Editor’s Message Dear fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors,

friends and all people of good will, with the covie-19 pandemic.

Everything has changed from the usual; this means we need to change and be adoptive to changing patterns if we are to survive in this changing world.

From the time we had the outbreak out of the pandemic in

China in November 2019, nobody knew that it was going to affect the

entire World and in Uganda, since March 18th 2020; a lot of things have happened and changed subsequently; we have seen more presence of business and individual’s online as opposed to how I was in 2019, Rotary family inclusive. The Use of GoToMeeting, Zoom, Skype, and WebEx have replaced and taken over the space as Fellowship meeting options as opposed to physical meeting.

As District 9211, we had a fi rst ever successful virtual DCA that was welcomed with uniqueness and attended by thousands of Rotarians and none Rotarians; a big thank you to PDG Owek. Salongo Sentamu and your team who made it a success.

As a club we want to thank our IPP Rtn Prof Jude Lubega PHF+1 for having been a good driver and far sighted in this period when IT has taken over the space. Thank you for leading us and putting us at the fore front. In the same spirit, we are grateful to all the Rotarian’s and people of good who have made it possible by providing the necessary fi nances, skills, services and time despite the lock down and associated challenges.

Our incoming Opportunities president Rtn Suzane Samula, we have accepted that you are our pilot in the rotary year 2020/20201 as we open opportunities. Let also the words of our RI president Holger Knaack “Rotary has to change and will change. And even if some fellow Rotarians will complain that it does not look like their old Rotary, we have to change.” Be our Bible for the TIME is now to revolutionize Rotary through Transformational IdeasTo the organizing committee I am indebted to all of you for all the effort and time put in to pull off this historic event in style.

Friends we hope u are prepared to fl y with us; we wish you all the best as we take advantage of all the opportunities in the Rotary year 2020/2021.

Rotary International President sees opportunities this year

Rotary isn’t just a club for people to join, but rather “an invitation to endless opportunities,” said

Knaack, who became president on 1 July. He emphasized that Rotary creates pathways for members to improve their lives and the lives of those they help through service projects.

“We believe that our acts of service, big and small, create opportunities for people who need our help,” Knaack said. He added that Rotary creates leadership opportunities and gives members the chance to travel the world to

put their service ideas into action and make lifelong connections. “Everything we do opens another opportunity for someone, somewhere,” said Knaack.Changing for the futureKnaack also urged members to embrace change so Rotary can expand and thrive. Rather than setting a specifi c target for increasing the number of members, Knaack said he’s asking clubs and districts to think about how to grow in a sustainable and organic way. He wants clubs to focus on keeping current members engaged and adding new members who are the right fi t for their club. We will capture this moment to grow Rotary, making it stronger, more adaptable, and even more aligned with our core values.

“We need to stop thinking of new members as people we can mark down as statistics and then forget about,” Knaack said. “Every new member changes us a little bit. That person brings a new perspective, new experiences. We need to embrace this constant renewal. We will grow stronger as we learn from new members.”Knaack pointed to Rotary’s Action Plan as a compass that can guide clubs as they evolve. He recommended that every club

have a strategic plan meeting at least once a year. At that meeting, clubs should ask where they want to be in fi ve years and how they can bring more value to their members.

Knaack also wants to see more women in leadership roles and see Rotaractors play an integral role in how new clubs are formed and run. He encouraged district leaders to create new club models and rethink what it means to be in Rotary, and allow young people to be the architects of these new clubs.

“We have to be open to new approaches, and creating unique clubs for younger people is just part of the solution,” said Knaack. “Let Rotaractors decide what kind of Rotary experience works best for them. These young people are bright, energetic, and they get things done.”

In stressing the need for Rotary members to embrace change, Knaack noted that time won’t slow down for Rotary: “We will not let rapid change defeat us. We will capture this moment to grow Rotary, making it stronger, more adaptable, and even more aligned with our core values.”

Dear Opportunity President: Congratulations to you and your Board of Directors upon being entrusted to lead your

Club. I trust you are off to a great start! The Rotary Year 2020-2021 will be special in so many ways, not because we are becoming leaders but rather, we are being asked to open opportunities and make a difference! Rotary International President Holger Knaack (2020-2021) shared our Rotary Theme: Rotary Opens Opportunities. Now is our chance to demonstrate that we are men and women of action – ready, willing, and able to make a difference in the communities we serve. As a club leader you have a vital role to play in the continued success of Rotary.

Rotary International New Strategic

Plan is our compass for action this year. The fi rst pillar on increasing our impact compels us to contribute generously to the Rotary Foundation so that collectively with other clubs in our district we meet the $600,000 mark of giving. Every member should give to TRF, however small the contribution may be. But the story of giving is incomplete if we do not implement projects in our communities. During and after COVID 19 pandemic, many communities will require our support to rebuild livelihoods. Inspire and guide members to implement impactful sustainable projects in your respective communities. Let

us engage our long-life partners in Rotary projects and encourage them

to consider joining Rotary through Corporate Membership. The overall target for global grant utilization for D9211 is US$ 4 million.

The second pillar is about expanding our reach, allowing Rotary to grow organically, and encouraging inclusiveness of youth and women. We target 600 persons to join rotary, 100

Rotaractors to transition into Rotary, 10 Rotaract clubs to be formed and fl exible club models introduced. Brand standardization is core to our existence as an institution.

The third pillar is about enhancing participant engagement. Plan for Fitness and Nutrition (FAN) fellowships and activities to bring fun into Rotary and Rotaract Clubs, publicise Rotary and its benefi ts and promote preventive measures for Non-Communicable diseases (NCDs) in our society. Let us involve Rotaractors in joint projects, promote diversity in club meeting times and formats and hold at least one Strategic meeting to allow members express their desire of how they want their club to be now and fi ve years on.

The fourth pillar is about increasing

our ability to adapt by reporting club goals and performance on Rotary Club Central; qualifying the club; ensuring zero tolerance to fraud and participating in delivering 2 strong districts 9213 and 9214 by the end of our tenure in service on June 30, 2021. The clubs will have the able support and guidance of Assistant Governors throughout the year.

After successfully implementing all the above suggested programmes, I invite you all to celebrate with me our achievements at the end of the year at the 96th District Conference and Assembly that will at place at Speke Resort Hotel, Munyonyo.

Congratulations to the Connecting President and the entire club leadership for the outstanding performance of the club during Rotary year 2019/20. The milestones so achieved under the leadership of District Governor Francis Xavier Ssentamu provide a strong platform for club continuity in 2020-21.

I wish you the best during your year of service and assure you of my unending support during the year. Your allocated Assistant Governor and the District Offi cers are a resource that you should call upon whenever you need technical assistance in planning and executing the year’s programme. Enjoy your year of service as this opportunity comes once in your lifetime; groom the next leaders to ensure continuity and sustainability of the club at the end of your year of service.

I look forward to hearing from each of you over the next 12 months as we “Open Opportunities” in District 9211. I encourage you to keep safe and observe the Government regulations on COVID-19.

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Every end is a new beginning and it is with pleasure that I welcome and congratulate

Opportunity President Susan Samula and her board as they take on the mantle of leadership of this Rotary Club for the Rotary year 2020 -2021. But it is also an opportune moment to refl ect upon, and to congratulate outgoing Connecting President Prof. Jude Lubega and his exceptional team, of whom I am immensely proud, for successfully navigating an unprecedented year.

