RENAULT Card: general information

Remote control RENAULT Card AThe card has two buttons, 1 and 2.

It allows:- the doors (inc. tailgate) and the

fuel filler flap to be locked orunlocked (see the followingpages);

- depending on the vehicle,automatic closure of windows andthe sunroof (see the Electricwindow with automatic closingand Sunroof sections in Section 3);

- operation of certain devices (e.g.:radio, electrically controlled seats,etc.);

- starting the engine (see theinformation on Starting the enginein Section 2).

- switching off the “external guidelighting” (refer to the section on“external lighting and signaling”in Section 1).

RENAULT Card in Hands-Freemode BThis card has three buttons, 1, 2 and 3.

It allows:- the doors (tailgate, boot) and fuel

filler flap to be locked or unlockedautomatically if required;

- the doors (inc. tailgate) and thefuel filler flap to be locked orunlocked intentionally (see thefollowing pages);

RENAULT Cards A and B aresupplied with a battery whichshould be replaced when the batteryindicator light 4 no longer lights up(see the RENAULT Card: batteryparagraph in Section 5)

Special note: on some vehicles, theRENAULT Card can record settingsselected by the card user for choiceof automatic air conditioningsettings, some radios, electrical seatadjustments (if stored), the positionof the door mirrors, etc. Wetherefore recommend that you keepthe same RENAULT Card at alltimes so that you can retrieve yourpersonal settings.

Remote control rangeThis varies according to theenvironment. It is therefore importantto take care when handling theRENAULT Card that you do notinadvertently lock or unlock thedoors.

Driver's responsibilityNever leave a child (or apet) alone in the vehiclewith the RENAULT Card

inserted in the reader or left insidethe passenger compartment. Theymight start the engine or operateelectrical equipment such as theelectric windows and there is arisk that they may trap part of theirbody (neck, arms, hands, etc.).Risk of serious injury.

Integral emergency key 5 orseparate emergency key 6(depending on vehicle)It is only for use in exceptionalcircumstances, it is used to lock andunlock the left-hand door when theRENAULT card is not functioningcorrectly:- vehicle located in a high

electromagnetic radiation zone;- use of devices using the same

frequency as the card;- wear on the RENAULT card

battery, discharged battery, etc.

For instructions on how to use theemergency key, see the section on“Locking/unlocking the doors”.Once you have entered the vehiclewith the emergency key, insert theRENAULT card into the cardreader in order to start the vehicle.

Replacement, need for anadditional RENAULT CardIf you lose your RENAULT Card orrequire another, you can obtain onefrom your Dealer.If a RENAULT Card is replaced, itwill be necessary to take thevehicle and all its RENAULT Cardsto your RENAULT Dealer toinitialise the system.You can use up to four RENAULTCards per vehicle.

Faulty RENAULT CardMake sure that the batteries arealways in good condition: theyhave a service life of approximatelytwo years.See the RENAULT Card: batteriesparagraph in Section 5.

REMOTE CONTROL RENAULT CARD: use

Unlocking the doorsPress unlocking button 1.The hazard warning lights flashonce to indicate that the doors havebeen unlocked.

Special note (for some countries):- only the driver's door is opened by

pressing button 1 once,- all the opening elements can be

opened by pressing button 1twice.

Locking the doorsPress locking button 2.The hazard warning lights flashtwice to indicate that the doors havebeen locked.- If a door is open or not closed

properly, the doors and tailgatewill not be locked and the hazardwarning lights will not flash.

- If one of the doors or the tailgate isopen or not closed properly, thehazard warning lights will notflash.

HANDS-FREE RENAULT CARD: use

Hands-Free modeUnlocking the doorsApproach your vehicle carryingyour RENAULT Card.As soon as you grip one of thehandles (doors or tailgate), the lockswill open automatically.The hazard warning lights flashonce to indicate that the doors havebeen unlocked.

Locking the doorsClose the doors and walk away fromthe vehicle carrying your RENAULTCard; the doors will lockautomatically.

Note: the locking distance for yourvehicle depends on the environment.The hazard warning lights flashtwice and the side repeaters light up(for approximately ten seconds) toindicate that the doors have beenlocked. A beep also sounds.You can select the beep from a list ofdifferent tones or you can cancel it;consult your RENAULT Dealer.

Never leave your vehiclewithout removing theRENAULT Card.

Operation in manual modeIf you wish, you can exit theHands-Free mode by pressingbutton 1 or 2; you will then be inmanual mode and the RENAULTCard can be used according to themethod described in the RemoteControl RENAULT Card: UseSection.

Returning to Hands-Free modeHands-Free mode returnsautomatically each time the vehicleignition is switched on.

Distance lighting functionThis can, for example, identify thevehicle from a distance whenparked in a car park.The side lights, codes, side mountedindicators and interior lights light upfor about 30 seconds when button 3 ispressed.

Note: pressing button 3 again for30 seconds causes the lights to go out.

DEADLOCKING

Deadlocking the doors and tailgate(for some countries)This allows you to lock the doorsand tailgate and to prevent thedoors from being unlocked with theinterior handles (for example, bybreaking the window and thentrying to open the door from theinside).

To activate deadlocking:- press button 2 twice briefly;- or press and hold button 2.The hazard warning lights flash fourtimes to indicate that the doors havebeen locked.

Special note: deadlocking is notpossible if the hazard warning lightsor the side lights are lit.

Special note on Hands-freemodeActivating the deadlocking functionexits hands-free mode.To unlock the doors, you must pressbutton 1 (refer to the “RENAULTCard in hands-free mode: use”section).Hands-Free mode returnsautomatically each time the vehicleignition is switched on.

Never use deadlocking ifsomeone is still insidethe vehicle.

Opening the doors from theoutsideOnce the doors have been unlockedusing the RENAULT Card, grasphandle 1 and pull it towards you toopen the door.

Lights on warning buzzerA warning buzzer will sound whena door is opened if you have left thelights switched on after switchingoff the ignition (to preventdischarge of the battery, etc.).

Child safetyVehicles fitted with switch 3 withintegral indicator lightPress switch 3 to prevent operationof the rear electric windows andopening of the rear doors.The indicator light built into theswitch lights up to confirm that thedoors are locked.

If there is a fault, you willhear a beep and theindicator light will notlight up.

Special noteThis function also inhibits the rearair conditioning controls (refer tothe information on Automatic airconditioning in Section 3).

Safety of rearoccupantsThe driver can inhibitthe operation of the rear

door electric windows bypressing switch 3, on the sidewith the icon.

Driver's responsibilityNever leave your vehiclewithout removing the RENAULTCard from inside and never leavea child (or a pet) unsupervised.With the card in the reader, itwould be possible to operate theelectric windows and there is arisk that the child may beseriously injured (by trappinghis or her neck, arm, hand, etc.).If something gets trapped,reverse the direction of travel assoon as possible by pressing onthe relevant switch.

Other casesMove lever 4 on each door andcheck from the inside that bothdoors are securely locked, toprevent the rear doors being openedfrom inside.

LOCKING/UNLOCKING THE DOORSLocking/unlocking the doorsfrom the outsideThis is done using the RENAULTCard; see the RENAULT Cardinformation in Section 1.In certain cases, the RENAULTCard may not work:- vehicle located in a high

electromagnetic radiation zone;- the use of equipment such as

mobile phones etc., which operateon the same frequency as the card.

- wear on the RENAULT cardbattery, discharged battery, etc.

It is possible:- to use the emergency key

(integrated into the card or,depending on the vehicle,separate) for the front left-handdoor;

- to manually lock each of the doors;- to use the interior

locking/unlocking door controlrefer to the information on Interiorlocking/unlocking door control inSection 1.

Using the integral emergency key 2Remove cover A from the frontleft-hand door (using the base of theemergency key) at notch 1.

Insert key 2 into the lock and lock orunlock the door.

Using the separate emergencykey 3 (depending on vehicle)Insert key 3 in the left-hand doorand lock or unlock the door.

Manual door lockingTurn screw 4 with the door open(using a tool such as a flat-headscrewdriver) and close the door.This means that the doors are thenlocked from the outside.It can then only be opened frominside the vehicle.

