We began in the summer of 1980, when community leader Jon Lundin, (then RVC’s Director of Continuing Education), established Whiz Kids College. While originally conceived as a summer “college” for students with high academic abilities, Rock Valley College Whiz Kids quickly widened its programming to include any youth with a zest for learning.

Gelli Prints (Ages 7-12) Pronounced like “Jelly,” but spelled with a “G,” What fun you’ll have making your own printing block out of plain unfla-vored gelatin. In the second class, you’ll learn how to add paint to your gelli block, create a design, and print onto paper and a piece of clothing. Bring a pre-washed t-shirt (no fabric softener, please) with you to class.

Bling Bling!(Ages 7-12) Try a new spin for the “basic” candle holder. Start by painting and antiquing the container to create a base then add beads, shells and a variety of fun materials to it to make it your own. Work with local artist Norm Knott to morph simple jars and containers into blinged out candle holders!

aRTrageous Pen & ink(Ages 7-12) Bet you never thought you could create a totally unique piece of art with a sopping wet piece of paper! Working with local artist Norm Knott, you will start by drawing a composition with ink onto a wet piece of paper and watch as the ink flows into an organic shape. Get more detailed by using watercolors, ink and collage to fill in your drawing and make it you own. The ambitious might even complete more than one piece!

Screen Printing for Kids(Ages 7-12) In this fun class, you’ll learn the easiest form of screen-printing that is totally kid friendly! Items easily found in arts and crafts shops along with standard printing inks will be used to create the screens and print on both fabric and paper. Bring a pre-washed t-shirt to class with you.

Handbuilding with Clay(Parent/Grandparent with child) This is a fun for youngsters who like creativity with messy material. The teacher will give basic step by step instructions for clay building. Students will add their personal touches to make each piece very original. The handbuild-ing techniques of pinching, coiling and using slabs will be taught. Students will make small sculptures and utility objects. Color will be applied as well as clear glaze, then the pieces will be fired in a kiln. Kids will be able to pick up the finished pieces within a week of the class ending.

Sewing (Ages 9-14) Learn to sew simple garments and read and follow a pattern guide. You can use your own sewing machine or use one that is provided for you. Learn easy ways to hem, put in zippers, sleeves and much more by the end of the class. NOTE: For those adults who want to take this great class with your child/grandchild. Both adult and child must register (although strongly suggested, class does not require an adult to attend with child). First class, students will meet at classroom, then we’ll travel to local fabric store to make supply purchases.

(Grades 1-3) Students will use our unique LEGO® kits to build a variety of battling machines. This is a class of exploration, problem solving, and risk-taking with a goal of learning and experimenting with how machines work and compete. Students will learn a variety of concepts throughout this class, including basic engineering principles, gearing and gear ratios, electric motors and energy, problem solving, and communication skills NOTE: Students do not get to bring home any of the Lego projects they create.

digital filmmaking - Beginning(Grades 4-8) Bring your ideas from script to screen! Work in groups where you’ll write a script, plan for a shoot, shoot, direct, and edit the film. miSS Val, a licensed Musikgarten instructor, brings 12 years of experience teaching music and a love of young children to these joyful and fun classes. Singing, both structured and free dancing, plus instrument play foster a love of music, natural to all children. Develops the basic skills needed for formal music study at a later age. Students will make a rock collection. They should begin collecting in September and October when the weather is good. Suggestions and materials will be given for recording the source of their specimens. Students will participate in Earth Science Week activities at the museum.

Home School Class:Exploring the Earth(Ages 10 & Up) Students will study matter, the phases of matter and the interaction of matter and energy. They will use Landsat images to measure the area flooded by the Mississippi River

Home School Class:Problem Solving in Geo Science(Ages 10 & Up) Students will explore early geoscience theories and their respective scientists. They will examine topographic maps and make a profile from the topographic map.

aiEllO, RONG is a native Chinese. She had a bachelor’s degree from a renowned university in China with a major in English Language and Literature. She taught English as a second language in a college in China for six years. She came to the U.S. in 2003, and has been teaching Chinese since. She has taught Chinese at Ray Chinese School and Language Stars Schools in Naperville, IL, and is now a middle and high school Chinese teacher at Rockford Christian Schools, Rockford, IL.

faTHEad filmS began with two cousins captured by the magic and passion of movies. Keith and Justin Romine began writing and producing films as teenagers and now collaborate talent, creativ-ity, and passion into Fathead Films. Both hold BA degrees in Film from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where they studied under some great names in film and television including, Academy Award nominated actor Tony Curtis, writer Sean Clark, and film director David Schmoeller. They currently produce short films and a feature film.

Master Ha is highly recognized for his continued contributions in the martial arts and carries a strong set of credentials (including T.K.D. Children Personality Develop-ment Association founder, U.S. National Collegiate Taekwondo

Team Head Coach (2009), and Commissioner of USA Taekwondo Martial Arts Commission). He was a professor in the Korea Third Military Academy as well as an Education Training Officer in the Korea Armed forces Athletic Corps and Director of the World Taekwondo Research Society. He has been recently awarded with the U.S.A. Presidential Physical fitness Award for his outstanding contribution to and achievement in the world of USA Tae kwon do (2009). laNGSHOlT, iNGER is a well-respected private instruction piano teacher, instrumental in developing community piano lessons in a group setting at Rock Valley College. Inger’s teaching style and classes are best described by one of her adult students: “She taught me (to play the piano) as a child. This is an easy, laid-back approach for the beginner. The student enjoys it!”

lyON, KaTHy has been teaching for Community Education since 1985. Kathy earned her Master of Fine Arts degree and is nearing completion of her Masters in Teaching. Since 1991 she has been a teacher within the Rockford Public Schools.

mENKEN, JOHN is a degreed English teacher (B.S. Indiana State University). He has taught high school English, has designed and taught English courses for home school students, has been a technical writer and editor, and is a published author.