I am sure that you have all come across this famous quote by Charles Darwin: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” The COVID-19 pandemic has been a game changer at so many levels. But as District Governor, I have neverfelt more proud to be a Rotarian as I have been since the COVID-19 outbreak. Having began the Rotaryyear with great ambition to demonstrate how “Rotary connects the World,” I was afraid that our plans were doomed. But Rotarians in D9211 and around the world proved me wrong. The speed with which clubs adopted online meetings has been mind-boggling! And you will agree with me that never before, have Rotarians been more “connected” across clubs, districts and zones, as has been the case over the last three months. COVID-19 has enabled us to experience what it means to be a global family; and RC Namasuba has been at the forefront supporting other clubs with this technological adaptation.

At a time of great uncertainty and anxiety, the resilience, agility, leadership and humanity of

Rotarians, has shone through and led us to new heights. I will never forget the spontaneous generosity and thespeed with which individual Rotarians and Rotary Clubs leveraged their connections and resources to support our District 9211 Covid-19 Response. These actions have not only upheld Rotary’s heritage of looking out for the needs of others, but have also compellingly projected Rotarians as “People of Action” and effective problem solvers.

Paul Harris once said: “this is a changing world and we must be prepared to change with it.” Our experiences during the last three months have taught us that nothing is impossible and that there is an opportunity in every

crisis – if we are willing to show up; to be open minded; and ready to try new ideas.

As the Connecting Team prepares to hand over the baton, I am both thankful and confi dent that we are handing over a stronger and even more resilient Rotary family.

I pledge my full support to the Opportunity Team led by District Governor Rosetti and I hope that we will together build on the ‘connections’ we have made this year, to create new opportunities for Rotary service. Wishing you great success through the coming year.

Our Chief Guest, District Governor Francis Xavier Sentamu, fellow Rotarians, Rotractors, PDGs,

AGs, PAGs, DGSR and Guests, am deeply honoured to have served as the 2nd President of the Rotary Club of Namasuba. This year has been one of my best in life and I would like to thank my club members for having trusted me with such a noble job and for all the support accorded to me during the year. My connections to Rotary and fellow Rotarians has been very inspiring and a journey to reckon with. It is just 2 days to a year when I stood in front of my fellow Rotarians and pledged to serve as President for the year 2019/2020. Am here to let you know that I have proudly served and I have come to the end of my tenure as President. When I look back within the year I can only smile and say it was a pleasure to serve you as club members and to serve Rotary at large.

I would like to appreciate the generosity, commitment and dependability for the men and women of RC Namasuba and other Rotarians plus Rotractors who have made this year a great one indeed. Working with you made my leadership so easy and one to enjoy at all times. Achievements made during the year are ours and failures within the club are mine as your leader because I should have done better. It was a great pleasure to serve you as the 2nd president of Rotary Club of Namasuba and thank you all club members most especially my board for standing with me to make sure we take the club to the next level. The Assistant Governor Michael Murithi thank you so much for always advising us ably, my advisor now AG Harriet Bampera Obbo for supporting the club and providing that regular advice to the club. DG Francis Xavier Sentamu, we are really proud of you for inspiring us and for a wonderful job undertaken during your tenure as governor, thank you for inspiring us to connect.

Club Achievements in the Connecting Year

During the year 2019/2020, RC Namasuba has achieved a lot and below are some of them;

Club Quali cation: During this connecting year, we managed have all the checks and balances needed to get a club qualifi ed. We achieved this and now RC Namasuba is qualifi ed to win international grants. This is no minimal achievement for a 2-year-old club but with the hard work of members we achieved it. I take the opportunity to thank so much the treasurer (Mr. Joseph Mukasa) for making sure we adhere to the proper checks and balances and for members who paid all their dues on time.

Fellowships: RC Namasuba has held 100% all its fellowships within the connecting year without fail and this is very good for the club. Some of these fellowships have been joint fellowships with other clubs and some others have been virtual due to the lock down. The introduction of the buddy groups (Lufuka, Pidda and Paara) to be in charge

of the fellowships greatly improved them. Some innovations in the fellowships were made of which some of them were for guest speakers, Rotarian’s parliament, Q&A fellowships, Classifi cation defence among others. The members club attendance has been between 60 - 70% through the year. We say high numbers of visiting Rotarians come to visit the club and this is attributed to the very good club ambassadors (Hajjat Rehema Ndagire and Susan Ssamula) that visit a club on almost a daily basis. Thank you for carrying the club fl ag so high and we appreciate the resilience.

Board Meetings and Assemblies: During the connecting year, the club has held board meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. This kept board steer club activities and made sure that they attain the stated objectives. During the board meetings, sometimes they were attended by the AG and DGSR. The resolutions made within the board were then taken to the club assembly for endorsement. We held at least 3 assemblies within the year in which other club members were allowed to discuss the resolutions.

Club Dues: The club is very proud to be in good standing and has paid up all RI

From the outgoing President 2019/20dues plus District and country dues to full. Club members are very cooperative on payment of dues and are obliged to make good through the regular reminders made by both the treasurer and president.

Participation in RI and Country Activities: The club members have participated very actively in several activities including the fundraising, publicity and trainings. For example, the club members ably participated in the cancer run and other club level fundraising activities. RC Namasuba is remembered to have actively publicised the polio message through the placards that were made.

Mothering a Club: The club has fi nally been able to mother a Rotract Club of Namasuba which was chartered on the 16 June 2020. This club is one of the clubs was targeted to get charted this year.

Club Status Report against set goals

Membership growth: During this connecting year, we managed to recruit 7 members to the club and we have some new members still under mentorship that will be inducted in the opportunity year if they meet the minimum requirements of the club. Out of these 7 members 4 were males and 3 were females. I take the opportunity to thank the membership director, CP and the sponsors for ably doing their work.

Membership Extension: During the connecting year, we have nurtured Rotract Club of Namasuba to the level of being chartered. The Rotract Club of Namasuba was chartered on the 10 June 2020 with its Charles President being Angelo Wavamuno. This is the fi rst club we have mothered and we have another 1 or 2 in the pipeline have been identifi ed and will be mentored in the opportunity year. I take the opportunity to thank the youth director (Rtn Shifra Nakalema), and projects director (Rtn. Rose Mutanda) who worked so hard to make sure that we mother this Rotract club of Namasuba. I congratulate all the members for that club and we look forward for the club to emulate the mother club in all what they do.

Public Relations: It was important for the club to remain visible at all times through diff erent avenues. The club maintained and updated its website almost every month, created a Facebook account and

encouraged its members to visit other clubs. Each member was allocated to be an ambassador to a club and this allowed several of them to visit a club at least every week. All the club material were branded rightly and the club maintained its uniform too.

Rotary Foundation: The club encourage its members to give to the foundation and this led the club to attain another 5 PHFs and 1 PHF+1. The goal of having $4,000 donated to the foundation fell short by just $500 only. The club members have also been able to fundraise for polio worth $470 out of the anticipated $1300.

