Ringling claims to be the Greatest Show on Earth, but like all businesses which exploit animals for profit, this is really the “Cruelest Show on Earth.” Will the public learn anything from lions and tigers jumping through hoops of fire? Will they learn anything from elephants pirouetting around a stool on one front leg while wearing a tutu? Bullhooks are considered weapons. You can’t carry it around with you in everyday life, yet, it is allowed for the circus handlers and trainers to use against the elephants. They are hit behind their sensitive ears and behind their knees. Look for the scars. Elephants are acquired in Africa where the mother elephants are typically shot and the baby elephant is abducted, transported to the US and then undergoes months of torture and pain in order to comply with the trainers commands. They break the spirit of the animal as well as its heart. It had never trusted humans before and it certainly never will. Another method they use to acquire elephants is to breed them in captivity. Being born into slavery and forced to perform stupid human tricks for the rest of their lives, is certainly no life at all. All this so that Ringling can perpetuate the myth that they actually care for the animals, but in reality, they only care about making money. If they truly treated these wild animals with love, respect and rewarding training techniques, we would not hear repeatedly about an animal running amok seeking revenge upon its handlers and trainers, then being shot to death by the police. In November 2011, Feld Entertainment, the parent company of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, had to pay the largest settlement of its kind in U.S. history$270,000for violations of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) dating back to 2007. Ringling, the Cruelest Show on Earth

. LAIKA (www.laikamagazine.com) is a magazine. You could say it’s a quarterly vegan lifestyle magazine. Or you could say it is simply a clear assertion that a full, vibrant, exciting, interesting and satisfying life can be had — without ever having to inflict harm on another. This is not a hypothetical notion. This is the reality. And LAIKA MAGAZINE is a reflection of this undeniable reality. It is the place where compassion and innovation intersect. Ground-breaking thinkers and doers, visionary fashion and beauty, inventive food, transformative travel experiences, stories of courageous activists and the animals they defend — are all told with uncompromising dedication and presented in a visually dynamic way. It is new and yet also familiar… familiar, because it shows what we’ve known about ourselves all along: our capacity for kindness is infinite. Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Ellen Jaffe Jones

Ellen Jaffe Jones is a U.S. consumer, health and fitness journalist and author. She is an accomplished athlete and the author of Eat Vegan on $4 a Day--A Game Plan for the Budget Conscious Cook, published in 2011. Her book, "The Kitchen Divided-Vegan Recipes for the Semi-Vegan Household" was published in summer 2013. Her third book, “Paleo Vegan” was due to her running and fitness friends embracing the paleo fad. As a former 2-time Emmy-winning TV investigative/consumer reporter/anchor for 18 years in Des Moines, Miami and St. Louis, she wrote her book after her mom, aunt and both sisters got breast cancer. Figuring out how to avoid family genes and medical history became the investigative reporting job of her life. Ellen does book signings and cooking demonstrations at major food and vegetarian festivals in the US and abroad, as well as other smaller venues. She writes columns for The Anna Maria Island Sun and Running Journal." She is a sought after trainer, coach and popular speaker for radio, TV and at conferences on how to eat well and stay fit on a budget. She recently won PETA’s Sexiest > 50 Vegan award. She also .just recently won 6 gold medals in everything from 50 to 1500 meters at the FL Senior Games, (after placing in 79 5K or longer races in the past 8 years "just" on plants).

Hi! I wanted to let you know we had a GREAT time at the Tampa Bay Veg Fest as an exhibitor this year! We loved our location and our neighbors. The atmosphere was high energy, great music, great food, lots of sweet feathery & furry friends too! We would love to be your doTERRA vendor again next year if that is a possibility. Thank you! Melissa Krueger ===================================================================================== To FVA volunteers A million thank yous for the 5th Annual Veg Fest. It was beyond words wonderful, and all of the hours of behind-the scenes work were evident in this magnificent event. It would be impressive to just have music; or to just have booths; or to just have food; or to just have speakers... but the professionalism and skill of putting all of this together each year is (almost) beyond words. The food was wonderful. The music delightful. The speakers inspirational. The booths were all informative and enlightening. Although I could not personally make myself view the video in the Pay Per View (PPV) booth, what I did focus on were the faces of those who were watching, and hearing their comments like: "That does it for eggs!". Just those transitions alone will hopefully make all of the work of the FVA volunteers worthwhile. For many of us who must live our lives among not-so-sympathetic others, seeing and feeling the energy of so many devoted animal people was awesome. My favorite folks were the three who represented three generations of being vegan with the middle (generation) being a vegan body builder. Coming close to that were the four vegan friends, each one with stories of how and why they had become vegans (and friends) as children. In addition to all of the hours of work that we all don't get to see, it was just wonderful to see all of the volunteers coming together the day of the event to donate their time to save animals. I read so many stories of people not being kind to each other, so it was so teriffic watching volunteers helping each other: relieving friends when they looked tired, bringing them food or water, helping with tents, etc.. I heard a young lady talking about all the thousands that she would have at various ages, (as in, by age 20, I will have 800, but by age 25, I will have 3000) and so on up to her million. I had thought that she was talking about money, but what she was figuring out was... if she could convince others to go vegan (and how if they, in turn, convince still others) just how many animals she will have saved as she goes through her life. The Tampa Bay Veg Fest keeps up our spirits as we go forth in a too-often uncaring world, encouraging us to keep on encouraging others (like that young lady!) I hope that it is not too soon to wish that there will be a 2015 Tampa Bay 6th Veg Fest and I look forward to helping out in any way that I can. Thank you all! Jayn Meinhardt, Cincinnati, OH
