RESEARCHING DESIGN AND NEW MEDIA

Page 2: Researching Design and Media

The work in this brief focuses on work that was completed in brief 2 and 4.

Brief 2 - focused on Imagination and Memory

Brief 4 - focused on Suspense, Anticipation and Revelation

In brief 5 we are asked to choose a piece of work that we created in earlier briefs and also to pick a piece from the books stated in the handbook. The final outcome of the brief is to gather responses to the two pieces chosen. We had to come up with questions to relate to focused on Suspense, An-ticipation and Revelation. We then had to gather feedback from a select amount of people using a chosen technique.

The method i had chosen was Video Responses to my questions. This was because i felt people might prefer to speak off the top of their head and also you get a direct response first thoughts. The only negative side was some people dont like being on camera.

ANAYSIS

• Imagination - The faculty or action of forming new ideas, or images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses: “a vivid imagination”.

• Memory - The power of the mind to remember things: “the brain regions responsible for memory”.

• Suspense - A quality in a work of fiction that arouses excited expec-tation or uncertainty about what may happen.

• Anticipation - The action of antici-pating something; expectation or prediction.

• Revelation - A surprising and previously unknown fact, esp. one made in a dramatic way.

I had to research the meanings behind the five bullet points to get a better idea on what the questions were meant to be based on. I also did some research into MK12 and found a good piece from the book ‘Motion Blur 2’. I loved his motion work and i also looked a other work that also that i could use. The negative side of this would be i was looking for a 3D artist but the book i had didn’t have any.

BRIEF 5DEVELOPMENT

1. In each piece of work do they show and idea of memories? 2. Does each piece represent a place in your life that you can

relate to? 3. What impressions does each piece give across to an audience,

as you as the viewer? 4. Does the colors used fit in well with the piece and do they give

you any emotions/feelings? 5. Does the font/type work well and is it readable in each piece?6. Is the piece athletically pleasing? 7. How would you adapt each piece of work? 8. Do certain kinds of work appeal to certain audiences? 9. Which emotions relate to each piece?10. Does the still image show more imagination then moving im-

ages?11. Does each piece show some kind of suspense?12. How is the atmosphere portrayed to the viewer in each piece?13. In each piece is there a clear narrative/story?14. In each piece of work is there a sense of realism?15. Has the artist used clear imagination their piece?

Piece One: 3D Text: Poverty – Display a message that re-lates to the image of a house in South Africa. The Text gives a story of what we wouldn’t notice about the image. The Text has been placed here to show what is behind the image/area.

Piece Two: MK12 // Brazil Inspired - A piece of motion graph-ics. Themed to go with the colors of brazil. (2002) Created by Mk12

FINALOUTCOME As i only asked 4 people and 15 questions, i feel that i really could of got more information and from another perspective. However my responses i got didn’t really give me too much feedback. I think this could of been down to on the spot on video because i asked for a first response. I have learn from this that people need to maybe read the questions before or i could gather more information on paper as from personal experience i like to have time to think about my answers. I gathered from my findings that people around the age 18 - 25 knew more about the subject. This is probably to do with the modern technology and the older generation couldn’t achieve stuff like this at their age. I asked a mixture of professions from working class to upper class and postgraduate and unemployed. The working class subject and postgraduate gave the best responses. I also feel that the male generation understood more. I think next time i do a qualitative research i would stick to the basic method of writing answers. This is because i believe it works well and from my media production course i learnt alot about methods and col-lecting data.

BRIEF 9DEVELOPMENT1) Poster One: Yes it does, this is because it is showing the website url of ‘wikileaks.org’ and the font is clear and layed out pretty well.Poster Two: No, because it looks like an advert in a newspaper and doesn’t interact well with the audience that it wants to get at.Poster Three: Yes, the clear reverse psy-chology in the posters work, if you see the image on the left is much better than the one on the right handside. Poster Four: No, it’s not clear at all just looks like a graffiti somebody with anger issues would do.

2) Poster One: The process is clear, how-ever the spray painted design could be better with more careful attention.Poster Two: No, it’s not thought out very well. Poster Three: It is thought out well, how-ever the minimal design can be seen as a weakness to some but to others an easy way to look at the information that is shown.Poster Four: No, it’s just somebody using

BREIF: 9 Response - Onevulgar language to get a point across in a mediated way.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

BRIEF 9DEVELOPMENT1.IMAGE ONE: YesIMAGE TWO: YesIMAGE THREE: YesIMAGE FOUR: No2.IMAGE ONE: yes, I think there has been little thought behind the actual making of these protest boards as they look scruffy. However, the graphics to the right look professional and had they have been executed in a more professional style they would be much more impressive.IMAGE TWO: Yes. These designs are bold and eye-catching. They are simple yet ef-fective.IMAGE THREE: Yes. These protest boards are striking.IMAGE FOUR: Yes. This image looks as though it has been created using a stencil which the artist presumably made himself. 3.IMAGE ONE: Yes, because this is a sub-ject that interests me.IMAGE TWO: No. I don’t think these post-ers convey their message clearly enough for me to even know what I’d be research-

Black and white is bold and eye-catching.IMAGE TWO: Yes. The colours are simple and striking. IMAGE THREE: Yes, for the same reasons as answered for image one above.IMAGE FOUR: No, I wouldn’t expect that the colour of this piece was considered greatly by the artist. However, it is still bold and draws attention. 5.IMAGE ONE: Anyone who visits wikileaks.org or anybody who is interested in the subject matter.IMAGE TWO: The subjects are two varied to have one specific audience.IMAGE THREE: People that attend or visit Central Saint Martins.IMAGE FOUR: Any members of the gen-eral public that pass by the area in which the graffiti is displayed.6.My answers for each image would be the

FINALOUTCOME As i only got 2 responses on time i just went with it to complete on time. The answers i got from this were a mixture of being useful and useless however thats why i asked 15 ques-tions. I approached the brief better this time as i knew exactly how long i could spend on getting answers. I asked 13 people that all agreed to do it. However once they saw they had to write in a word document and the time it took i got answers that weren’t thought about I found this useful and i loved getting the feedback off a GD First year and a Fashion student with this i could compare the two. I had started on info graphics to show an outcome however i couldn’t complete this due to timing of the project dead-line. So I have included the answers in the booklet.