Club Projects: The club has participated in implementing and planning for projects within this connecting year. The club implemented a health project in Kyebe – Kyotera district and had planned to have another one in April 2020 but was overtaken by the lockdown events. The cub has undertaken needs assessments for water projects and skilling of youth in a needy place in Bugiri. The club has further gone ahead to write a Global grant in collaboration with a Swiss partner (RC Allschwil-Region Basel in Switzerland) worth approximately $48,750. This will be a good kick start for the opportunity year once the grant is accepted.

Members serving beyond the Club: The club has several members who are serving beyond the club at the country and district level. For example, several members have been part of the Cancer run fundraising activity (Rtn. Susan Ssamula, Rtn. Hajjat Rehema Ndagire among others).

Ryla and other Rotract Activity Participation: The club had set to sponsor 3 Rotractors to attend Ryla in 2020 but managed to sponsor 4 Rotractors to attend Ryla in Entebbe.

The club also managed to sponsor 3 Rotractors to attend another Rotract event in Mbarara where they raised the club fl ag high.

Acknowledgments

I would like to thank the following;

The District Governor Francis Xavier Sentamu for ably leading the district and always inspiring the clubs on the set goals.

RC Namasuba board and all the members who committed so much of their time and eff ort to make sure the club shines far and near during the Rotary year 20202.

Club Advisor AGE Harriet Bampera Obbo for the continuous advice and love for the club she showed during the connecting year.

The Charter President George Musiitwa for the very good guidance and support during the year 2020. Your un ending commitment to the club has seen it grow to another level, well done.

Last but not least, to my family for allowing me to take part of your time and off er it to the club. Your endurance to my time schedule, coming back late and always in meetings and fellowships cannot be under estimated. Thank you so much

To the Opportunity President Rtn. Susan Ssamula and the entire incoming board, I wish you well in the year ahead. It may look a very challenging year to take on but remember it is there to open all the opportunities out there. The year will be fun and you have the entire club support to make sure that the set goals are achieved.

I thank RC Namasuba once again for the giving me the opportunity to serve as your 2nd President. I also apologize to all of you in case at any one moment I off ended you or failed to lead you to success. Am really very sorry

Acceptance Speech by President Susan

It is my honour to welcome you all to our installation ceremony. We are indeed

privileged to have all of you with us, both physically and online. Special recognition to our immediate Past District Governor Ssalongo Xavier Sentamu who accepted to be our Guest of honour. To the Immediate past District First Lady Nalongo Brenda Sentamu, you are truly an angel for more than one reason.

My Rotary journey

My Rotary journey began in July 2017 when I walked into Freedom City on the invitation of Dr. Gertrude Namubiru Sentongo. The Rotary Club of Namasuba (RCN) then in formation, had

started meeting in January 2017. I walked in with a lot of enthusiasm to know why Dr. Gertrude had invited me only to fi nd a Rotary meeting taking place. I got excited and decided then that I was going to join hands with this wonderful team to make our communities better among other things.RCN was started on a fi rm foundation, thanks to the Rotary Club of Muyenga our mother club. We were able to take off and were fi nally chartered as a club and I am proud to be a charter member.

I appreciate the opportunity given to me to execute various club responsibilities up to President of my club. Over time, I have tried to learn a

lot about Rotary and listen to my very many Rotary mentors who have kept on teaching and encouraging me. I really love my Rotary family because everyone is a friend and as a result I have several mentors and role models who have made me what I am. A big thank you to all of you.

As a student of the Rotary Leadership Institute, I was introduced to yet another part of my Rotary family that I am very proud of. While there, I not only got to know more about Rotary but also started a wonderful network of friends who have made a diff erence in my life in more than one way.

As a visitor to the over 50 Rotary clubs, including ‘upcountry’ Clubs like RC Arua, RC Kabarole, RC Mbale, RC Masindi, RC Mityana, I have learnt a lot about how things are done and also made a number of friends. The warm welcome extended when I visit makes me keep going back.

I am very grateful to Rtn. Henry Rugamba and the Cancer run team who introduced me to the Cancer Run and gave me the fi rst opportunity to serve beyond the club. Our club was still in formation but he allowed me to join team of experienced Rotarians. While there, I have learnt a lot about public relations, fundraising, stakeholder engagement and

Page 10: Rotary Club of Namasuba

Acceptance Speechmobilization and commitment to a great cause. I have also established a sustainable network of Rotarians that include PDG Stephen Mwanje the brain behind the highly successful Cancer run that is now global. Great strides have been made including putting up the Cancer ward at Nsambya hospital. This gives me another strong reason to stay and serve as part of the wider Rotary fraternity.

Elsewhere

I also serve in other capacities to benefi t the community. As Head of Laity of St. Stephen’s Church of Uganda Kabowa, I ensure that the priests and Christians harmoniously work together to grow in the faith and focus on the Christion mission and values. I also ensure that the operations of my church are well and running.

As Treasurer of Mothers’ Union of the Diocese of Namirembe, I am charged with ensuring that funds are well utilized and fully accounted for.

As Chair Fundraising and Construction Committee of Mothers’ Union Namirembe Diocese, I am charged with mobilizing fi nancial resources for all the Construction projects including the ongoing Mothers’ Union house, a nine fl oor building on Namirembe hill.

Other responsibilities include being a member of school management committees,

investment organisations and also involvement in the health sector.

I have to be very organized as I balance my responsibilities within the limited time

The RCN year 2020/2021

This Rotary year, themed “Rotary Opens Opportunities” asks Rotarians to create opportunities that strengthen their leadership, help put service ideas into action and improve the lives of those in need. RCN will greatly be inspired by this theme in all that we are going to do.

As a three year old club, we are very ambitious and pray that we achieve as planned. Our focus is to concentrate on club projects because we believe we are now ready to start impacting our communities. We have planned to work on a number of projects in the areas of Maternal and Child Health, Water and Sanitation, Basic education and literacy and Disease prevention and treatment. Work has already started and we thank all who are modeling us in that direction. We intend to submit a global grant as a means of benefi tting from the Rotary Foundation to which 7 members have so far contributed.

Amidst the COVID pandemic which is posing a challenge of us reaching out, we want to embrace our family of Rotary by getting to know our members better and also involving our families in the

activities that we do. We shall execute activities that support the FAN compaign because we believe that a healthy family is the best for the Rotary.

The youth are an important part of our club and we are proud to be mothers to the newly born Rotaract Club of Namasuba which is comprised of energetic youths who are ready to work. We are going to join hands with the Rotary Club of Nateete to form and mentor youths into the Rotaract Club of Kabowa, where a number of youths want to join hands in the service of humanity. We also have an interact club which is already in the making and we will resume mentorship once the schools re-open.

Other very important plans include contributing to the Rotary Foundation, enhance our club visibility while focusing on the needs of our community of Namasuba where we are based. We have a task of coming up with a strategic plan for our club, a task that we are ready to undertake. During the year, we are purposefully looking out to recruit more members into our club so that we diversify the classifi cations as a means of exploiting various avenues of service and be able to deliver widely in our communities.

Rotary International has existed for a long time with its norms keeping the same across the

world but most importantly founded on very fi rm foundation. There is a lot that takes place year by year as Rotarians, Rotractors and Interactors work tirelessly to provide service above self to humanity across the world. This makes Rotary International the number one charitable organisation across the world for several years running consecutively. This is always something that Rotarians, Rotractors and Interactors are very proud about.

