service and in October, the inaugiiral Bicentennial Bible Quizattracted contestants from two neighbouring churches also, Our shoebox efforts, in November, farexceeded the target of tv o hundred, thanks to the generosity of those who faithfully supported this

effort. The year climaxed with the second Anniversary Service on December 30'" and a really
anointed time of celebration on December 31. We are thankful for a year that celebrated some ofwho our Lord is and I want to record my personal thanks to a cornrnittee who planned and persevered
in fulfilling their mandate.
WORSIIII'The aim is that our lives should become instruments of continuous worship so that the Chapel's sung
and spoken worship is only an expression of who we are. Untler the leadership of Music Director,
Thea Wray, and the members of the music ministry, we enjoyed wonderful times of sung worship.
The different groups, too, often include singing and music as a part of their programmes.
BIBIK STlJOYThe knowledge of God's word is foundational to our discipleship programme and this was expressed
through the teachings encapsulated in our sermons, our Care Groups' Bible Studies, our Sunday
School teaching programmes as well as through the Men'r Ministry and Women's Ministry.
Additionally, the Word Power Bible teaching sessions focused on the prophecy of Hosea. There is
also a constant encouragement, through the groups and from the pulpit, for congregants to spend
quality quiet times with the Lord and to focus on portions of the Bible during these periods.
PRAYER
Prayer continued to be a vital part of the Chapel's plan and war a past of every group. Additionally,
the Chapel hosted five prayer slots in its programme: Sunday's early morning prayer meeting and
after-service ministry prayer time; Monday, Wednesday and Friday 7am prayers; Tuesday's 10:30am prayer meeting; our termly weeks of prayer and fasting; and the monthly night vigils. Prayer is
also a component of all services and meetings.
OUTREACH A%0 MlSSIOWS
The ".. .go into all the world . . ." of Matthev ZS takes on flesh in the outreach and missions
programme of the Rye Lane Chapel ministry. The monthly Sunday outreach continued to focus on
music and Bible reading with a concluding prayer and benediction for Peckham.
Friday outreach also continued with the faithful involvement of a core group of congregants. The"Good News" newspapers continued to be a hit with passers-by and we were especially pleased by
the number of people from other faiths who were willing to accept a copy. The regular visitors who
come into the Chapel and take the opportumty to pray, share and enjoy some refreshment continued,
as did the random others who joined them. We continue to yearu and pray that these would come into
a relationship with the living Christ.
The Holiday Club, seventeen years in its current format, continued to attract a number of children
and young people, some from un-churched backgrounds. We plant and water the seeds of the gospel,
hoping that a rich hat~ est will be gleaned from this sowing.
Our mission activities spanned a range of four (4) local and seven (7) overseas ministries that include
work with orphanages, general outreach, theological and Christian education, prison ministry,
education, social outreach, youth focus and crisis counselling in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia-
Pacific, to the tune of thirteen thousand, three hundred and fifty pounds (/13, 350).
The Mission Support Team also published a compilation of missionaries' stories, "Into all the
world"„ to coincide with the Bicentenary.
Page 4 )'ear Ended 3tstDecewber2(il8
FELLOWSHIP and SOCIAL ACTIVITIESThere is a strong sense of fellowship among the congregants of the Chapel as evidenced by the after-
seivice sessions of refreshment that gave congregants the opportiinity to connect with each other and
to share on life events from the previous week. Our refreshmeiit teams continue to do an excellent
job of providing drinks and tasty tidbits, often enhanced by the occasional addition provided in
thankfulness for a baby dedication, a birthday or some other significant event.
The Chapel's 2018 outing was to Eastbourne and a notable feature was the bonding of smaller
groups of congregants as they enjoyed the sea breezes and the shopping.
Other social activities included the congregational bring and share rrieals, the Valentine dinner and
events organised by specific groups for their members and invitees. The Men's ministry is
particularly good at this with its popular woodland rambles and the football inatches for which theyorganize reasonably-priced tickets. Some Care Groups also celebrate special events in the lives of'
their members and organize social outings.