RAID (RENAULT ANTI-INTRUDER DEVICE)

Interior locking/unlocking switchSwitch 5 controls the doors, theboot and the fuel filler flapsimultaneously.If a door or the boot is open or notproperly closed, the doors or bootlock/unlock quickly.

Locking the doors or bootwithout the RENAULT CardWith the ignition switched off andthe front door open, press switch 5for five seconds.On closing the door all the doorsand windows will be locked.It will only be possible to unlock thevehicle from outside using theRENAULT Card.

Never leave your vehiclewith the RENAULT Cardinside.

Opening status indicator lightWhen the ignition is switched on,the integrated indicator light on theswitch tells you whether theopening panels are locked:- when the indicator light is lit, the

doors and boot are locked,- indicator light off, the door and

windows are unlocked;When you lock the doors, theindicator light remains lit forapproximately one minute thengoes out.

If you decide to keep thedoors locked when youare driving, rememberthat it may be more

difficult for those assisting youto gain access to your vehicle inthe event of an emergency.

RAID (RENAULT ANTI-INTRUDER DEVICE)You can decide to activate thisfunction if you wish.

To activate itWith the ignition on, press centraldoor locking button 1 on the lockingside (padlock side) forapproximately 5 seconds, until youhear the beep.

To deactivate itWith the ignition on, press centraldoor locking button 1 on theunlocking side (opposite the padlock)for approximately 5 seconds, untilyou hear the beep.

If you decide to keep thedoors locked when youare driving, rememberthat it may be more

difficult for those assisting youto gain access to your vehicle inthe event of an emergency.

Operating principleWhen the vehicle moves off, thesystem locks the doorsautomatically as soon as you reach aspeed of 6 mph (10 km/h).The door is unlocked:- by opening a front door (vehicle

stationary).Note: If a door is opened, it willautomatically be locked again whenthe vehicle reaches a speed ofapproximately 6 mph (10 km/h);

- by pressing door unlocking button 1.

FaultsIf you note a fault (no automaticlocking, indicator light incorporated inbutton 1 does not light up when thedoors are locked, etc.), first check thatthat all the doors are properly closed. Ifthey are closed correctly, consult yourRENAULT Dealer.

ENGINE IMMOBILISERThis prevents the vehicle beingdriven by anyone not in possessionof the vehicle's RENAULT Card.The vehicle is automaticallyprotected a few seconds after theengine is switched off.

Any unauthorised workcarried out on the engineimmobiliser (computers,wiring, etc.) could be

dangerous. It must be carried outby trained RENAULT networkpersonnel.

Operating principleAs soon as the system recognisesthat the card is present, theindicator light 1 lights upcontinuously for a few seconds andthen goes out.The vehicle has recognised the codeand the engine can be started.

If the vehicle does not recognise thecode, indicator light 1 and reader 2will flash continuously (rapidflashing) and the vehicle cannot bestarted.

Indicator lightsVehicle protection indicator lightA few seconds after the ignition hasbeen switched off, indicator light 1will flash continuously.

Indicator light to indicate that thesystem is not operating correctlyIf warning light 1 continues to flashor remains continuously lit whenthe card is present but notrecognised, this indicates anoperating fault in the system.If the Hands-Free RENAULT card isdamaged or not recognised, insert itinto card reader 2.

If the RENAULT Card is faulty(rapid flashing of indicator light 1and the card reader), use the secondRENAULT Card (supplied with thevehicle) if possible.Call your RENAULT Dealer whoalone is capable of repairing theimmobiliser system.

FRONT HEADRESTS

Headrest with tab 1To adjust the heightWhile sitting on the seat, pull theheadrest towards you and slide it upor down at the same time.Never lower the headrest so far thatit touches the seatback: notch 2(which acts as a stop) is the lowestpermitted height.

To remove the headrestWith the headrest in the upposition, press tab 1 to release it andpull it out.

To adjust the angle of the headrestMove front Section A of theheadrest forwards or backwardsuntil it feels comfortable.

To refit the headrestInsert the rods into the sleeves withthe notches facing the front.Lower the headrest until it locks inposition.

The headrest is importantfor safety. Ensure that it isin place and in the correctposition. The distance

between your head and theheadrest should be as small aspossible. The top of your headshould be in line with the top of theheadrest.

FRONT SEATS WITH MANUAL ADJUSTMENT

To move forwards or backwardsLift lever 1 to unlock the seat.Release the lever in the requiredposition and ensure that the seat islocked in place.To tilt the seatbackRaise lever 4 and tilt the seatbackuntil it is in the required position.

To adjust the lumbar support of thedriver’s seatPull handle 2.

To adjust the height of the driver’sseat:Move lever 3 as many times asnecessary:- upwards to raise the seat;- downwards to lower the seat.

For safety reasons, carryout any adjustmentswhen the vehicle is notbeing driven.

We would advise you not torecline the seatbacks too farto ensure that theeffectiveness of the seat

belts is not reduced.Make sure the seatbacks are lockedin place correctly.Nothing should be placed on thefloor (area in front of driver) assuch objects may slide under thepedal during braking manoeuvres,thus obstructing its use.

FRONT SEATS WITH ELECTRIC ADJUSTMENTSwitches 1 and 3 recall the storedseat positions: switch 1 is used toadjust the seat cushion and switch 3is used to adjust the seatback.For vehicles fitted with button 2,this is used to store the chosendriving position. DRIVER'S SEAT POSITION MEMORYIt is possible to store a drivingposition using the RENAULT Card.A driving position groups togetherthe driver’s seat adjustments andthe door mirror adjustments.When a driving position is stored,the seat and door mirroradjustments linked to theRENAULT Card used areautomatically recalled when thedoors are unlocked and openedusing the RENAULT Card.

The system operates:- when the Hands-Free RENAULT

card is detected or, depending onthe vehicle, the remote controlRENAULT card is in theaccessories position in the cardreader;

- when opening the driver’s door,ignition switched off, forapproximately 40 minutes.

Armrest adjustmentsFor vehicles fitted with them, liftthe armrest up fully then lower it tothe desired height.

Removal/refitting of armrestsIt may sometimes be necessary toremove the armrests, on thosevehicles that are fitted with them:e.g. when you want to turn the frontseats (refer to the Turning the frontseats paragraph in Section 1).

Removal- position the armrest horizontally;- press the unlocking button 1 and

at the same time pull the armresttowards you to free it from theseat.

Refitting- position the armrest vertically (in

alignment with the seatback);- press down on the armrest and at

the same time fold it up.

With the ignition switched on, pressswitch 2. The indicator light in theswitch lights up.

TURNING THE FRONT SEATS

Depending on the vehicle, the frontseats can be turned and positionedforward-facing, which is theessential position for driving thevehicle, or rear-facing.

The rear-facing seatposition should only beused when the vehicle isstationary and the engine

not running.

Turning the seatmove back the seat as far as

possible;- adjust the cushion to the highest

position;- adjust the seatback so that it is

vertical;- take out armrest 1 (refer to the

Front armrests paragraph inSection 1);

- lift control 2 and turn the seatinwards;

- there are several positions, stop atthe desired position and checkthat it is properly locked.

Returning to the drivingposition- lift control 2 and turn the seat

inwards to the first position(facing the steering wheel);

- make sure that the seat is correctlylocked in position;

- refit the armrest.

SEAT BELTSAlways wear your seat belt whentravelling in your vehicle. You mustalso comply with the locallegislation of the particular countryyou are in.

Before driving off:- First ensure that your driving

position is correct.- Then adjust your seat belt to

provide maximum protection.

Incorrectly adjusted seatbelts may cause injuriesin the event of anaccident.

Even pregnant women shouldwear a seat belt. In this case,ensure that the pressure of thelap belt on the abdomen is notexcessive.

Adjusting your driving position• Sit well back in your seat (having

removed your coat or jacket, etc.).This is essential to ensure yourback is in the correct position.

• Adjust the distance between theseat and the pedals. Your seatshould be as far back as possiblefor you to be able to depress theclutch pedal fully. The seatbackshould be adjusted so that yourarms are slightly bent when youhold the steering wheel.