For a long time in Rotary, di erent services have been o ered in di erent ways which have always been dictated by the circumstances and availability of resources and other things within the environment. It is clear that somethings in Rotary had failed to change and be appreciate by some members irrespective that we were already leaving within the 4th Industrial revolution (4IR). The 4IR brought into use of more agile Information Communication Technologies to majorly improve e ciency and e ectiveness in service provision. Failure to embrace fully the 4IR within RI meant that opportunities were being missed out which could have improved the organisation to a certain extent.

Many times, wherever there is an action there is a reaction in the opposite direction in order to obey Newton’s laws of motion. Since there has been an abrupt change of action such as the CONVID-19 pandemic, it was expected that a reaction within the di erent direction would be noted and adopted. It is not surprising that a reaction in service provision in RI has seen realised which calls for immediate design of the new Rotary that fully integrates the 4IR within its services. RI can benefi t greatly from the adoption of the 4IR in many ways and these could change it to fully suit this era. As we are aware that RI is made of di erent clubs across the world which practice the Rotary norms and so many other club activities related to the themes developed to support provision of service above self.

The CONVID-19 pandemic caused a serious action of lock down across the world and many of the service sectors were serious a ected hence causing the provision of service almost impossible. By doing so, we have seen RI, governments, businesses, educational institutions, hospitals, hotels, churches, mosques to mention a few locked out in o ering services despite living within the 4IR. Majority of these services are ones that can ably tap into the opportunities brought in by 4IR but had not utilised the opportunity. It was eminent from organisations

that something quick needed to be done to bring back service provision to reality. In so doing there came a paradigm shift in service provision geared to more adoption of 4IR in so many activities as one way to remain afl oat. This has also led me to think about the design of the new Rotary that taps into the opportunities already brought by 4IR. The fl exibility and ability to do things di erently using 4IR is making us to rethink how some of the activities were being undertaken in Rotary and how they could be improved further to suit the new normal. Some of the highlights are further described below;

As a Rotarian, one is required to attend fellowship in order to regularly meet up with other members to discuss how they can better serve humanity and also share memories about their lives. In the past, majorly the fellowship have been physical and required an individual to converge in a specifi c place in order to attend. This norm was not only an inconvenience to some members but also deterred others new members from joining. Fellowships have always been held with fewer members due to several reasons as given by club members, visiting Rotarians and guests. Time has been one of the biggest factor deterring people to attend fellowship but as the saying goes, what you consider important you always fi nd time for it. This did

Designing the New Rotary for this Eranot stop so many members from skipping fellowships because they were locked up at work, stuck in meetings and tra c jam and due to so many other reasons despite that they really valued their membership to RI. The paradigm shift has signifi cantly shown RI that fellowships can be held virtually with support from 4IR technologies and that it can be very appealing to so many people. Today, almost all Rotary clubs are having their fellowships, meetings and conferences virtually. An example is the just concluded 95th District Conference Assembly for district 9211 which received many attendees than ever before. It was such a magnifi cent conference attended ubiquitously by many people across the world and completely changed the meaning of having physical conferences. Am sure there are so many Rotarians asking themselves what did we miss in the physical DCA but not forgetting that each situation calls for a di erent action. It is therefore important for RI to rethink about how some of its major activities can be undertaken and most especially with support from the 4IR technologies.

Collaboration amongst Rotary Clubs and their members across the world is something that has been lacking greatly. It was very rare to fi nd Rotarians from a di erent district attending fellowship for another club in a

di erent or same district. This was attributed to issues such as time, distance to travel to attend, communication about the fellowship among others. With use of the 4IR technologies all these issues are no more and there are several Rotarians attending club fellowships across Rotary clubs and districts. This new normal of being able to attend fellowship beyond your district ubiquitously is already leading to great collaborations and engagement across districts. Some Rotary clubs are already engaging on how they can undertake service projects together and this is something RI has to be proud about.

For so many years, RI membership has been stagnant and needs a very innovative way to raise the numbers. Despite that RI has done so many good things within the communities across the world, membership still remained low as compared to how long the organisation has been in existence. It should be noted that many people out there recognise the good done by Rotary and some of them participate in the service projects but without being Rotarians. Several interactions held with some colleagues pointed onto how we undertake some of our activities such as fellowship. Some people preferred not to attend if they became members because physical presence would be a challenge to them. Within this new era were fellowship

and other club activities can be carried out virtually, is it the right time to propose more e-clubs. If each club nurtured an e-club with only members who preferred working virtually but with 3-4 physical annual meetings, this would boost hugely our membership. For example, have Rotary E-Club of Namasuba with 40 virtual members would hugely boost the RC Namasuba. These two clubs can work on service projects together and many other things but under di erent leadership. Is this something that can be implemented to grow Rotary membership?

Am sure there are so many other things that we can do with support of the 4IR technologies in order to make Rotary much better than in the past. Can we initiate a discussion around this new normal within the clubs as we design the new Rotary?

Fitness and nutriti on (FAN) is the behavior change campaign for Rotary District 9211 during

2020-21. The vision of the FAN campaign is to contribute to a healthy and producti ve populati on free from non-communicable diseases.

The mission of FAN campaign is to promote and inspire adopti on of healthy lifestyle choices that enhance disease preventi on and treatment coupled with publicizing Rotary by making its acti viti es fun hence att racti ng and engaging youthful members, the community and other stakeholders at large. The FAN campaign goals are thus twofold namely to i) Reduce morbidity and mortality due to non-communicable diseases ii) Grow and improve Rotary membership in diversity plus parti cipati on.

The FAN campaign is premised on evidence indicati ng that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular diseases, certain forms of cancer, depression and chronic respiratory diseases represent 71% of the global burden of disease aff ecti ng the quality of life of populati ons.

Overall, NCDs cause an esti mated 41 million deaths every year, especially among the youthful and adult populati ons from both the affl uent and low socio-economic status. NCDs killed 1,064,000 people in Uganda in 2010, with 61% of the dead being below age 70 years (UNCDA, 2016). The situati on is not any diff erent in Tanzania where WHO 2016, revealed that NCDs accounted for 33% of all the deaths.

The leading behavioural risk factors associated with NCDs are insuffi cient physical exercise, stress and unhealthy diets, smoking and excessive alcohol intake, and subsequent biological risk factors such as raised blood pressure, raised blood glucose, obesity and raised cholesterol. These associated risk factors of non-communicable diseases are largely preventable through provision of a supporti ve environment that aids adopti on of appropriate healthy practi ces across varied age and social-economic groups. Opti mal health and wellness strategies should thus be geared towards enabling individual achieve their personal interests and sati sfacti on as well as contributi ng to one’s environment by supporti ng the community and society at large.

During 2020-21, Rotary District 9211 will thus implement a FAN campaign which will be rolled out through Rotary, Rotaract and Interact Clubs with acti viti es being conducted regularly at individual, club and community level. Overall, the FAN campaign will comprise of well balanced and engaging fun acti viti es such as physical exercise and mental relaxati on sessions,

nutriti on and health informati on, as well as clinical assessments geared to raise public awareness about the identi fi cati on, preventi on and management of key risk factors that lead to increasing mortality due to non-communicable diseases within its populati ons.

