RESEARCH DESIGN

MEANING AND CHARACTERISTICS

Page 4: Research design

RESEARCH DESIGN Task of defining the research

problem is the preparation of the research project, popularly known as the “research design".

Decisions regarding what, where, when, how much, by what means concerning an inquiry or a research study constitute a research design.

Page 5: Research design

Research Design means the exact nature of the research work in a systematic manner.

According to Claire Selltiz (1962) “A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collection and analysis of data in a manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in procedure”.

MEANING OF RESEARCH DESIGN

Page 6: Research design

Research Design includes the structure of research work.

It constitutes a blue print for collection, measurements and analysis of data. As such research design includes an outline of what the researcher will do from writing the hypothesis to the final analysis of the data collected.

Page 7: Research design

In short, The research design contains :

A clear statement of the problem.

Procedures and Techniques to be used for data collection

Sample to be studied

Method to be used for the analysis of the data.

Page 8: Research design

• Three traditional categories of research design:• Exploratory• Descriptive• Causal

Types of Research Design

EXPLORATORY DESCRIPTIVE

Sampling Design Rigid DesignStatistical Design Probability Sampling Design

Observational Design Structured DesignOperational Design Advanced Decision Design

Pre- planned design for analysis

EXAMPLE……………….

Design of the studyPhase One

Selection of the variables in the studyFormulation of hypothesis

Phase Two

Construction and validation of required toolSelection of standard toolSelection of sample involved in the study

Phase three

Administration of the tool and collection of data

Analysis of the data by using suitable statistical procedure

Phase Four

Reporting the study

Page 10: Research design

It is a plan that specifies the source and types of data relevant to the research problem.

It is a strategy specifying the approach to be analyzing and gathering the data.

It also include the budget of time and cost.

CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH DESIGN

Page 11: Research design

It involves the mean of obtaining information.

It involves availability and skill of the researcher and his staff, if any.

It involves the objective and nature of the problem to be studied.

It encourages co-ordination and effective organization

Page 12: Research design

The research design is the master plan specifying the methods and procedures for collecting and analyzing the needed information. Research design provides the glue that holds the research project together .