• Adjust the position of yourheadrest. For maximum safetyyour head should be as near aspossible to the headrest.The top of the head rest must be atthe height of the top of the head.

• Adjust the height of the seat. Thisadjustment allows you to selectthe seat position which offers youthe best possible vision.

• Adjust the position of the steeringwheel.

Adjusting the seat beltsSit with your back firmly against theseatback.Shoulder strap 1 should be as closeto the base of the neck as possiblebut not on it.Lap strap 2 should be worn firmlyover the thighs and against thepelvis.The belt should be worn so that it isas close to the body as possible, i.e.avoid wearing heavy clothing orkeeping bulky objects under thebelts.

SEAT BELTSThe following information applies to both the vehicle's front and rear seat belts.

• No modification may be made to the component parts of the restraint system (belts, seats and their mountings)originally fitted.For special applications (e.g. fitting child seats) consult your RENAULT Dealer.

• Do not use devices which give any play in the belts (e.g. clothes pegs, clips, etc.): a seat belt which is worn too looselyrisks causing injuries in the event of an accident.

• Never wear the shoulder strap under your arm or behind your back.

• Never use the same belt for more than one person and never hold a baby or child on your lap with your seat beltaround them.

• The belt should never be twisted.

• Seat belts should be replaced after a serious accident. Likewise, replace your seat belts as soon as they show any signsof wear.

• If necessary, readjust the position and tightness of the belt.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE SEAT BELTSThese are:■ buckle pretensioners,■ lap belt pretensioners in the

front seats,■ load limiters,■ driver's and passenger front

airbags.

These systems are designed to actindependently or together when thevehicle suffers a frontal impact.Depending on the force of theimpact the system may engage:- seat belt locking;- the buckle pretensioner (which

triggers to take up the seat beltplay);

- the lap belt pretensioner, lowvolume front airbag and the loadlimiter;

- the large volume front airbag.

PretensionersWith the ignition switched on, ifthere is a severe frontal impact anddepending on the force of theimpact, the system may engage:- piston 1 which immediately

retracts the seat belt;- piston 2.The pretensioners hold the seat beltagainst the body and thus increaseits efficiency.

• Have the entire restraintsystem checked after anaccident.

• No operation whatsoever ispermitted on any part of thesystem (pretensioners, airbags,computers, wiring) and thesystem components must not bere-used on any other vehicle,even if identical.

• To avoid incorrect triggering ofthe system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULTNetwork personnel may work onthe pretensioner and airbagsystem.

• Testing of the electric triggersystem may only be carried outby a specially trained technicianusing special equipment.

• When the vehicle is scrapped,contact your RENAULT Dealerfor disposal of the pretensionerand airbag gas generators.

Driver’s airbag A and passengerairbag BAn airbag may be provided for boththe driver and the front passenger.A marking “Airbag” on the steeringwheel, the dashboard and the lowersection of the windscreen remindsyou of the presence of theadditional means of restraint(airbags, pretensioners, etc.) in thepassenger compartment.

Each airbag system consists of:- An airbag and gas generator fitted

on the steering wheel for thedriver and in the dashboard for thefront passenger.

- A computer for both systems,which includes the impact sensorand a monitor controlling theelectrical trigger system for the gasgenerator.

- A single warning light onthe instrument panel.

The airbag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Thisexplains why, when the airbaginflates, it will generate heat,produce smoke (this does notmean that a fire is about to start)and make a noise upontriggering. In a situation wherean airbag is required, it willinflate immediately and this maycause some minor, superficialgrazing to the skin.

OperationThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.If a severe frontal impact occurs, theairbag(s) inflate(s) rapidly, cushioningthe impact of the driver's head andchest against the steering wheel andthe front passenger's head against thedashboard. The airbag then deflatesimmediately so that the passengersare not impeded in any way whenthey get out of the vehicle.

Special feature of the frontairbagThe airbag can be triggered in twodifferent ways, depending on theforce of the impact:- “small volume” airbag, this is the

first degree of operation;- “large volume” airbag, the airbag

seams rip so that a larger volumeof gas is released into the bag (forthe most severe impacts).

Operating faultsThis indicator light on theinstrument panel lights upwhen the ignition is turned

on and then goes out after a fewseconds.If it does not light up when theignition is switched on, or lights upwhen the engine is running, there isa fault in the system.Consult your RENAULT Dealer assoon as possible. Your protectionwill be reduced until this problemis rectified.

All the following warnings aregiven so that the airbag is notobstructed in any way when it isinflated and also to prevent the riskof serious injuries caused by itemswhich may be dislodged when theairbag inflates.

Warnings concerning the driver’s airbag• Do not modify the steering wheel, or the cushion.

• Do not cover the steering wheel cushion.

• Do not attach any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to thesteering wheel cushion.

• The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnelfrom the RENAULT network).

• Do not sit too close to the steering wheel. If you sit with your arms slightlybent (see the information on Adjusting your driving position in Section 1),it will ensure that there is sufficient space for the airbag to inflate properlyand to be fully effective.

Warnings concerning the passenger airbag:• Do not attach or affix with adhesive any objects (badge, logo, clock,

telephone holder, etc.) to the dashboard near where the airbag is located A.

• Nothing should be placed between the dashboard and the passenger (pet,umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).

• The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as thereis a risk that serious injuries may be sustained. As a general rule, keep allparts of the body (knees, hands, head, etc.) well away from the dashboard.

IT IS FORBIDDEN TO FIT A REAR-FACING CHILD SEAT ON THE FRONTPASSENGER SEAT UNLESS THE ADDITIONAL PROTECTION SYSTEMS

HAVE BEEN DEACTIVATED.(Refer to the information on child safety and the deactivation

LATERAL RESTRAINT SYSTEMS

Lateral airbags AThey are fitted to the front seats and,depending on the vehicle, the reardoor panels for the first rear row ofseats. They are triggered at the sideof the seats (door side) to protect theoccupants in the event of a severeside impact.

The airbag operatesthrough the slits in theseatbacks (door side):never put any objects in

the slits.

Curtain airbags BThey are fitted on both upper sidesof the vehicle. They are triggeredalong the length of the front and rearside window and the rear fixedwindow to protect the occupants inthe event of a violent side impact.

A marking on the windowscreeninforms you of the presence ofadditional means of restraint(airbags, pretensioners, etc) inthe passenger compartment.

Lateral and curtain airbagwarning• Fitting seat covers: seats

equipped with an airbagrequire special coversspecifically designed for yourvehicle. Consult your RENAULTDealer to find out if these coversmay be purchased fromRENAULT outlets. The use ofany covers other than thosedesigned for your vehicle (andincluding those designed foranother vehicle) may affect theoperation of the airbags andreduce your protection.

• Do not place any accessories,objects or even pets between theseat back, the door and theinternal fittings. This mayprevent the airbag fromoperating correctly or causeinjury if the airbag is deployed.

• No work or modificationwhatsoever may be carried outon the internal fittings, except byqualified RENAULT Networkpersonnel.

ADDITIONAL RESTRAINT SYSTEMSAll the following warnings are given so that the airbag is not obstructed in any way when it is inflated and also to preventthe risk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the airbag inflates.

The airbag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the airbags and seat belts are integral partsof the same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear the seat belt at all times. If seat belts are not worn,the occupants of the vehicle are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. The risk ofminor superficial injuries occurring when the airbag is deployed may also increase, although such minorinjuries are always possible with airbags.

If the vehicle should overturn or in the event of a rear impact, however severe, the pretensioners and airbags are notalways triggered.

• No operations or modifications whatsoever are permitted on any part of the airbag system (computer, wiring, etc.)(such work must be carried out by qualified RENAULT Network personnel).

• To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid accidental triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULT Network personnel may work on the airbag system.

• As a safety precaution, have the airbag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, is stolen orbroken into.

• When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the vehicle.

• When scrapping your vehicle, contact your RENAULT Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

CHILD SAFETYIn all countries there are regulationsgoverning the use of restraintsystems for children and babies.In Europe children under 10 yearsof age(1) must be seated in anapproved safety device which issuitable for the weight and size ofthe child.The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.Child restraints approved afterJanuary 1992 offer a level of safetymuch greater than for restraintswith approval before that date.We therefore advise you to select anapproved child restraint thatcomplies with European regulationECE 44.Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichstands for the country where it is anapproved type) and the year inwhich the type approval wasgranted.