The acti viti es will be integrated into regular club fellowships, Rotary semi-annual and annual acti viti es e.g. Cancer Run; relevant Rotary health related theme months e.g. Disease Preventi on, Basic Literacy and Educati on, Maternal and Child Health, Water and Sanitati on etc as well as community acti viti es. Acti viti es conducted and lessons learnt will be shared through Club and District newslett ers, website and/or social media channels.

By implementi ng the FAN campaign, higher public awareness about rotary will be built hence culminati ng in growth in Rotary membership and retenti on especially the youth as well as enhancement of rotary service areas. In additi on, partnerships’ will be built between Rotary, other sectors and stakeholders. FAN will thus be insti tuti onalised in Rotary, public and private insti tuti ons, communiti es hence leading to wellness being adopted as way of life resulti ng in a healthier populati on. Ulti mately, the FAN campaign will help contribute toward the Rotary vision of “Together we see a world where people unite and take acti on to create long lasti ng change - across the globe, in our communiti es and in ourselves”.

What is Afri-centric curriculum?

It is organized around an integrated academic and social skills model, geared towards the development of knowledge

based curriculum alongside the desired behavior, customs and beliefs of African society. The curriculum is designed to not only support the development and mastery of academic skills (reading, writi ng, math computati on, and criti cal thinking) but also to provide students with a solid foundati on of values and experienti al learning. Afric-centric curriculum uti lizes the concept of learning by doingThe initi al values in the Africentric curriculum view are inclusiveness, cooperati on-collecti ve responsibility, interdependence, and complementarity-understanding. This view is opposed to the Eurocentric values and customs which are mainly infl uenced by such concepts as competi ti on-individual rights, independence, materialism, and linearity/ordinarily. It is believed that the Eurocentric understanding is responsible for the “I DON’T CARE ATTITUDE SEEN IN AFRICAN NATIONALS TODAY” what do you think. The euro centric curriculum limits learners to schools with limited links to the society where they come from. This has aff ected most of the African children who were known as criti cal thinkers. There thinking is not supported by the environment in which they belong.

The perceived situati on at hand in Uganda Some parents are seeing Ugandan

cultures as obstacles to schooling. Most learners are cut off from their cultural roots, many parents and learners have abandoned in their minds their own cultures with a hope that this will culturally bring them closer to the white norms. Society expectati ons and curriculum demands seem to be divorced. Society seem to see curriculum as contributi ng to the dilemma experienced. African students are taught to perceive the world through another culture and unconsciously learn to see themselves as insignifi cant part of the world. Komakech (2016) asserts that the new primary school curriculum is designed to overload students and stuff them with Eurocentric or outdated colonial materials. Do you believe him?

The relevance

The Africentric curriculum

• Locates students within the context of their own cultural and social frames of reference so that they become more connected to and grounded in the learning process. In that way learning takes place naturally. Incorporati ng elements of a student’s culture into the curriculum allows students have a connecti on to what they are learning

• Students are acti vely engaged in a learning process using their multi ple talents. In this way they promote mutual respect, social responsibility, community belonging and academic excellence.

• Parent get involved in promoti ng learning. Parents’ involvement is criti cal also to students’ success.

• It helps learners to understand themselves and their values before understanding others in order to appreciate and value others

• It empowers learners to gain self-respect, self-discipline, physical, academic, mental, and

emoti onal success.

• It allows learners to create their own knowledge and be able to solve all challenges they encounter using the criti cal and creati ve thinking.

• It allows learners to focus on values of Responsibility, Decision-Making, Problem Solving and Confl ict Resoluti on.

• Allows learners to fi t their personal experiences into patt erns of universal human behavior.

• Relates their learning to what they already know thereby, help them fi t new learning into their conscious frame of reference.

• Allows for teachers and students to be creati ve in both learning and teaching.

• Recognizes the connecti ons between and among all things and all people.

• Provide learners with frameworks for understanding future problems that may confront them both in and outside the classroom.

We need to regain the pride of the African cultures and identi ty, we need to be proud as Africans, we need to unite and collaborate as Africans for the AFRICAN WE WANT.

Rotary in Namasuba was introduced by The Rotary Club of Muyenga. Although the breaking

started in January 2017, real work started in March 2017 under the guidance of DGSR (Club Advisor) Rtn J.C Muli Mubiru (PHF). In Starting The Rotary Club of Namasuba Rtn Mubiru was assited by: PAG Joseph Kasozi, PAG David Balaka and the entire mother club RC Muyenga. RC Namasuba was admitted to Rotary on 30th May 2018 under RI Number 89314. The club received its Charter Certifi cate on 20th October 2018 by Inspirational District Governor Shamilla Bhatt.

A drive was launched to bring together individuals who would share a common vision i.e “To provide lasting solutions to world problems.” especially the most vulnerable in our catchment area (Namasuba). Therefore, serving humanity became our main business. To carry out this mission successfully we needed to have a strategic plan in place drafted around the following 7(Seven) Strong ROTARY pillars:

1-MEMBERSHIP: We needed members to be chartered. By January 2017, we had 4 members and by the time of charter (30 May 2018) we were 27(Twenty Seven). On Charter night, (October 20, 201 8), we Inducted 3 (Three) new members and, at that point, we had achieved our set membership target of 30 members. The

strategic vision was and, still is, to induct members of substance that will drive the club forward. Along the way we lost some members for one reason or another. However during DG’s visit 2019, we inducted 7(Seven) new members. What is gratifying is the fact that, all the 7 non- charter members inducted last year (2019), are fully engaged in club leadership and administration. We have reduced our average age to slightly over 40 years and we have balanced the gender ratio to 50/50 male and female.

2-MEMBERSHIP GROWTH Although we have not been able to retain as many members as we had hoped to have. NEVERTHELESS we have several prospective members undergoing mentorship. We also aspire to charter a community based Rotaract club. Also, our annual Youth sponsorship in RYLA is growing in number.

3- HUMANTARIAN SERVICE PROJECTS: The success of any club is measured

by the number of service projects undertaken , Since April 2019 with our fi rst Family Health camp at Namasuba Catholic Church, we have vigorously pursued this goal. That was followed with the same at Kyebe Kanabulemu. To this end the strategic vision is to have our club qualify annually for Global Grants which will enable the club to carry out many Service projects. The club has members who are experts in proposal writing and, I am sure many projects will be drafted. Several projects are still in the pipeline including our very fi rst Global Grant.

4- GIVING TO THE ROTARY FOUNDATION (TRF): This Rotary year the club started with 2 m(Two) members who were Paul Harris Fellows. We have concluded the year with 7 PHFs including one member who is not only PHF+1, but is a Paul Harris Society member. The Strategic Vision is to encourage this number to grow Horizontally (i.e Having 100% members PHF), and Vertically (i.e up to Major Donor level). I am sure we will achieve this. As a club, our contribution towards Polio Plus continues to grow. We are encouraging members to each give at least $30 to the Rotary Foundation as Every Rotarian Every year (EREY). In total To date, the club has contributed a total of USD 7,000 to TRF in its fi rst 2 years.

BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE CLUB

Page 20: Rotary Club of Namasuba

Rotary Club of Namasuba

Installation Magazine20

5-LEADERDERSHIP / STEWARDSHIP/CONTINUITYThe club now has enough members across several classifi cations. For continuity we are installing our Third club president with her full “Opportunity” team i,e , A full board as well as committees to steer the club through 2020/21 and beyond. We have both our PE in Hajati Rehema Ndagire and PN in Rtn Joseph Lwevuze. We have maintained both Shilling and Dollar Bank accounts, Our books of accounts are annually externally audited, and in February 2019, the club was registered as a legal entity with URSB Therefore our club is fully compliant with Rotary guidelines.

