By Fran Divorty
Where was he born?
• Ryan McGinley was born into a middle class American family in New Jersey in 1977 He is the youngest of eight children
• He started studying Graphic Design at Parsons School of
Design in 1995 • Form an early age his peers and mentors were skateboards,
graffiti writers, musicians and artists • In 1998 he start to make photographs of his friends and
produced a handmade book called ‘The Kids are Alright’ which went on to be exhibited in 2003 in the Whitney Museum of American Art.
What is special about him
• McGinley’s message in his photography is that it does not matter if you are a skater, graffiti artist, Gay or straight its an new age and he wants to show all of it no matter what culture background his friends are from
• The only technical part of his photography I could find is that he shoots on a 35mm film, but I’m not sure if that is all the time.