Remember that an impact at 30 mph(50 km/h) is the same as fallingfrom a height of 10 metres.Expressed in other terms,transporting a child without arestraint is the equivalent ofallowing him or her to play on athird-floor balcony which does nothave any railings.

Under no circumstancesshould babies or childrenbe allowed to travel sittingon the knees of another

passenger in the vehicle.If a head-on impact occurs at 30 mph(50 km/h) a child weighing 30 kgwill be transformed into a missileequivalent to one tonne: you willfind it impossible to hold the child,even if you yourself are wearing abelt.It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your lap. Neveruse the belt for more than oneperson at the same time.

The table on the following pageshows you the types of child seatthat can be fitted in each of the seatpositions on the vehicle inaccordance with the Europeandirective.

Before installing a child seat in thefront seat (if installation ispermitted)If the passenger seat is so equipped,carry out the following adjustments:- move the passenger seat as far

back as possible;- set the seatback to its fully upright

position;- raise the seat squab as far as

possible;- raise the headrest to its highest

The right choiceThe safety of your children is alsoyour responsibility.To ensure that your child has themaximum possible protection, werecommend that you use seatsapproved by the RENAULTNetwork.It is preferable to use an Isofix seat ifyour vehicle is fitted with an Isofixsystem (refer to the information inSection 1 on the Isofix child seatfitting system).Restraint systems for all thecategories are available. Thesesystems have been developed inconsultation with themanufacturers and have been testedin RENAULT vehicles.Consult your RENAULT Dealer andask him to help you install it.

0 and 0+ (0 to 13 kg) categoriesA child's neck is very susceptible toinjury up to the age of two. In afront-facing seat there is a risk thatthe child will sustain neck injuriesin the event of a frontal impact.RENAULT therefore recommends arear-facing seat with a harness thatgives all-round protection (figure 1).

Category 1 (9 to 18 kgs) (20 to 40 lbs)Between the ages of 2 and 4, achild's pelvis is not fully developed.Restraints using the vehicle'sthree-point belts are not adequateand there is a risk that the child willsustain abdominal injuries in theevent of a frontal impact. It istherefore advisable to userear-facing seats (figure 1),bucket-type seats (figure 2) or seatswith harnesses.Place the headrest in the topposition to allow you to press theseatback of the child seat firmlyagainst the vehicle seatback.

To avoid any risk to your safety, we recommend that you useRENAULT approved accessories because they are suitable for yourcar and are the only accessories for which RENAULT will provide awarranty.

Category 2 (15 to 25 kg) andcategory 3 (22 to 36 kg)To correctly restrain the pelvis of achild up to 10 years, it is preferableto use seats that can be combinedwith the three-point seat belts(figure 3) with belt guides so that thevehicle's three-point belt lies flatacross the child's thighs.

A booster seat with aheight-adjustable seatback and abelt guide are recommended as thiswill allow the belt to be worn asclose to the base of the neck aspossible but not on it.Place the headrest in the topposition to allow you to press theseatback of the child seat firmlyagainst the vehicle seatback.If a booster seat without a seatback isused, the vehicle's headrest willhave to be adjusted to suit thechild's stature; the upper edge of thehead rest must be at the same heightas the top of the child's head andshould never be lower than in linewith the child's eyes.

Isofix - mounting system forchild seatsThis is a new procedure forinstalling a child seat. It can be usedon the rear lateral seat positions ofthe vehicle.For information on fitting positions,refer to the Types of child seats thatcan be fitted to different places inthe vehicle table at the beginning ofthe Child safety section.The system consists of:- two anchoring rings located

between the cushion and theseatback to attach the base of thechild seat;

CHILD SAFETY• No modifications may be made to the component parts of the restraint system (belts and seats and their

mountings) originally fitted.

• Carefully follow the instructions for fitting provided by the manufacturer of the restraint system.

• Always avoid dressing the child in bulky garments and do not place any objects between the child and the restraintsystem.

• The seat belt in the vehicle must be tight enough so that the child's seat is held in position securely. Check the tensionregularly.

• Never wear the belt under your arm or behind your back.

• The harness or belt should be taut and fitted to suit the child's size.

• Never allow your child to stand up or kneel on the seats while the vehicle is moving.

• Check that the child is in the correct position for the entire journey, particularly when they are asleep.

• Use the seat belts to hold the seat in position, even if it is not occupied. Otherwise, if an accident were to occur, it maybecome dislodged and pose a risk to other vehicle occupants.

• Following a serious accident, check the seat belts, the Isofix seat mounting and replace the child seat(s).

• Never leave a child unsupervised in a vehicle, even if they are in a restraint device.

• Activate the rear door locks (if your vehicle is equipped with these).

• Make sure the child does not get out of the vehicle at the side where there is traffic.

• Set your children a good example - always wear your seat belt.

Electronic Stability Program(ESP) and traction controlindicator light

There are several reasons for thewarning light coming on: seeSection 2 for information on theElectronic Stability Program: ESPand the traction control system.

Anti-lock braking systemwarning light (ABS).This lights up when the

ignition is switched on and thengoes out. If it lights up when you aredriving, it indicates a fault in theanti-lock braking system.Braking will then occur normally,without the ABS system. Consultyour RENAULT Dealer as soon aspossible.

Turning right directionindicator light

Battery charge warninglightIf it lights up when you are

driving, it indicates that the circuitis overcharging or has discharged.Stop and have the circuit checked.

Coolant temperature and engineoil level indicatorAfter the ignition has been switchedon, display 1 shows the coolanttemperature if the engine oil level iscorrect. The number of squares 2 litdepends on the engine coolanttemperature.

Under conditions of severe use,they may all light up momentarily,there is only a warning if the topsquare and the STOP warning lightcome on.

Engine oil levelThe vehicle must be parked on levelground and the engine should havebeen switched off for some time toobtain an accurate level reading.- if the level is correct,

display 1 shows “oil ok”.If you want to see the level, pressthe button at the end of handle 4.Bar 3 shows the maximum level ofoil and the squares 2 show theactual level: they disappear as thelevel descends;

on the metal valve and continue toinsert it as far as it will go.

- Keep the nozzle in this positionthroughout the entire fillingoperation.

Petrol and diesel versionsNo more than two filling operationsmay be made after the fuel feed hasswitched off automatically for thefirst time because there must besufficient space in the fuel tank toallow for expansion.

Persistent fuel odourIf you notice a persistent fuel odouryou should:•stop the vehicle if traffic

conditions allow and switch offthe ignition;

•switch on the hazard warninglights and ask your passengers toleave the vehicle and stay clear ofthe traffic;

•Do not operate on, or restart, thevehicle before it has beeninspected by qualified staff fromthe RENAULT network.

No operations whatsoeverare permitted on any partof the fuel supply system(computers, wiring, fuel

When the door is opened, theRENAULT Card reader 1 lights up.Insert the RENAULT Card in thecard reader 1 which has twonotches: the first is the accessoriesposition and the second is thestarting the engine position. Forvehicles fitted with a card reader,the insert card message will appearon the instrument panelinformation display.

Accessories position(First notch)The accessories (radio, etc.) operatewhen the engine is not running.

Starting the engine position(Second notch)Once the RENAULT Card is fullyinserted in the card reader 1 (whenyou hear the unlocking noise fromthe steering column), button 2 lightsup to confirm authorisation to startthe engine: press briefly on button 2to start. Indicator light A lights up toconfirm that the engine is running.

Note: button 2 cannot be operated ifyou are not in a position to start (forexample: diesel preheating, gearselected, etc.).

Special circumstanceIn some cases it will be necessary tomove the steering wheel whilepressing button 2 to unlock thesteering column.

Stopping the engineOnce the vehicle is stationary, pressbriefly on button 2: the ignition isswitched off and the engine runningindicator light A goes out.For some vehicles with automaticgearboxes, you must return the leverto park position P.Remove the card from card reader 1.When you remove the card from thecard reader, the courtesy lights willlight up (if they are set to automaticlighting), the steering column willlock and the accessories will switchoff.