6-PUBLIC IMAGE: The club has presence on the www:rotaryclubnamasuba.org, email address: [email protected]. We are active on the Rotary On-line Tools: My Rotary, Rotary Club central and Club runner. We have perfected our

branding and we are fi nalizing on our Billboard project on Entebbe Highway. We need to get our monthly newsletter “The Skyliner” off the ground.

The club has members who are serving outside the club, at country and District levels. We have been regular participants in the annual Cancer Run and Football 5 Aside. We had representation in both the 94th and 95th District Conferences and Assemblies. We have members who have already registered for the 96th DCA. We had members who had registered for the Rotary convention in Honolulu.

7-CLUB MEETINGS: The heart of any club has already taken root in our club. We have secured a state of the art Club meeting venue, we have attracted many inspirational speakers to come and share with us on many Rotary and other topical themes. We have very strong and strategic

partnerships with many clubs especially those clubs under Entebbe Road Solidarity.

Whatever others say, As a club we are still growing. We still need to deepen our Rotary knowledge, we still need to let our members fully understand why we have to pay lots of money in dues and other ways, to serve humanity. Why we have to visit other clubs not only for mentorship but in order for those Rotarians to reciprocate our visits, Why we have to give more to The Rotary Foundation. We need to fortify our buddy groups and our Family of Rotary. Members have to continue to bond by engaging in our club member bonding strategies. In other words, we still need to know Why we do what we do in Rotary.

We indeed need to bring forth a myriad of opportuniti es to our communiti es through the diff erent projects we undertake in all ways possible.

On my part as District Govenor nominnee district 9214, my nominati on was so humbling and I would like to boldly extend my appreciati on to everybody who saw me fi tti ng. Let me place on record, from the onset, that I am enthusiasti c, indefati gable, charged, empowered, and rearing to go with this mandate of leadership that I have been entrusted with by our district. I am sure that with all that we have done, what we are going to do and what we are planning to do, the sky should not be the limit; our hands should be the limit. Let us work together, let us prepare to raise our bar higher.

I am deeply thrilled that many women are taking up presidenti al roles not just on the Entebbe Road Solidarity but in the whole district. To me this is life changing and brings deep sati sfacti on.

Susan, as you take on leadership as the 3rd President of this relatively young Club but which is making great strides as exemplifi ed since its formation, I do not only congratulate you but wish you a year of taking the Club to yet another level. Make your mark.

I trust and I believe that you will all work together as a team to deliver a remarkable year of Rotary Opening Opportunities for yourselves as Rotarians and for the communities you serve.

Friendships do have major impacts on our health and well-being. At the Rotary Club of Namasuba, I’ve found genuine friends with whom we celebrate good times and

provide support during bad times.

Members of RC Namasuba do increase our sense of belonging and purpose, boost our happiness and reduce our stress. They improve our self-confi dence and self-worth.

Many adults fi nd it hard to develop new friendships or keep up existing friendships. Friendships may take a back seat to other priorities, such as work or caring for children or aging parents. You and your friends may have grown apart due to changes in your lives or interests. Or maybe you’ve moved to a new community and haven’t yet found a way to meet people.

Developing and maintaining good friendships takes eff ort. The enjoyment and comfort friendship

can provide, however, makes the investment worthwhile.

Quality friends count more than quantity, I’ve found the friends at RC Namasuba very qualitative and instrumental. I’ve been inspired by CP George Musitwa in fellowships, we have connected with Prof Jude in fun activities, fellowships, parties and trainings and we are ready to open opportunities with President Suzan as we off er service above self. You are invited to join rotary and benefi t from this wealth of friendship in all fi elds of life.

Congratulations President Suzan Samula upon your installation as the 3rd President of RC Namasuba.

We are overwhelmed by what we have achieved during our year. With the tremendous e orts of President Jude and as a directorate committee we have demonstrated that we are “People of Action”. As a club we have

I am a Rotarian because in Rotary, l discovered my purpose. My core values, my

joy – all these are espoused in a mission and vision of Rotary and that is what keeps me in motion. I will continue being a Rotarian for a long, long time.

I am extremely delighted to have served as Club Administration Director of the Rotary Club of Namasuba,( RCN). I am equally excited as a Charter member to have witnessed the highs and lows, the literal birth pains of seeing this club grow and be seen in the Rotary fraternity. ank you RCN members for trusting and also working with me.

For one to live and have a wonderful life one needs people and to live a bad or a poor unsuccessful life one still needs people. Experience has it that in the world we live in today with the much information available on the many platforms – social and electronic media name it, one’s ability to survive and lead a successful life depends on ones strength in ones intelligence in controlling his/her emotions.

In Rotary there are opportunities to meet people, which people are driven by the spirit of service above self through the Rotary norms. We are always reminded in the rst two norms of the four way test of whether whatever one is saying is the truth and whether it is fair to all concerned. Once mentored to be a Rotarian, one has little or no insight in

the behavior of your fellow Rotarians especially those in ones club for one will nd out that they are humans and from di erent backgrounds and therefore they have their highs and lows, but they will require you one day to do service to them or to be of service of others. Because Rotary is designed to be a life commitment, they will need you one day to reach out, to sit and listen and sometimes o er your advice, whisper or shout at them, apologize, re ect, improve and strengthen your character as you support them to strengthen

theirs. is is actually creating a support system for one no matter at what level of life one is at, the reaping of this bene t lies in one’s ability to control ones emotions.

e reality is the reason why one meets people in Rotary and elsewhere because we need them to change our lives as well as theirs at one time and those of others. For one to harness the skill of controlling ones emotions and intelligence helps one to make use of the new people one meets, build a network and have an idea of

is has made me discover my purpose in rotary, my shared values espoused in a mission and vision of Rotary keeps me going and has led me to believe that Rotary is central to improving who I am. And l am sure rotary will still be around to support me to improve my character as well as other peoples and who they are through the spirit of service above self. A MIRACULOUS PAUL HARRIS FELLOW RECOGNITION

It was a day like this on 6th July 2019 during the installation of my club’s second President when l was recognized as the “Rotarian of the year 2018/2019. e Chief Guest of the day while making his speech decided to recognize me too by o ering to pay for my PHF. Incidentally, I had already contributed $300 dollars for that cause so he o ered to top up and completed the deal! I had no words at that moment when the Chair of Chairs for the Recognition Dinner, Rtn. MD. Deo Kandikumutima made that pledge.

On 30th November, 2019 I was honored and decorated a Paul Harris Fellow by Governor

Xavier Sentamu at the Rotary Foundation Recognition Dinner held at Protea Hotel, Kampala. When I was called to receive the rappel pin, I was very thrilled and excited.

It had never occurred to me that I could get such an honor so early in my short life as a Rotarian. But thanks to Rtn. MD. Deo Kalikumutima and the many Rotarian friends and my passion for Rotary plus the understanding of the meaning of contributing to International Organization’s (Rotary) operations ampli ed by the supportive e orts of e Rotary Foundation (TRF).

