WELCOME TO THE THIRD EDITION OF RURAL ADS!!

Hello!

As well as supporting our local charities by offering free space in Rural Ads to promote their events or keep us up to date with information, this month’s edition of Rural Ads features some further topics, such as ‘Rural Past’. This is a new monthly column written by local Historian, Sarah Doig, which gives us an insight as to what life was like in the towns and villages before the majority of us were even thought of!

There is also an article on why it is important to still advertise in times of recession. And...have you heard of QR Codes? If not, turn to page 12 to find out more and how they could benefit your business.

Because we would like people to be clear about where you can pick up a copy of Rural Ads and also for advertisers to know where their advert is potentially going to get seen, we have listed on page 3 all of the places where you will find Rural Ads.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Rural Ads and would really appreciate any feedback or comments as to how this could be improved. Or if there is anything you would particularly like featured in Rural Ads, just send an email to [email protected].

GET YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES SEEN BY MORE PEOPLE ACROSS THE REGION, WITH OUTSTANDINGLY LOW ADVERTISING RATES.

Rural Ads would just like to say to all our distributors, a sincere and huge‘Thank You’! A great business community!

Rural PastEach month, local historian, Sarah Doig will be bringing us intriguing snippets of our local History

This Edition’s Feature is

Three Weddings, Two Funerals and a Suicide...Old newspapers give us a fascinating insight into the lives of those people who lived in our neighbourhood in the past. In the 19th century the Bury and Norwich Post was our main local newspaper and back issues survive for the whole of this period. Unlike today, local newspapers gave priority to national and international stories, relegating articles of more local interest (even the juicy ones!) to the inside pages. Although, of course, these reports lack the photographs we see today of victims of crime and gory scenes of accidents and murders, the articles themselves report in graphic detail some interesting and shocking stories.

On 2nd April 1828, the Bury and Norwich Post reported on the trial and conviction of Thomas Peacock. He was found guilty of having three wives at the same time; one in Lavenham, one in Postwick and a third in Elmswell (and it was even rumoured that he had a further two wives in Yorkshire). In passing sentence of transportation to Australia for seven years, the judge said that “unless I send you out of the country, it is to be feared you will literally make a conquest of all the ladies that come your way”.

The judge was clearly not at all impressed with Peacock’s crime adding that “not being content with one or even two wives, your attractions were so irresistible that the last lady (a poor decrepit old lady) was unable to withstand your solicitations, although it was evident she had arrived at that age when no common charms would have been successful”. I wonder whether Thomas mended his ways after seven years of hard labour in Australia? I suspect not...

Transportation to the colonies was also a common punishment for poaching in the 1800s. However for one unfortunate poacher, he didn’t survive long enough to stand trial. On 21st December 1880 the same local newspaper carried a report of the accidental death of William Rayner. He and an accomplice had been spotted acting suspiciously in Lover’s Lane, Garboldisham by the head gamekeeper to Lord Holmsdale.

The gamekeeper and his son challenged the two poachers and found that one of them - William Rayner - was threatening them with a gun. According to the reported testimonies at the inquest, the gamekeeper’s son got into a tussle with Rayner who tried to hit him with the butt of his gun. The firearm accidently fired at point blank range straight into William Rayner’s body. Although a doctor was called to the Fox Inn (where Rayner had been taken after being injured) there was little to be done to help him and he died a painful death a couple of hours later.

Finally, an article in the 4th June 1889 issue of the Bury and Norwich Post caught my eye, reporting on a coroner’s inquest into the sad deaths of Emma Blake and her illegitimate, two month-old daughter, Florence, in Walsham le Willows.

Emma’s grieving parents were the two main witnesses giving evidence at the inquest into the tragic double drowning in the pond opposite the Blake family’s house. Emma’s mother reported that since Florence’s birth Emma had not seemed the same as usual and that before the birth of her daughter Emma had, on several occasions, said that if George Baker (Florence’s supposed father) wouldn’t marry her, then she would “make away” with herself. Emma’s father who had had the distressing job of helping a neighbour retrieve Emma’s and Florence’s bodies from the pond, said that Emma had seemed “low-spirited” after the birth.

The coroner eventually returned the verdict that “Florence Blake was wilfully murdered by her mother, who committed suicide whilst in a state of temporary insanity”. For Florence a very sad end to an extremely short life.

This article is the first in a series written by Sarah Doig, a family & local historian who lives on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. Details of all the services Sarah offers are on her website www.ancestral-heritage.co.uk.

Sarah would also welcome feedback on her articles as well as suggestions for future ones.

BUILDING & TRADE CONT’D

Dear Chef

I try to include some oily fish in my diet each week, I enjoy mackereI but I am getting a little tired of just eating the ready cooked/smoked variety.

I would really love to try and cook some fresh mackerel myself but I am unsure as to how I can do this.

Do you have a simple recipe that I can try please?

Many Thanks - Julie Evans

Dear Julie

As you know Mackerel is extremely good for you (it contains essential Omega 3 oils), but also good for the environment as it is in plentiful supply.

One simple idea is to get your local fishmonger to clean the whole fish for you and cut notches into the flesh of both sides of the fish.

When you get home simply, finely chop some garlic, chilli and mix it with some curry powder adding a little oil to form a paste. Rub this paste into the notches, leave for several hours in the fridge to allow the fish to take in the flavours.