Note: a beep will let you know ifyou have left the card in the readerwhen you open the driver's door,and the card reader will also flash.

If there is a child (or a pet)in the vehicle, never leaveit unsupervised with theRENAULT Card left in the

card reader or passengercompartment. They might start theengine or operate electricalequipment such as the electricwindows and there is a risk that thechild may be injured (by trappingtheir neck, arm, hand, etc.). button 1;or- put the gear selector lever in

neutral (vehicle with a manualgearbox) or in position P or N(vehicle with an automaticgearbox), fully depress the brakepedal and press button 1;

Stopping the engineWhen the vehicle is stationary,press button 1, if accessories such asthe radio are in use, they willcontinue to work.When the driver's door is opened,the accessories stop working andthe steering column locks.

If there is a child (or apet) in the vehicle, neverleave it unsupervisedwith the RENAULT Card

left in the card reader orpassenger compartment. Theymight start the engine or operateelectrical equipment such as theelectric windows and there is arisk that the child may be injured(by trapping their neck, arm,hand, etc.). Risk of serious injury.Never switch off the ignitionbefore the vehicle has stoppedcompletely. Once the engine hasstopped, the power assistedsteering, brake servo and thepassive safety devices such asairbags and pretensioners will nolonger operate.

- When the engine is running, thedoors of the vehicle closed and thecard outside the vehicle (forexample when a passenger has gotout of the car with the RENAULTCard still on him): the message“card outside the vehicle” comesup on the instrument panel, thewarning light flashes on theemergency card reader 3 and ableep sounds as soon as thevehicle restarts to warn you.

- RENAULT Card operation may beaffected by interference fromnearby instruments, such asexterior installations orequipment operating on the samefrequency as the RENAULT Card.

Hands-Free mode operatingfaultWarning light 2 and card reader 3flash.

SPECIAL NOTES FOR PETROL VERSIONSThe following operating conditions:• Driving for a long time with the

low fuel level warning lightilluminated,

• Using leaded petrol,• Using oil or fuel additives which

are not approved by RENAULT,

or operating faults such as:• Faulty ignition, running out of

fuel or spark plug disconnectedindicated by the engine misfiringand jolting when driving,

• Loss of power,

may cause the catalytic converter tooverheat and thus reduce itsefficiency or even destroy it andcause heat damage to the vehicle.

If you notice any of the above faults,have the necessary repairs carriedout as soon as possible by yourRENAULT Dealer.

These faults may be avoided bytaking your vehicle regularly toyour RENAULT Dealer at theintervals specified in your Servicingbooklet.

Starting problemsTo avoid damaging the catalyticconverter, do not keep trying tostart the engine (using the startbutton, or by pushing or towing thevehicle) without having identifiedand corrected the starting fault.If the fault cannot be identified, donot persist in attempting to start theengine but call a RENAULT Dealer.

Do not park the vehicle orrun the engine in locationswhere combustiblesubstances or materials

such as grass or leaves can comeinto contact with a hot exhaustsystem.

SPECIAL NOTES FOR DCI (DIESEL) VERSIONSDiesel engine speedDiesel engines are fitted withinjection equipment whichprevents overrevving of the engineirrespective of the gear in use.

Running out of fuelAfter filling the tank when you havecompletely run out of fuel, theengine may be started normally oncondition that the battery is fullycharged: see the information on thefuel tank in Section 1 to find outmore about the special features ofdCi versions fitted with commonrail (high-pressure) injection.However, if after a few seconds andseveral attempts the engine fails tostart, contact a RENAULT Dealer.

Precautions to be taken inwinterTo avoid any damage in icy weather:• Ensure that the battery is always

fully charged.• Always keep the fuel tank

relatively full to avoid watervapour condensing in it andaccumulating at the bottom of thetank.

Do not park the vehicle orrun the engine in locationswhere combustiblesubstances or materials

such as grass or leaves can comeinto contact with a hot exhaustsystem.

AUTOMATIC PARKING BRAKE

Automatic operationThe parking brake automaticallyimmobilises the vehicle when theengine is switched off.Parking brake indicator light 1lights up for approximately 30seconds.The brake will be releasedautomatically as soon as the vehiclestarts and accelerates.The parking brake cannot beapplied automatically in certaincountries. Refer to the informationon manual operation.

Manual operationTo engage the parking brakePull out and release handle 2.Warning lights 1 and 4 light up.

To release the parking brake:Pull handle 2 while pressing releasebutton 3 and release the controls.Indicator lights 1 and 4 go out, theautomatic parking brake off messageappears on the information display(depending on the vehicle) and thevehicle can be driven.

Temporary stopIn all cases, the parking brake can beapplied manually, for examplewhen stopped at a red light or on aslope.To do this, pull out and releasehandle 2. The brake will be releasedautomatically as soon as the vehicleis started up again.

Specific case:If you have to park on a slope whenthe vehicle is towing a caravan or atrailer, keep handle 2 pulled out fora few seconds to obtain maximumbraking.

Automatic gearbox versionsDo not leave your vehicle withoutsetting the selector lever to N or P.For security reasons, the automaticrelease function is deactivated forother positions, if the driver's dooris open or not properly closed.

Operating faults• If there is a fault, a warning

message appears on theinformation display (according tothe vehicle) and warning lights 1and 5 flash continuously inaccordance with the faults.

• If the parking brake cannot beused, warning light 4 will flashfor approximately 10 secondswhen the engine is started andthen go out.Every time handle 1 is operatedand every time the engine isswitched off, indicator lights 1and 4 will flash for approximately10 seconds.

Consult your RENAULT Dealer assoon as possible.

Emergency release(battery fault or systemunavailable).To release the parking brake: liftcover 7 and pull the handle 6 untilyou hear the unlocking sound.This control cannot be used toreapply the parking brake.The system will be operational as ofthe first manual brake releasecommand after the battery has beenreplaced.

Never leave your vehiclewith the RENAULT card inthe reader or in thepassenger compartment

when there is a child (or an animal)in the vehicle as the child oranimal could release the parkingbrake and accidentally set thevehicle in motion.

Your vehicle has been designedwith the aim of caring for theenvironment.• The majority of versions are

equipped with a depollutionsystem including a catalyticconverter, a lambda sensor andan active carbon filter. (Theactive carbon filter preventsvapour from the petrol tank beingreleased into the open air.)

• RENAULT has used all itsrecycling expertise to reduceenvironmental impact as far aspossible at the end of the servicelife of your vehicle.

• Your vehicle is made up of 90 %recyclable components ormaterials and contains manycomponents made from recycledplastics or textiles. All the plasticcomponents have been marked tomake it easier to identify them forrecycling.

• To help protect the environment,the paint and brake pads on yourvehicle are lead-free and do notcontain cadmium. We have alsoreduced the quantity of chlorinein relation to previous models.

Make your contribution towardsprotection of the environment too.Do not dispose of parts which areworn or replaced in the course ofroutine vehicle maintenance(battery, oil filter, air filter, etc.) andoil containers (empty or full of usedoil, etc.) with household waste.Dispose of them through specialistorganisations. TYRE PRESSURE MONITORThis system continuously monitorsthe tyre pressures.

The tyre pressures can be adjustedwhen cold (refer to the Tyreinflation pressure information forthe values).If the tyre pressures cannot bechecked when the tyres are cold,assume an increase of 0.2 to 0.3 bar(3 PSI).

Never deflate a hot tyre.

This function is anadditional driving aid.However, the functiondoes not take the place of

the driver. It cannot, therefore,under any circumstances replacethe vigilance or theresponsibility of the driver.Check the tyre pressures,including the emergency sparewheel, once a month.

Operating principleEach wheel (except the emergencyspare wheel) has a sensor integratedin the inflation valve whichperiodically measures the tyrepressure.The driver is continuouslyinformed of the correct tyrepressure and possible variations viathe computer A and warning light Bon the instrument panel.

On some vehicles, the informationdisplay C also gives details of thenature of the fault detected.