I understand that giving is inherent to how we coexist. We give and receive attention, love and opinions, time and other resources as we deem ourselves best equipped. It is an instinct for which we are seldom aware, rightfully; but one that we Rotarians have come to understand, appreciate, nurture and practice to its fullest.“I cannot do all the good that the world needs, but the world needs all the good that I can do” - Jana Stan eld.

When one gives to the Rotary Foundation (TRF), the money goes to the Annual Program Fund where these contributions are invested for a three years’ period. In the third year, the money is divided 50/50 between districts and World Fund (WF).

e other monies referred to as the Endowment Fund are

invested permanently to build long term stability for the Foundation’s future. Only the interest is spent; and ere is the Designated Fund, which supports speci c Initiatives such as Polio Plus, Peace Scholars or speci c Grants.

Given the above, for me becoming a Paul Harris Fellow is a tremendous accomplishment and honor as through the Rotary Foundation which is the Economic Engine for Rotary International transforms my contribution into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world in the six Rotary Areas of focus namely Maternal and Child Health, Peace and Con ict Resolutions, Water and Sanitation, Basic Education and Literacy, Disease Prevention and Treatment and Economic Development and Empowerment.Paul Harris fellows, in a very tangible way provide a stepping stone to a more harmonious world. It is therefore my joy to be part of the people who “serve above self” and encourage colleagues to endeavor to attain that commitment just as l did. I pledge to continue giving from my heart and hope that one day I will attain the highest class of giving in Rotary.

serve with action, expand, increase impact and create sustainable everlasting change.

Today Rotary clubs and leaderships are adopting to using e-platform in order to continue the rotary service. For the rst time ever, we see E-conferences, conventions and more engagement with media and social media platforms such as Televisions, Radios, Facebook, zoom, GoToMeeting, google meet etc. e future perhaps is going digital and this is our opportunity as Rotarians and leaders in our respective clubs continue what Paul Harris started in an innovative way. e Innovations open opportunities to increasing impact faster, more visibility of rotary activities through medias such as using TV, radio, and thus growth.

As we begin the opportunity year, we thank the connecting leadership and from what they have established in the respective clubs is the legacy the opportunity leadership will carry and continue to expand we as open opportunities to serve and foster impact in communities. is our opportunity to open and seize opportunities.

Towards the end of every Rotary year, Presidents Elect (PEs) and a few eager Rotarians always want to know the theme of the next coming Rotary year announced by the Rotary International President Elect. As PEs, we went through the same. I must say that our togetherness started when a watsapp group for PEs was formed. While we were President Nominees (PNs), there was nothing much from us which in my view is wrong. We didn’t know each other so there was nothing to share, plan or do. We were lucky to bond quickly as PEs. I therefore suggest that PNs should not wait to bond only when they are PEs, start today! For my case, I joined the group much later since most Rotarians thought that I had already been a President of Makindye. Whenever, I would tell people I

was a PE, they would not believe me. at is why I was missing on the PEs watsapp forum until I was talking to PE Petra of Kampala Ssese Islands who also asked me the PE for Makindye. I found myself on the DREAM TEAM whatsapp forum and when I checked through, I saw DGE then, Xavier Sentamu and others I knew but it didn’t click my mind what the watsapp group was about. e rst person to be surprised was the DGE. I remember him saying that they should only add PEs only and asked what Kayi was doing on the group! Sheila Abaasa of Mabarara and others were active and looking for all PEs to join the group. I too joined my colleagues on looking for other PEs. We were called the Dream Presidents. I remember Past Presidents making fun of us as dreamers(One of them is CP

Zaake of Wandegeya). We were coming after Romantic names like; world Class Presidents, All Star Presidents, Mission Green Presidents and others. After getting a good number of us, the DGE suggested that we organize a “MEET and GREET “ where he would share his vision with us. is was agreed around November 2018 and our rst meeting attracted over 60 PEs. is was the rst time we put our faces to the names that were on the group. I must say that from that time, we never became the same again. We zeroed on Roots on Entebbe Road owned by Rtn. Okello of RC Kampala.Several District o cials were invited to inspire, motivate and encourage us, amongst who were PDG Mwanje and Rtn. Juliet Kyokunda. ose who have listened to PDG Stephen Mwanje’s talk, you can imagine

The Connecting year 2019/2020

what he shared with us that day. According to the DGE then, PDG Stephen Mwanje was supposed to have launched our name the DREAM TEAM but I don’t remember what happened because he didn’t. But we kept calling ourselves the Dream team.Among the activities we did that day was to elect our Executive; President of Presidents, Vice President of Presidents/ Public Relations, Secretary, Treasurer and chairs of di erent Regions of Uganda. Our Executive was tasked to mobilise and support ourselves in all our Club activities, namely; Installations, Club projects, and others. I must say we may not have scored 100% but we tried. I remember during installations, we agreed to share our dates and time so that we would avoid having more than three installations at the same time on the same day. is worked some how compared to years before ours.when Rotary International President Elect (RIPE) then, Mark Daniel Maloney

announced the theme year as Connecting year, debate on what we should call ourselves during our year of service started. I remember RIPE addressing us as ALOHA TEAM. Some of our colleagues wanted us to remain as the DREAM TEAM (DGEs choice), others wanted Aloha Presidents, Connecting Presidents, World Connecting Presidents to mention but a few. During the District Conference and Assembly (DCA) of 2019 in Dar, we held two meetings as PEs with our DGE (please take note that a good number of us were there) and one of the issues we discussed was on how to be addressed as. at is when we zeroed on WORLD CONNECTING PRESIDENTS and within no time, we buried the name DREAM TEAM. I am very sure that few of you readers can recall that we ever called ourselves ‘ e Dream Team.’ e second issue that we discussed was a welfare committee which was elected and headed by PEs Goretti Masade and Hajjat Sa na Musene who have played a very big role in our togetherness. When time for us to work nally came (July 1, 2019), we were very much in touch with each other. To spice our Presidency was when the District Governor(DG) Xavier Sentamu told us not to go through his Personal Assistant whenever we needed him. is also made us close to him both as the Executive and Presidents. As the name suggests, “ e connecting” name rhymed very well with us the Presidents. We held several meetings both in Kampala and outside Kampala to discuss ways of making our

Clubs as well as understanding ourselves better.Having got a chance of being part of the Executive, I must say I am humbled by the level of connection we have exhibited as a team. As we retire, I would like thank our DG who not only was our leader but our friend too. e Executive I have been working with and all the Connecting Presidents have been an amazing team. It might go on record that we are the rst Presidents in history of Rotary in Uganda to end our quarter in a total lock down and for that matter doing our business on line. Installations, charter celebrations are being held scienti cally but the Connecting Presidents have remained strong and we are ready to continue with the solidarity. ere are very few Rotary Clubs which didn’t conduct business because of the lock down. e majority of Clubs have been doing business as usual. Finally PE Susan, you are taking over Presidency from a not simple President, Jude Lubega. His busy schedule aside, has really availed himself to us whenever we needed his services. AND ON A PERSONAL NOTE, ALLOW ME TO THANK RTN. JOSEPH LWEVUZE KISAKYE OF RC NAMASUBA FOR THE SUPPORT HE HAS GIVEN ME THROUGH MY PRESIDENCY. I WILL ONLY PRAY FOR HIM TO HAVE GOOD HEALTH AND A BETTER LIFE FOR HIS GOOD DEEDSKayitarama GodfreyRC Makindye

Rotary moment How Parking space for Burial led to one rotarian help a vulnerable family

The story below looks at a how a rotarian who had gone for burial ended up resolving to construct a good shelter for a needy family in Kibuku district.