Simply brush with a little oil and place in a hot oven for about 10 minutes. Serve with rice and perhaps a little salad.

Enjoy, Simon

I am looking for somebody to share Edna and hack her out regularly. This can be on a flexible basis to fit in around you. In return, a contibution towards her keep would be required. She is based at a yard in Hinderclay (approx. 6 miles south of Diss). She is a big mare with lots of character and can occassionally be a bit ‘spooky’ when out hacking, but has a very

kind temperament and enjoys a lot of fuss. She will therefore need a confident, experienced rider.

If you are interested, please contact Meia on 07988 798 739 or email me at [email protected].

HEALTH

THE GASTRIC WEIGHT-LOSS HYPNO-BANDHAS NOW ARRIVED IN EAST ANGLIA

Special Offer of £375 for the complete

programme!!!For a limited period only

Hypno-BandWeight Loss System

Licensed Practitioner

Ruth is a licensed Hypno-band practitioner and using the latest techniques, she will take you through this fantastic Hypnoband weightloss programme, whereby a state of mind is created into believing that you have actually had the gastric band fitted!!!

Take a look at the following story from a real person like you, who has changed her life!!!

This was an article taken from the Daily Mail...

“I lost 4 stone after a Hypnotist convinced me to have a gastric band”

As gastric bands go, it was surprisingly straight forward and pleasant. There was NO pain, NO risk of infection, NO anaesthetic and NO recovery period afterwards and all at a fraction of the £7,000 such surgery would have cost. That’s because the patient, Company

Director, Emma Eveleigh-Anderton, 36, never actually had a gastric band fitted.

Dramatic weight loss, Emma Eveleigh-Anderton, 36, has dropped five dress sizes in just six months after being hypnotised into believing that she had a gastric band fitted.

The mother-of-two paid £980 for four sessions over a one month period, starting with a 45 minute ‘virtual’ surgery where Russell Hemmings talked her through every step of the medical procedure as though she were actually in the operating theatre.

She said, “It was as if I was having the operation, except I was in an office rather than a theatre. After the first session I felt hopeful, but after the second, I really felt more positive and much more controlled about my eating. I had actually re-educated my mind.

I was starting to feel fuller quicker and eating much less”.

Mrs Eveleigh-Anderton, from Coventry, runs her own exhibition and conference organisation with husband Darren, 42. She turned to the gastric band therapy after diets, appetite supression pills and sheer willpower failed to help her lose weight alone.

Please mention RURAL ADS when replying to advertisements

Donald Trump, the famous American business magnate once remarked, ”You can have the most wonderful product in the world, but if people don’t know about it, it’s not going to be worth much.” Similarly, Phil Dusenberry, the advertising guru behind the success of the marketing campaign for soft drinks giant Pepsi, amusingly commented, “ I have always believed that writing advertisements is the second most profitable form of writing. The first, of course, is ransom notes.” On a serious note though, it is reasonable to presume that these people know what they are talking about. So the answer to the question has to be a resounding ‘YES’!

When you have goods or services to sell then it is evident that you must let your potential customers know. A spectacular shop window presentation or the bold logo on the side of your commercial vehicles will generate new business to a limited extent only. However, your product needs to be projected to buyers through publicity which extends beyond these relatively rudimentary display methods. Let’s

be clear though, publicity won’t enable you to sell a bad product so quality is obviously paramount.

It is a common failing of many new enterprises that view advertising as a necessary evil rather than a means of securing future success. Therefore, in harsh trading conditions such as those we are experiencing at the moment, a clear and effective marketing strategy may be the difference between success and failure.

Even small and economical methods of getting your message out to a broader audience is money well spent. It is well known that during an economic recession customer loyalty will be one of the first things to decline, so strong marketing will help counter that. It follows that you should keep your voice loud when your competitors have decided to stay silent! Presently the cost of advertising through traditional media is at an all-time low so it makes even greater sense to get your product out into the market place now. When you have the opportunity to present your product in a novel or colourful way, take it. Nowadays, even basic adverts can be eye-catching and punchy. There is no reason to limit your design to simple words in tedious black and white. Just be sure to include sufficient material to attract attention and retain interest.

Here at Rural Ads the rates are always outstandingly competitive. It costs no more to have your advert printed in full colour and whilst there are offers on bulk advertising, you are not obliged to commit to more than one month’s advertising at a time, if that’s what you choose. With the added bonuses of having your advertisement displayed in the style that you want and with your ad being available on our website, with a direct link to yours, you cannot lose! Check out our rates on page 3.

So...the message is - GET ADVERTISING with RURAL ADS!

Contact Meia on 07988 798

QR Codes are two dimensional bar codes that can be scanned using your smart phone and can contain any alphanumeric text. This is then converted and often transferred into either a link to a specific website, to provide tracking information or for routing data.

QR Codes are increasingly being seen on various forms of documentation, in advertising campaigns, appearing on business cards and drink/food labels.

QR Code scanners are available through smart phones and the QR generator is free to download, making it simple to then be able to create your own QR codes. You are then given the opportunity to create Web URLs, phone numbers, text, location codes, email or SMS codes. The potential is endless!

RURAL ADS are offering to create you a QR CODE to appear on your advert, which when scanned, will lead the reader directly to your WEBSITE. Email [email protected] if you would like more information, or this to appear within your advert.
