Hiking Shoes!

After a week or two of hiking, your shoes are the only thing that separates you from the rest of the mud covered animals in the forest. There are several points of view on this issue. The hikers who tend to sprint down the trail have started using basically their normal street shoes. After all what’s more comfortable than a pair of tennis shoes that you’ve broken in for 8 months? But if you’re hard core, here are some tips for selecting the perfect pair of hiking boots:

•When you go to the store always wear the socks you will hike with. Many people need a slightly larger size than normal to allow space for several layers of socks.

•Always check the fit at the store.

•All leather boots tend to be more water-resistant, however a leather/canvass combination allows for lighter boots. If you buy the combination boots there is waterproofing spray or cream available at most stores which is fairly easy to use.

•Take home your new boots and plod around in them, before you set out, always, always, always, break in your boots. Have fun, enjoy!

The Weather Outside once you get wet can be Cold!!

• Layer Up. Cold weather is like an onion, you have to have layers.

• Do NOT wear cotton. Wear clothing that will hold in body heat even when wet, such as wool.

• Wear a Hat! People lose the majority of their body heat through their heads. If you don’t have a hat wrap a piece of clothing around your head and neck or put on your rain jacket and pull up the hood, anything to minimize heat loss. If you’re really cold add layers: a hat and hood.

• Change into dry clothes immediately