Kalireku sulaiman is the man married to Byogero Amina and both are parents of Ndoboli kalifani who is aged 10yrs .

Kalireku sulaiman and the game are residents of Nansyono A, saala Parish, Kirika sub county, Kabweri constituency in Kibuku District.

Rtn Magoola, a member of RC Namasuba helped those bazeeyi put up that shelter. He did not know them but one time when he had gone to attend a funeral he saw their place because that is where he parked his car. It was in a very sorry state and when he looked at the couple and listened to their story, he decided to mobilise resources and put up that house.

ASP Tenywa David offi cer in charge Kikajjo Police Station. It has been three and a half years for the time I have been in charge this area as in charge security. I was deployed in this area towards the end of 2016 and the crime rate was too high. The fi rst day in the offi ce the fi rst case was fi rst of motorcycle, burglary and theft, and mob justice as well house breaking.

During that period canine department of Nsambya Police, Masajja area was ever their daily route with the snipher dog to truck the criminals who where involving in those crime. In that very, year we registered 8 cases and theft of M/V and MC respectively most of them where recovered due the quick responses whenever the cases where reported.

The cases of mob justices was almost the order of the day, they were caught in cases particularly in phone snatching, scrap deals among others. Generally the crime rate was high quiet often my bosses could call me to rescue people who

had been attacked by thugs late at night.

Under that situation I had to identify black spot, analyzing the trend of crime partners, identify possible stake hold who could support the security for the good cause, identifying the hard core criminal and their movements, empowering the local leaders on concerning security. Also the crime rate this was to due to high numbers of school dropouts.

We also developed a holistic approach through capacity building, community sensitization under community policing, understanding the geographical set up of the area, liaising with members of the sister forces for joint operation. A female cell facility was also constructed after realizing rampant cases of domestic violence among the co-wives. Giving out personal and offi cial contacts to members of the public for quick reporting of incidences and almost 90% of the people have the police contacts. Securing additional motors cycles to

ease on the transport and reaching to incidences in the shortest time possible.

Forming of whatsapp group on security matters concerning our area and the surrounding, this has created more alertness and enables members to share security matters and issues of national concern. All these are managed and coordinated as a team.

All these have been maintained through community policing and continuous agreement with the community to identify the gaps and fi xing them correctly the public have developed confi dence in the police since the early criminals who were terrorizing the community have been managed well and sentenced to prison for further rehabilitation.

The youth who where drug addicts have been provided with psycho social counseling and some referred to rehabilitation centers for treatment and visiting schools and sensitizing the students against the use of drugs.

BY ROTARIAN JOSEPH MUKASA OUTGOING CLUB TREASURER

I have been privileged to serve as the treasurer for the Rotary club of Namasuba in the Rotary year 2019/ 2020 under the wise leadership of the World connecti ng president Jude. I am very grateful to the President Jude for the trust and opportunity given to me to serve in this strategic but important offi ce. As you are all aware fi nancial management is very key in all clubs and other originati ons.

The treasurer is a key person in the club’s management. He/She is represented on the club’s board or committ ee, and take overall responsibility for its fi nancial management. The size of this job will depend on how big the club is and whether there are other people who can help. The treasurer’s role includes reporti ng on actual fi nances and seeking out the best ways to use available funds.

The treasurer needs the following stati onery to perform their job eff ecti vely:

• cheque books

• a cash book or general ledger

• payment authorizati on vouchers

• a numbered receipt book with carbon copy page

• account forms for members’ subscripti ons

• a fi le for accounts payable, that is, amounts owing to suppliers for goods and services purchased

• a fi le to store receipts from accounts paid

• a fi le of orders placed with suppliers

• a fi le to store bank statements.

Important books of accounts and acti viti es to maintain as a club are as below;

CASHBOOKS

A cashbook is a journal in which all of the club’s receipts and payments are recorded. ‘Cash’ includes actual money, cheques and money orders. There will be receipts and cheque butt s, but the cashbook records the details of all transacti ons.

BANK ACCOUNTS

The club will need a cheque account. Cheque books provide a simple and eff ecti ve way to track the club’s spending. Usually clubs have fi nance management committ ee members (including the treasurer) who are authorized to jointly sign the club’s cheques. Three members may be authorized, with only two required to validate the cheque. The club’s bank statement also provides an accurate record of spending. You can choose the frequency of these statements.

BUDGETS

The club will require an annual budget. This is the responsibility of the treasurer and is agreed on by the club’s executi ve committ ee. Once the budget is approved, it is added into your accounti ng system so that it can be compared to the club’s actual income and expenses. You can use either an Excel spreadsheet or a manual cashbook for the club’s budget.

AUDITS

The club’s fi nancial records will be audited from ti me to ti me. During an audit, a person independent of the club (such as an accountant) checks that the fi nancial statements are a correct record of the fi nancial positi on of the club at the ti me of the audit.

Auditi ng can be a lengthy process and it is a good idea to allow six to eight weeks for an audit to be completed. Your club’s auditor will need:

• the club’s cashbooks, writt en up and balanced for the year, and journals or ledgers that the club uses for records

• bank statements for the whole year

• copies of deposit slips and cheque bu tt s

• receipt books with duplicate and original copies, plus any unused receipt books

• vouchers for payments made by the club, arranged in numerical order

• receipts or copies of cheques paid to your club

• copies of minutes from your management meeti ngs that show how fi nancial decisions were made and agreed

• copies of any previous audit statements

• any other relevant fi nancial documents

My beautiful Rotary journeyEvery moment as a member of this mighty Rotary

Club of Namasuba has been very memorable, especially seeing how the club and members

have been growing till date. I have learnt a lot as a member and later at the helm of the club leadership, as the 3rd Treasurer. I have always been challenged but with a wonderful team, my leadership skills continued to grow. Best Momentsv The many fellowships held at Skybeach and

virtually on zoom, have been an eye opener, proving to myself opportunities to connect and develop my leadership skills.

v The moments we have joined as a club with dedication and passion to carry out events like the health camps, family gatherings, club retreats, projects fundraisings, charter night celebrations and installations. These have been inspiring moments.

v I cannot forget the day I was inducted into Rotary; it was such a memorable event.

v The small things we do in Rotary; the jokes, round tables, birth day celebrations, among others, mean heaven to me.

Worst Moments

In Rotary, I have come to learn that we do not have what other people call “the worst moments” - we only have challenges that help us to learn things and help us to grow “our emotional intelligence”. To us, every moment in Rotary is memorable. Acknowledgements

The successful stay in Rotary would not have been possible without the support, advice and assistance of others.

I thank the Past President Rtn. Prof. Jude Lubega, for encouraging me to join the Club, and for nurturing me into Club leadership.

I thank Charter President Rtn. George Musiitwa – for his ever amazing and inspirational ideas.

Grateful thanks are extended to all the Club members that have contributed to my successful stay in Rotary.Special thanks go to my wife, Josephine and my sons, for their sacrifi ce, patience, interest and endless support to me as a Rotarian.