PROI'KRTY
The propeiiies at 59a Rye Lane and Ns 1 k 2 Cerise Road were maintained in reasonable condition, with re-decoration at P2 Cerise Road being completed by our resident builder, Miguel Richards.
The flat at 59a Rye Lane was rented and Harte's Meat Shop continued to be exemplary tenants in the
premises beneath the flat. Number 2 Cerise Road continued to be teiinnted by congregants,
During 2018, we also embarked on a series of investigatory forays into the options for making theChapel premises more financially-, usage-, and community- viable. This process is ongoing.
LEGAL 0:BLIGATIONSDuiing 2018, Rye Lane Chapel was able to meet its legal obligations with regards to rates and taxes,Safeguarding, Health and Safety and Human Resources.
CONGRKGATIONAL MOVKMKNT
In 2018 it was our privilege to dedicate two (2) babies to the Lord.~ Seven (7) baptized believers apphed„were interviewed, and accepted into membership,
Three (3) of our members —Danie Sisya, Loretta Rogers and Claudine Carter - were called to
higher service. .Danie tragically passed away in Zambia. Both Sisters Loretta and Oaudineattained their ninth decade before passing on. We were especially blessed and challenged by SisClaudine's faithful commitment to the work at the Chapel.
COMMUNITY INVOLVKMKNTIn 2018, a congregation under the leadership of Peruvian pastor, Fernando Castro, began sharing our
space as it reached out and ministered to the local Spanish and Latin American population.
We have also continued to make our building available for rental to Nick Dolezal, a ward councillorand to the National Blood Service. There are, too, additional one-off requests for private functions.
We further involve ourselves in community life through our availability to offer spiritual. and
practical ministry in the form ofbaby dedications, funerals, memorial services and for other needs.
FINANCK
In 2018, we met our financial obligations with a surplus of foity one thousand pounds (X41„000) to
carry over into 2019. For this, we continue to be grateful to God, to you, our faithful supporters, and
to our treasurer, Mrs Marcia Cooke and her team, for their astute management of the finances.Page 5 )'ear Ended 31st Deeennnen 2018
EVALUATION
There is much for which to be thankful in 2018. The Bicentennial Celebration was a huge unifying
factor and there seemed to be a new level of love and fellowship among congregants. There was, too„
an evident spiritual hunger and growing maturity in many lives and many more of' us have become
involved in different aspects of the ministry at the Chapel. I am thankful to the Lord for the eagerness
with which you have embraced your roles and faithfully and competently discharged responsibilities.
Permit nie, here„ to pay tribute to Mrs Kemi Bakare who came forward to offer her services wherever
it was needed and who now faithfully cleans specialist areas in the Chapel.
PROJKCTIONIn 2019, Rye Lane Chapel will experience a period of pastoral transition. A leadership team will
oversee this process and plans are in place to make this transition as seamless as possible. The
assessment of the future of the Chapel's buildings and premises is ongoing but there are some
immediate plans to develop the Chapel and introduce features to make it more user-friendly.
THANKS
As I mentioned in the 2017 report, our God and his submitted people form a pov erful combination.
We are grateful for the unity of the Spiiit in the bond of peace and the fellowship that we share. We
thank the Loid for shepherding us but I also want to thank you, the people of the grace covenant„ for
the ways in which you have contributed to the building up of God*s kingdom.
As this will be my last report to you, I want, also, to thank you for theblessing that you have been tome and my family and the ways in which you have ministered grace into our lives. May you be
iichly blessed as you continue to submit yourself to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
COCCI USION"%ho is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty —he is the King of glory!"Encapsulated in these words are the identity, status and the attributes of our loving God. The wonder
of knowing him is that we are never at a loss to find things for which we can praise and thank him,
but especially for the ways in which he warms our hearts and surrounds us with his love. He is
awesome, this Father-King! He is almighty, this Lord of ours, and our never ending praises are
entirely owing to his works in our lives. Truly he has been and will continue to be faithful through
the years!Paul's exhortation to the Corinthian church is a fitting response to this God and King: "Therefore,
my dear brothers (and sisters) stand firm. Let notliing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the
work of the Lord because you know that your labour, in the Lord, is not in vain. "
May our lives be a fitting tii bute to our Lord and King.
