Munera: Teach, Govern, and Sanctify. Having celebrated the Feast of the Archangels yester-day we now find ourselves in the month of October which is dedicated to Our Lady’s Rosary (feast: Oct. 7) and the Holy Angels (feast: Oct. 2). Tomorrow eve-ning we will celebrate a Traditional Latin Mass at 7:00PM, marking the one year anniversary of the Traditional Mass being offered here and weather per-mitting have a Rosary procession around the block after Mass. Our parish is blessed to have a nice num-ber of people who stay after Mass each morning to pray the Holy Rosary they are the “spiritual back-bone” of the parish. If the Rosary is not part of your regular prayer life please try to incorporate it into your daily prayer, even just one decade. I honestly wish that I could offer Rosary Devotions each night in church like I grew up with but with my pilgrimage this year it is not possible. Having celebrated the Feast of the Archangels our thoughts turn to the importance of the St. Michael prayer. There is so much evil present around us, just a month ago we remembered 9/11, the anniversary of Pearl Harbor is coming up, and broken families, drugs, addictions, pornography, abortion, racism, gun violence and all these evils and social issues which don’t get talked about properly leave dark marks on our history. I would encourage all of you to memorize the St. Michael prayer and pray it often. At one time it was said after every Low Mass along with 3 Hail Mary, and the Hail Holy Queen perhaps for good rea-son! St. John Paul II once lamented the prayer not be-ing prayed anymore. Recently, I climbed our bell tower to inspect the bells; there was a minor issue with one that was easily fixed. I met our two bells dating back to 1916 which came from the old church. The bells were cast in Troy, New York which had two Bell Foundries, sadly no longer operating. The old tradition was to consecrate bells with Sacred Chrism and name them. Our bells are named: Sigismundus, the bigger bell, and Michael, the smaller. Sigismundus seems to mean “conqueor of the world” or “Godly Gift” and perhaps is named after the famous bell in Wawel Castle, Kracow named Zyg-mond; I am speculating here. “Rev. B Malynowski, Rector” is also molded onto the bells. I must admit, visiting the bells was kind of like meeting two old friends, I am so happy we have real bells in working order! There is rust on them and work may have to be done on them in future. It was always thought that bells did not make noise but rather “called out” or pealed praising God and reminding the faithful to do the same. Bells are uniquely Christian and are used to cleanse the air of evil spirits and storms, according to the consecration prayer. So now when you hear the bells of St. Josaphat’s know that they are inviting you to prayer and sing our thanksgiving to God and ask-ing St. Michael to defend us in battle. In Christ, Fr. Saffron
