PRAYER OF THE DAY
The presiding minister leads in the prayer.
E pule, Kakou. Let us pray.
A brief silence
O God, you gave your only Son to suffer death on the cross for our
redemption, and by his glorious resurrection you delivered us from the
power of death. Make us die every day to sin, that we may live with him
forever in the joy of the resurrection, through your Son, Jesus Christ our
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and forever.
Amen.
WORD
God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.
FIRST READING: Isaiah 25:6-9
More than 700 years before Christ, the prophet Isaiah proclaims the
good news of God’s salvation and calls all people to rejoice! God will
make a rich feast for all people. God will wipe the tears from their eyes.
And most importantly, God will destroy death itself.
A reading from Isaiah.
6On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines,
of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.
7And he will destroy on this mountain
the shroud that is cast over all peoples,
the sheet that is spread over all nations;
8he will swallow up death forever.
Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces,
and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth,
for the LORD has spoken.
9It will be said on that day,
Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save
us.
6
This is the LORD for whom we have waited;
let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PSALM: Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24
1Give thanks to the LORD, for the LORD is good;
God’s mercy endures forever.
2Let Israel now declare,
“God’s mercy endures forever.”
14The LORD is my strength and my song,
and has become my salvation.
15Shouts of rejoicing and salvation echo in the tents of the righteous:
“The right hand of the LORD acts valiantly!
16The right hand of the LORD is exalted!
The right hand of the LORD acts valiantly!”
17I shall not die, but live,
and declare the works of the LORD.
18The LORD indeed punished me sorely,
but did not hand me over to death.
19Open for me the gates of righteousness;
I will enter them and give thanks to the LORD.
20“This is the gate of the LORD;
here the righteous may enter.”
21I give thanks to you, for you have answered me
and you have become my salvation.
22The stone that the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
23By the LORD has this been done;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
24This is the day that the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

SECOND READING: Acts 10:34-43
Peter crosses the immense religious and social boundary that separates
Jews from Gentiles in order to proclaim the good news of Jesus’ life,
death, and resurrection, so that God’s forgiveness in Jesus’ name would
reach out to all people.
A reading from Acts.
34Peter began to speak to [the people]: “I truly understand that God
shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does
what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the
people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the
baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth
with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and
healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem.
They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on
the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us
who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him
after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people
and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living
and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who
believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The Strife Is O'er, the Battle
Done (ELW 366)
The assembly stands to welcome the gospel.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
1 The strife is o'er, the battle done;
now is the victor's triumph won!
Now be the song of praise begun. Alleluia!
2 The pow'rs of death have done their worst;
Jesus their legions has dispersed.
Let shouts of holy joy outburst. Alleluia!
3 The three sad days have quickly sped,
Christ rises glorious from the dead.
All glory to our risen head! Alleluia!
4 Christ closed the yawning gates of hell;
the bars from heav'n's high portals fell.
Let hymns of praise his triumph tell. Alleluia!
5 Lord, by the stripes that wounded you,
from death's sting free your servants too,
that we may live and sing to you. Alleluia!
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

GOSPEL: Mark 16:1-8
The resurrection of Jesus is announced, and the response is one of terror
and amazement.
The holy gospel according to Mark.
Glory to you, O Lord.
1When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of
James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint
[Jesus’ body]. 2And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun
had risen, they went to the tomb. 3They had been saying to one another,
“Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” 4When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large,
had already been rolled back. 5As they entered the tomb, they saw a
young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they
were alarmed. 6But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking
for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not
here. Look, there is the place they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples
and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see
him, just as he told you.” 8So they went out and fled from the tomb, for
terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone,
for they were afraid.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY Now the Green Blade Rises (ELW 379)
The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song.
All rights reserved. Reprinted under One License #725244-A
1 Now the green blade rises from the buried grain,
wheat that in dark earth many days has lain;
love lives again, that with the dead has been;
love is come again like wheat arising green.
2 In the grave they laid him, love by hatred slain,
thinking that he would never wake again;
laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen;
love is come again like wheat arising green.
12
3 Forth he came at Easter, like the risen grain,
he that for three days in the grave had lain;
raised from the dead, my living Lord is seen;
love is come again like wheat arising green.
4 When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain,
your touch can call us back to life again,
fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been;
love is come again like wheat arising green.
NICENE CREED
The Nicene Creed or the Apostles’ Creed may be spoken. The Nicene
Creed is appropriate during Advent, Christmas, Easter, and on festival
days; the Apostles’ Creed during Lent and at other times.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
13
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