Emergency spare wheelThe emergency spare wheel doesnot have a sensor and so cannot bedetected by the system.When it is fitted in the place ofanother wheel, the system detects afault.

Replacing wheels/rims, etc.This system requires specificallydeveloped equipment (wheels,wheel trims, etc.).Consult your RENAULT Dealer tofind out about accessoriescompatible with the system andwhich may be purchased fromRENAULT outlets: the use of anyother accessory could affect thecorrect operation of the system.

Tyre repair aerosolsBecause the wheels are speciallydesigned, only aerosols approvedby RENAULT's TechnicalDepartment may be used.

DisplayThe warning lights:

inform you of the faults detected bythe system (deflated tyre, burst tyre,system out of order, etc.).The following pages show thebreakdown of the various warninglights and the different ways inwhich they light up.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM: ABSUnder heavy braking, the twoprinciple aims are to reduce thestopping distance and keep yourvehicle under control. However,there is a risk that roadholding anddirectional control may be lost andthe wheels may lock when braking,depending on the nature of theground, weather conditions andyour reactions. The Anti-lockBraking System (ABS) has beendesigned to combat this danger.

The safety enhancement is that thebrake control system prevents thewheels from locking, even if thebrakes are applied too sharply, andallows the vehicle to be steered andthus its direction to be controlled.Under these circumstances it isquite possible for the driver to steerthe vehicle and to avoid an obstaclewhilst at the same time applying thebrake.

Also, this system allows you tooptimise stopping distances whenone or more wheels is in danger oflosing grip (wet roads, slippery orvarying road surfaces).Although this system allows you tomake maximum use of stoppingdistances, even with the ABS youstill have to take account of theactual condition of the road surface.It is still essential to follow the rulesof good driving practice (such asdriving at a safe distance from thevehicle in front). The fact that thevehicle’s safety has been increasedshould not encourage you to takerisks.

You will feel pulsing through thebrake pedal when the system hasbeen activated. These tangible signswill warn you that the adhesionbetween the tyres and the groundhas reached its limit and enable youto adapt your driving style to suitthe road conditions.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM: ABS (continued)

If the ABS system is faulty, twopossible situations may occur:

1 - The orange warning

light lights up on the instrumentpanel.Braking is still assured, butwithout the ABS system.Consult a RENAULT Dealer assoon as possible.

2 - The orange

warning light and the

red brake circuit fault

indicator light on the instrumentpanel light up.This indicates that both thebraking system and the ABSsystem are faulty. Your vehiclebrakes may still partiallyoperate. However, it isdangerous to brake suddenlyand it is essential to stopimmediately, as soon as trafficconditions allow. Contact yourRENAULT Dealer as soon aspossible.

Furthermore, for those vehicles thatare fitted with it, the ABS faultmessage appears on display A.

The braking modulationprovided by the anti-lockbraking system is independent ofthe effort applied to the brakepedal. In an emergency, applyfirm and continuous pressure tothe brake pedal - there is no needto pump it repeatedly.

EMERGENCY BRAKE ASSISTThis is an additional system to ABSwhich helps reduce vehiclestopping distances.

Operating principleThe system allows an emergencybraking situation to be detected viaa sensor that measures the speedwith which the brake pedal isdepressed. If this happens, thebraking assistance reachesmaximum power instantly.ABS braking is maintained as longas the brake pedal is not released.

Hazard warning lights come onThese may light up in the event ofrapid deceleration.If this happen, you can extinguishthem by pressing twice on the“hazard warning switch”.

PARKING PROXIMITY SENSOROperating principleProximity sensors located in therear bumper measure the distancebetween the vehicle and an obstaclewhen reversing.This measurement is indicated bybeeps which become more frequentthe closer you are to the vehicle,until they become one continuousbeep when the obstacle isapproximately 25 centimetres fromthe vehicle.

Note: make sure that the proximitysensors are not blocked (dirt, mud,snow, etc.).

FaultsWhen the system detects a fault abeep sounds for 5 seconds as awarning when reverse gear isselected. Consult your RENAULTDealer.

This function is anadditional aid whichindicates, by means ofaudible signals, the

distance between the vehicle andan obstacle when reversing.Under no circumstances should itreplace vigilance and responsibilityon the part of the driver whenreversing.The driver should always payattention to sudden events whichmay occur when driving: alwaysensure that there are no movingobstacles, such as a child, animal,pram or bicycle, etc., or small,narrow objects such as stones orbollards, in your path whenmanoeuvring.

Special circumstances- If the bends and hills on the road

do not allow you to stay inautomatic mode (e.g.: inmountains), it is recommendedthat you change to manual mode.This will prevent the automaticgearbox changing gearssuccessively when climbing, andpermit engine braking on longdescents.

- In cold weather, start the engineand wait a few seconds beforemoving the selector lever fromposition P or N and engaging it inD or R to prevent the enginestalling.

- Vehicles not fitted with tractioncontrol: on a slippery or lowadhesion surface, change tomanual mode and select secondgear (or even third) before startingthe engine to avoid wheelspinwhen starting.

Stopping the vehicleWhen the vehicle is stationary,move the lever to position P whilekeeping your foot on the brakepedal: the gearbox is in neutral andthe drive wheels are mechanicallylocked by the transmission.Check that the automatic parkingbrake is properly engaged (refer tothe Automatic parking brakeinformation in Section 2).

Operating faultsIf the lever is stuck on P, eventhough you are pressing on thebrake pedal, the lever can bereleased manually. To do this, undothe upper section of gaiter 3.Press the button located underneaththe gaiter and at the same time pressunlocking button 2 to move thelever from position P.

When driving, if thiswarning light comes on or ifthe display of the gear

engaged flashes on the instrumentpanel, this indicates a fault. Consulta RENAULT Dealer as soon aspossible. Furthermore, for thosevehicles that are fitted with it, anadditional message appears ondisplay B.

Adjusting the air temperatureSliders 5 and 12 are used to adjustthe air temperature in the passengercompartment. The higher up theslider is positioned, the higher theair temperature.

There are two modes of use:- operating indicators 3 and 11 are

off.Slider 5 on the driver’s sideadjusts the temperature of thewhole passenger compartment(slider 12 on the passenger sidehas no effect in this case);

- operating indicators 3 and 11 areon.Slider 5 adjusts the airtemperature on the driver’s sideand slider 12 adjusts the airtemperature on the passenger side.

If you are a passenger and want adifferent air temperature adjustmentfrom the driver, press button 10:operating indicators 3 and 11 come onand you can then adjust thetemperature using slider 12.

There are two options to return towhole passenger compartment airtemperature adjustment:- on the driver’s side, press one of

the air distribution buttons 1 or 8for about two seconds;

- on the passenger side, pressbutton 10 again.

Indicator lights 3 and 11 go off.

Note:- Each time the ignition is switched

on, the temperature adjustmentreturns to whole passengercompartment: indicators 3 and 11are off.

- Slider 12 cannot be activated if theSee clear function (button 2) isoperating. In this event, indicatorlights 3 and 11 go out.

This is the recommended usage:indeed, the automatic climatecontrol system guarantees comfortin the passenger compartment andgood visibility (except in the eventof extreme use).

the left or right.

There are two ways for the driver toadjust the comfort level in thewhole passenger compartment:- after the ignition has been turned

off for at least 20 minutes;- by pressing and holding AUTO

button 1 until indicator light 1aflashes, even if it is already lit.

Note: the temperature displayed onthe passenger side is the same asthat displayed on the driver’s side.

Special noteThe RENAULT Card stores thesettings selected by the driver. Wetherefore recommend that you keepthe same RENAULT Card so thatyou can reuse your personalsettings.

The values displayed are the airtemperature setting.When the vehicle is started in coldor hot weather, increasing ordecreasing the values displayeddoes not mean that the temperatureis reached more quickly (the systemoptimises the temperature increaseor decrease irrespective of the airtemperature indicated).Generally speaking, the air ventsmay remain open without causingdiscomfort whatever the weather.

