Its boom time for RFID in IndiaFiled in archive Market Size by gautam on April 3, 2007

India is a hot destination as of now and the whole world has its eyes set on it.With its economy growing like never before it is offering immense opportunitiesfor everybody so how could RFID stay behind. Slowly and steadily RFID ispenetrating India and from defense sector to corporates and even farmers aremaking use of it. Mahindra & Mahindra, an automobile company in the country

India Gemini Traze has gone ahead and set up the first RFID plant in thecountry.

One of the reasons for the adoption of the technology in the country is thefalling costs and secondly the semiconductor policy of the government isfavoring it. One can now certainly predict boom time for RFID in India.

Rural India banking all set to benefit from RFID

India which is one of the hottest destinations currently since its growing likeanything and with number of developed countries looking forward to benefitfrom it the country is getting to taste RFID technology in a subtle manner andthis time not its urban cities but its rural region stand to gain from it. NXPSemiconductors has partnered with seven banks in four states in India to offerits RFID based mobile payment solution in more than four hundred and fiftyvillages in these states. The RFID based cell phone will be working with ZEROwhich is a micro banking platform from A Little World. More than forty fivethousand rural populations will benefit from it and avail services such asdeposits and withdrawals, micro insurance and cashless payments withoutvisiting the bank branches.

Under this pilot the RFID card being used is similar to the one in e-Passportsbeing used in more than thirty five countries and villagers will be able toconduct banking on their doorsteps since the complete database of customersalong with those of nearby areas would be stored in the phone itself with dueemphasis given on the security aspect. The smart card in the phone willbiometrically store identity details of the customers coupled with details of theirbank account. Banking density is quite low in India and as per Reserve Bank ofIndia around forty percent of Indians don't have any access to formal financialservices therefore it would surely benefit these very people. With telecomrevolution already taking place in the country and mobile phone density

increasing like never before a number of people will be able to benefit fromRFID. Looks like this technology will play an important role in furtherdevelopment of the country.

Now it's the turn of cars in India to get tagged

The Ministry of Heavy Industries is pondering over the idea of making itobligatory for all car manufacturers to affix RFID enabled devices in carsmanufactured in India. With motorists ready to violate traffic laws at the drop ofhat in the country coupled with lack of men and machinery to tame them has

made the government opt for this idea. Thus is expected to improve the trafficmanagement system in the country as it would be easier to identify incidencesof traffic violation on the roads and motorists entering toll area will be chargedautomatically. Does this mean reduced traffic violation incidences and increasein government? Let's see how far this system goes in taming down the roguemotorists in India who have been holding traffic laws to ransom for quite sometime.

E-diploma to curb fudging of educational records in India

If you are an Indian student looking forward to fudge your educational recordsto land up a job in the country then beware as such ideas are bound to fail at allcost because of RFID. In one such instance University of Hyderabad in India isawarding masters and doctoral graduates with diplomas embedded with RFIDtags encoding the name of the student, graduation date, degree awarded alongwith photograph of the face of the student. Awarding of RFID based diplomaswas thought of after a number of fraudulent cases were reported and Indiangovernment issued directives to educational institutes to guarantee the

genuineness of the diplomas and degrees awarded by them.

Now no more bribes to obtain driving licenses in India

Indians are certainly not known for their driving skills and most of this isattributed to corruption at the various regional transport authority offices issuingdriving licenses without even conducting tests of the driver but the Regional

Transport Authority of Hyderabad is expected to change all this for the good.

Now the authorities will keep a strict watch on the driving test tracks with theirRFID system which will automate testing for driver licenses. The driving trackswill be buried with RFID readers and drivers looking for licenses will have todrive vehicles fitted with antennas which will give report regarding speed limits, variations in movement and any wrong turns taken by the applicant. This willenable to judge the applicant in a fair manner since charges of manipulationhave been made against the motor vehicle inspectors

For the pilot, Cubic is issuing approximately 5,000 smart cards to passengersriding on one of the many bus routes operated by the Delhi TransportCorporation. The cards will be processed by Cubics Driver Control Unit, an on-bus processing platform that integrates automatic fare collection, GPS-basedvehicle tracking, passenger counting and security.

The Cubic system piloted in Delhi is based on the same contactless RFID

technology that Cubic has implemented in major transport systems around theworld including London, Washington D.C., Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, SanFrancisco and Brisbane, Australia.

Hassle-free smart card on Western Railway

Finally, Western Railway (WR) commuters can avail of the facilities offered bythe Mumbai Go smart card. The project, which has already been introduced by

Central Railway and the BEST, was inaugurated on WR by its general managerRN Verma on Tuesday.According to the officials, 359 high-speed entry and exit validators have beeninstalled at stations across WR from Churchgate to Virar. These machines havealso been installed in connecting subways and foot-over-bridges.Explaining the process, Verma said that these cards will have to be shown atthe station where the journey is commencing, and again at the exit validator.Once that is done, the fare amount will be debited. This is deducted from thee-purse of the card, said Verma.

Commuters will have to pay a one-time cost of Rs35 and the card can be loadedwith any amount between Rs50 and Rs5,000.To prevent fraud, ticket checkers have been equipped with hand-held devices toensure the card is not misused.
