Is like a ship without a sail,

Is like a boat without a rudder,

Is like a kite without a tail.

A fact without a figure is a tragic final act,

But one thing worse in this universe

Is a theory without a fact.

The course will be divided into two parts, which you are expected to act as;

Student Researcher

Business Researcher

Page 3: Research methodology concept

Student Researcher

You will select a topic which you want to explore more, create a research question related to your topic, make a literature review and finally hand out a written report in an academic way, in which you answer your research question also by using your critical, personal and unique point of view.

Business Researcher

After that, you will apply your “student researcher” skills to a business situation. You will be taught about how research in business is done, and you will be introduced to a new terminology. After gaining necessary research skills, you will research a topic by using both qualitative and quantitative methods. You will also hand out a Research Report based on your findings.

The first step in good research is gathering available facts.

Page 10: Research methodology concept

Will Turkish people buy diet potato chips? Will red covers sell more books at Christmas than blue

ones? Do people spend more money in hamburger restaurants

with orange-and-yellow decorations than in those decorated with cool colors?

Do shoppers buy more in stores that smell like cookies baking?

These questions are important to people concerned with marketing strategies...

To monitor the competition: Intelligent organizations keep track of what the competition is doing. This is done through surveys that ask consumers to comment on competing products and thereforere-shape its marketing and communication strategies to counter a competitor’s strengths and capitalize on its weaknesses.

The nature of research

On tv, newspaper the term “research” is always mentioned– Findings of a recent poll of people’s opinions

referring to the way which the data were collected– Newspapers report the findings of market

research companies’ findings– Advertisers highlight the ‘results of research’

However, many of these everyday uses of the term ‘research’ are not the true meaning of the word...

Page 27: Research methodology concept

The nature of research

The ways in which the term is used wrongly:– Just collecting facts or information with no clear

purpose– Reassembling and reordering facts or information

without interpretation– As a term to get your product or idea noticed and

respected

Page 28: Research methodology concept

The nature of research

So, research should have a number of characteristics:– Data are collected systematically– Data are interpreted systematically– There is a clear purpose: to find things out

Page 29: Research methodology concept

The nature of research

We can define research as something that people undertake in order to find out things in a systematic way, thereby increasing their knowledge.

Systematic way: Research is based on logical relationships and not just beliefs

To find out things: Research should aim at; describing, explaining, criticising and analysing. Also, there are set of things to be found out; such as the answer to research question

Page 30: Research methodology concept

The nature of business and management research

Three things combine to make business and management a distinctive focus for research:

1. The way in which managers and researchers draw on knowledge developed by other disciplines

2. The fact that managers tend to be powerful and busy people. Therefore they are unlikely to allow research unless they can see personal or commercial advantages

3. The requirement for the research to have some practical consequence.

Page 31: Research methodology concept

The nature of business and management research

Business and management reseach not only needs to provide findings that advance knowledge and understanding, it also needs to address business issues and practical managerial problem.

The findings of business and management research might also contain practical implications

Page 32: Research methodology concept

The nature of business and management research

Management research is “transdisciplinary”. Using knowledge from a range of disciplines

enables management research to gain new insights that can not be obtained through all of these disciplines seperately.