Ventilation speed adjustment inthe rear seats (depending onvehicle)Controls located in each rear doorenable the ventilation speed of theair vents to be adjusted for the rearpassengers.Indicator 15a, made up ofilluminated lines, shows thedesired ventilation speed.Press button 17 to increaseventilation speed.Press button 16 to decreaseventilation speed.

To inhibit air to the air vents in therear seats, press button 16 until thelast line on indicator 15adisappears.There are two ways of returning tonormal ventilation speed(minimum speed setting defined bythe system) in the rear seats:- after switching off the ignition;- by and holding AUTO button 1

until indicator light 1a flashes,(even if it is already lit).

Special noteDepending on the vehicle, when theChild safety switch is activated(indicator light lit on switch), therear air conditioning controls areinhibited. The last red line onindicator 15a lights up and the rearventilation speed matches theminimum setting defined by thesystem.

Conditions of useIn some cases (such as when thepassenger compartment is very hot),if the last red line is lit on indicator15a, it means that it is not possibleto further increase the ventilationspeed. It will become possible againas soon as the red line goes out.

Air recirculation (isolating thepassenger compartment)Climate control uses air from theoutside to cool or heat the passengercompartment.However, when the recirculationfunction is in use, it is possible toisolate the passenger compartmentfrom the atmosphere outside, suchas when driving in polluted areas.

Note:The automatic recirculationfunction is activated by pressingAUTO button 1 (light 2a lit).

Press successively on button 2 toselect:- automatic recirculation;- enforced recirculation;- exterior air.

Automatic recirculationLight 2a lights up. The systemanalyses the quality of the exterior airand, when necessary, seals thepassenger compartment automatically.

Enforced recirculationLight 2b lights up. The air is drawnfrom the passenger compartmentand recycled without admitting airfrom outside.

If no cool air is producedCheck that the controls are setcorrectly and that the fuses aresound. Otherwise switch off the airconditioning and call for theassistance of a RENAULT Dealer.Do not open the refrigerant fluidcircuit.

Fuel consumptionWhen the air conditioning isoperating, you will normally noticean increase in fuel consumption(especially when driving in anurban area).

Operating faultsIf you notice a reduced efficiencyin the de-icing, demisting or airconditioning functions, this couldbe due to the cabin filter cartridgebeing clogged up.Generally, in the event of a fault,consult your RENAULT Dealer.

After prolonged use of the airconditioning, it is normal to notethe presence of water underneaththe vehicle, caused bycondensation.

Vehicles fitted with an auxiliaryheaterSome vehicles are fitted with anauxiliary heater which enables thepassenger compartment to beheated more quickly.This device only functions whenthe engine is running and in coldweather.When the device is functioning youcan normally see a small amount ofsmoke on the right-hand side of thevehicle coming from the heater'sexhaust system.

Driver's responsibilityNever leave your vehicle withoutremoving the RENAULT Card frominside and never leave a child (or apet) unsupervised. With the card inthe reader, it would be possible tooperate the electric windows andthere is a risk that the child may beseriously injured (by trapping hisor her neck, arm, hand, etc.). Ifsomething gets trapped, reverse thedirection of travel as soon aspossible by pressing on therelevant switch.

The one touch mode is an additionto the electric window operationdescribed above.If it is present on the vehicle, it isfitted to the driver's window only orall four windows.Press switches 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 or 7.

The system operates:- with the ignition on;- with the ignition off until one of

the front doors is opened/closed(limited to approximately20 minutes).

Safety of occupantsThe driver can disable the operation of the rear door electric windowsby pressing switch 4, on the side with the icon.

Driver's responsibilityNever leave your vehicle without removing the RENAULT Card from insideand never leave a child (or a pet) unsupervised. With the card in the reader, itwould be possible to operate the electric windows and there is a risk that thechild may be seriously injured (by trapping his or her neck, arm, hand, etc.).If something gets trapped, reverse the direction of travel as soon as possibleby pressing on the relevant switch.

Windscreen with reflectivelayersThis windscreen reflects the sunand, in particular, limits theinfrared rays entering the passengercompartment.There are two zones which allowelectronic passes to be affixed to thewindscreen (e.g.: motorwaypermits, car park season tickets,etc.), located on either side of therear-view mirror.

Lashing points

Always position theheaviest items directlyon the floor. Use thelashing points on the

luggage compartment floor toimmobilise them. The luggageshould be loaded in such a waythat no items will be thrownforward and strike the occupantsif the driver has to brakesuddenly. Fasten the rear seatbelts, even if the seats are notoccupied.

Storage positionFor aerodynamic reasons, the roofrack bars 1 should be positionedright at the rear of the vehicle.

Moving the barsLift lever 2 on each side towards theinside of the vehicle to release it(movement A).Slide bar 1 into the desired position.Push back lever 2 on each side toattach the bar (movement B). Checkthat the bonnet is correctly locked.

LoadingDistribute the load evenly and donot exceed the maximumpermissible weight as indicated oneach bar (refer to the Weightinformation in Section 6).Ensure that the objects and/oraccessories to be transported aresecure. Apertures 3 are for passing astrap through.The two bars should be far enoughapart to avoid any risk of tilting orlosing the load.

BONNET ENGINE OIL LEVEL

To open the bonnet, pull handle 1.

Take care when workingunder the bonnet as theengine cooling fan maycut in at any moment.

Closing the bonnetBefore closing the bonnet, check tomake sure that nothing has been leftin the engine compartment.

Check that the bonnet iscorrectly latched.

It is normal for an engine to use oilfor lubrication and cooling ofmoving parts and it is normal to topup the level between oil changes.However, consult your RENAULTDealer if more than 0.5 litres isbeing consumed every 620 miles(1000 km) after the running inperiod .

Oil change frequency: check the oillevel from time to time and alwaysbefore long journeys, to avoid therisk of damaging your engine.

Reading the oil levelThe vehicle must be parked on levelground and the engine should havebeen switched off for some timebeforehand to obtain an accuratereading.

The oil level can be read:- on the instrument panel;- on the dipstick.

Reading the level on the instrumentpanelWhen the ignition is switched on:- if the level is correct, the display

will show “oil OK”If you want to see the level, pressthe button at the end of handle 4.Bar 3 shows the maximum level ofoil and the squares 2 show theactual level: they disappear as thelevel descends.

- If the level is at the minimum, theword “oil” flashes and the displayshows the following cycle: all thesquares light up one by one thendisappear until the last one. Theythen light up again etc. TheSERVICE warning light comes onat the same time.Top up the level as soon aspossible.

Reading the oil level on the dipstick- take out the dipstick;- wipe the dipstick using a clean,

and industrial areas);- saline atmosphere (near the sea,

particularly in hot weather);- seasonal and damp climatic

conditions, (eg:road salt inwinter).

EMERGENCY SPARE WHEEL

Tool A made up of ratchet wrench2 and socket 1 must be used.These components are located inthe tool block in the tailgate (refer tothe information on Tool kit inSection 5).Check that the socket 1 is properlyattached to the ratchet wrench 2.The ratchet wrench has a directionfor tightening and one for loosening.Change the side when you reversethe procedure (tightening toloosening or vice versa).

Emergency spare wheel BIt is located under the vehicle.- Lift cover 3 in the tailgate;- remove the cover;- unscrew it using tool A, the

holding wire for the wheel movesand drops to the ground.

- stand the wheel up outside thevehicle;

Vehicle fitted with anemergency spare wheelwhich is smaller thanthe other four wheels

CHANGING A WHEEL

Park your vehicle on firm,level ground (if necessary,placing a solid supportunder the jack), switch on

the hazard lights.With the parking brake on, engage agear (first or reverse gear orposition P for automaticgearboxes).Ask all the passengers to leave thecar and keep away from the traffic.

Reconstitute wheelbrace 1 using thetools from the tool kit: refer to thetool kit information on thepreceding pages.Loosen the wheel bolts usingwheelbrace 1. Position and pressdown on it: check the direction offitting of the ratchet wrench (reversethe wrench fitting if it does notwork).Offer up the jack horizontally, thejack head must be positioned at theheight of the supporting metal 2provided in the lower section of thebodywork closest to the wheelconcerned.

Offer up jack 3 by hand at first toalign the base plate (which shouldbe inclined further inwards than thejack head). Place a plank of woodunder the base plate if on softground.

