Rizals father. Instructed Jose in Spanish andLatin. Unfortunately, he died 5 months later.

After his death, Jose Rizals parents decided tosend their son to a private school in Binan.

BINAN -(June 1869) He wasaccompanied by Paciano,who acted as his 2 nd father.-They rode in a carromata,

reaching their destinationafter 1 hours drive.

-They proceeded to their Aunts house, where Josewas to lodge.

-It was almost night when they arrived. Thatsame night, with his cousin Leandro , went

sightseeing in the town.

-Instead of enjoying the sights, He becamedepressed because of homesickness.

-The next morning, Paciano brought him to the school ofMaest ro Jus t in iano Aq uino Cruz .-Jose described him as tall, thin, long necked, with a sharp

nose and a body slightly bent forward, and he used towear sinamay shIrt .

-The school was a smallnipa hut about 30 metersfrom the home of Joses

Aunt.-Paciano knew theteacher because he hadbeen a pupil under himbefore.

it was an afternoon of his first day in school, when the teacheris having his siesta, Jose met the bully, Pedro , and hechallenged him to a fight.

The latter readily accepted, thinking he could easily beat Josewho was smaller and younger.

The 2 boys wrestled into the classroom, much to the glee oftheir classmates.

Jose defeated the bigger boy, having learned the art ofwrestling from his Tio Manuel .

Because of this, he became popular among his classmates.

After the class in the afternoon, aclassmate named A nd res Saladananchallenged him to an arm wrestling match.

Jose, having a weaker arm, lost andnearly cracked his head on the sidewalk.

in succeeding days, he had other fightswith the boys of Binan.

Juancho- An old painter living near the school.- He was the father-in-law of the school teacher

-Jose spent many leisure hours at the painters studio. -Old Juancho freely gave him lessons in drawing and

painting.-Jose and his classmate, Jo se Gu evarra , who also

loved painting, became apprentices of the old painter.-They improved their art, so that in due time, theybecame the favorite painters of the class .

-Some of his older classmateswere jealous of his intellectualsuperiority.

In spite of the reputation I hadof being a good boy, the daywas unusual when I was notlaid out on a bench and givenfive or six blows.

-Before the Christmas season in 1870, Josereceived a letter from Saturnina, informinghim of the steamer Talim w/c would take him

home.-He left Binan on a Saturday afternoon,(December 17, 1870) after 1 and years ofschooling in that town.

-On board Talim was a frenchman namedArtu ro Cam ps , a friend of his father, whotook care of him.

-On the night of January 20, 1872, about 200Filipino soldiers and workmen (of the Cavitearsenal under the leadership of Lamadrid)rose in violent mutiny because of theabolition of their usual privileges. (includingexemption from tribute and polo by GovRafael d e Izquierd o)

-But after 2 days, the Cavite Mutiny wassuppressed by troop reinforcements fromManila.

-The spanish authorities magnified the failedmutiny into a revolt for Philippine

Independence.-The three leaders of the secular movement,Gomburza, was accused and wereexecuted at sunrise, despite the

Archbishops plea for clemency because oftheir innocence.

Before June of 1872,tragedy struck theRizal family.

-Dona Teodora was suddenly arrested ona malicious charge that she and Jose

Alberto (her brother) tried to poison thelatters wife.

-His wife, with the connivance of aSpanish Lieutenant, filed a case incourt. This lieutenant happened to beangry with the Rizal family.

- The lieutenant arrested Dona Teodorawith the help of Antonio Vivencio delRosario ( Calambas gobernadorcillo).

-Dona Teodora was forced to walk fromCalamba to Sta. Cruz ( capital of LagunaProvince), a distance of 50 kilometers.

-Upon arrival, she was imprisoned at theprovincial prison for 2 years and a half untilthe Manila Royal Audiencia ( supreme court)acquitted her for the alleged crime.

-Dona Teodora was defended by Franc isco deMarcaida and Man u el Marzan , the mostfamous lawyers of Manila.