Turn the wheelbrace to lift thewheel off the ground.

Remove the bolts.

Take off the wheel.Install the emergency spare wheelon the central hub and turn it tolocate the mounting holes in thewheel and the hub.

Tighten the bolts and lower the jack.

With the wheels on the ground,tighten the bolts as far as possibleand check the tightness as soon aspossible (tightening torque130 Nm).

If you have a puncture,replace the wheel as soonas possible.

A tyre which has beenpunctured should always beinspected (and repaired ifpossible) by a specialist.

TYRESTyre safety - wheelsThe tyres are the only contactbetween the vehicle and the road, soit is essential to keep them in goodcondition.You must make sure that your tyresconform to local road regulations.

When they need to bereplaced, only tyres ofthe same make,dimension, type and

profile should be used.Tyres fitted to the vehicle shouldeither be identical to those fittedoriginally or conform to thoserecommended by yourRENAULT Dealer.

Tyre maintenanceThe tyres must be in good conditionand the tread form must havesufficient depth; tyres approved byRENAULT's Technical Departmenthave wear warning strips 1 whichare risers moulded into the tread atseveral points.

When the tread has worn down tothe level of these risers, theybecome visible 2: the tyresconcerned must then be replaced, asno more than 1.6 mm of treadremains, and this is not sufficient tomaintain a good grip on wet roads.Incidents which occur whendriving, such as striking the kerb,may damage the tyres and couldlead to misalignment of the frontaxle geometry.An overloaded vehicle, longjourneys by motorway, particularlyin very hot weather, or continualdriving on poorly surfaced minorroads will lead to more rapid tyrewear and affect safety.

Tyre pressuresRecommended tyre pressures mustbe adhered to. (Remember to checkthe emergency spare wheel at thesame time.) Pressures must bechecked at least once a month andalways before a long journey. (Referto the section on Tyre pressures.)

Incorrect tyre pressureslead to abnormal tyrewear and unusually hotrunning, factors which

may seriously affect safety andlead to:- poor roadholding;- the risk of blow-outs or of

throwing a tread at high speed.Tyre pressures depend on theload and the driving speed.Adjust the pressures accordingto the conditions of use. (Refer tothe tyre pressures section).

Pressures should be checked whenthe tyres are cold; ignore higherpressures which may be reached inhot weather or following a fastjourney.If tyre pressures cannot be checkedwhen the tyres are cold, assume anincrease of 0.2 to 0.3 bar (3 PSI).

Never deflate a hot tyre.

Note: a label (depending on countryor model) fixed to the edge or frameof the driver's door gives therecommended tyre pressures.

Changing wheels around

Each of the sensorsincorporated in thevalves is dedicated toone single wheel: under

no circumstances should youswap the wheels.There is a risk of falseinformation which could haveserious consequences.

Fitting new tyres

For safety reasons, thisoperation must becarried out by aspecialist.

Fitting different tyres maychange your vehicle as follows:- It may mean that your car no

longer conforms to currentregulations.

- It may change the way ithandles when cornering.

- It may cause the steering to beheavy.

- It may cause tyre noise.- It may affect the use of snow

chains.

FUSES

Fuse box 3If a fault occurs in an electricalcomponent, first of all check thatthe fuses are sound.Open cover 1 then lift flap 2.Refer to the fuse allocation label(shown on the page opposite) underthe flap 2 (shown on the pageopposite).It is advisable not to use the freefuse locations.

Check the fuse in questionand replace it, if necessary,with another fuse, whichmust be of the same rating.

If you fit a fuse with an overly-highrating, it may cause the electricalcircuit to overheat (risk of fire) inthe event of an item of equipmentusing an excessive amount ofcurrent.

switched off before disconnectingor reconnecting the battery.

- When charging, stop the chargerbefore connecting or disconnectingthe battery.

- Do not place metal objects on thebattery to avoid creating a shortcircuit between the terminals.

Handle the battery withcare as it containssulphuric acid which mustnot come into contact with

the eyes or skin. If it does, wash theaffected area with plenty of coldwater.Ensure naked flames, red-hotobjects and sparks do not comeinto contact with the battery asthere is a risk of explosion.Take care when working in theengine compartment as the enginecooling fan may cut in at anymoment without warning.

Connecting a battery chargerBoth battery leads must bedisconnected (engine switched off).Do not disconnect the battery whenthe engine is running. Follow theinstructions for use given by themanufacturer of the battery chargeryou are using.Only a well-charged andwell-maintained battery will have along and useful life and enable youto start the vehicle’s enginenormally.The battery must be kept clean anddry.Have the battery's charge statuschecked regularly:• Especially if you use your vehicle

for short journeys or for frequentdriving in town.

• When the exterior temperaturedrops (in winter), the chargedeclines. In winter, only use thoseelectrical features which arereally necessary.

• Finally, you should understandthat the charge decreasesnaturally as a result of certainpermanent consumers such as:the clock, aftermarket accessories,etc.

When a large number of accessoriesare fitted to the vehicle, have themconnected to + after ignition. In thiscase, it is advisable to have yourvehicle fitted with a battery whichhas an increased capacity. Consultyour RENAULT Dealer.

If your vehicle is to be left stationaryfor a relatively long time, disconnectthe battery or have it rechargedregularly, in particular during coldweather. The equipment with amemory, radio and trip computer willthen have to be reprogrammed. Thebattery must be stored in a cool dryplace, protected from frost.

Special procedures maybe required to chargesome batteries. Consultyour RENAULT Dealer.

Avoid all risk of sparks whichmay cause an immediateexplosion and charge the batteryin a well-ventilated area. Risk ofserious injury.

Starting the vehicle using thebattery from another vehicleProceed as follows when startingyour vehicle from another vehicle’sbattery:Obtain suitable jump leads (with alarge cross section) from aRENAULT Dealer or, if you alreadyhave jump leads, ensure that theyare in perfect condition.The two batteries must have anidentical voltage: 12 volts. Thebattery supplying the currentshould have a capacity (amp-hours,Ah) which is at least the same asthat of the discharged battery.An iced-up battery must be thawedout before current is supplied to it.Ensure that there is no risk ofcontact between the two vehicles(risk of short circuiting when thepositive terminals are connected)and that the discharged battery isproperly connected. Switch off yourvehicle ignition.Start the engine of the vehiclesupplying the current and run it atan intermediate engine speed.

Secure the positive cable (+) A tothe (+) terminal 1 of the dischargedbattery, then to the (+) terminal 2 ofthe battery supplying the current.Secure negative cable (–) B to (–)terminal 3 of the battery supplyingthe current and then to (–) terminal4 of the discharged battery.

Check that there is no contactbetween cables A and B and thatcable A (+) is not touching anymetal parts on the vehiclesupplying the current.Start the engine as you wouldnormally. As soon as it starts,disconnect cables A and B inreverse order (4-3-2-1).

WINDSCREEN WIPER BLADES

Replacing windscreen wiperblades 1- Lift wiper arm 2;- fold the blade 1 down into a

horizontal position;- slide the blade 1 until the catch 3

is released on the windscreenwiper arm.

RefittingTo refit the wiper blade, proceed inreverse order to removal. Make surethat the blade is correctly locked inposition.

Windscreen washer jetsThese can be adjusted using a toolsuch as a flat-head screwdriver.

• In frosty weather, makesure the wiper bladesare not iced to thewindscreen (risk of

motor overheating).

• Keep an eye on the conditionof the blades. Change thewiper blades as soon as theybegin to lose efficiency(approximately once a year).

Rear screen wiper 4- Lift wiper arm 5 until it locks;- pivot blade 4 until it unclips from

its shaft.

RefittingClip the blade to the shaft to refit thewiper blade. Make sure that theblade is correctly locked inposition.

Radio location AOpen cover 1.Unclip the cover. The connectionsare found behind the cover: aerial, +and – supply, speaker wires.

• In all cases, follow themanufacturer's fitting instructionscarefully.

• The specifications of the bracketsand wires (available as aRENAULT parts accessory) varydepending on the equipmentlevel of your vehicle and the typeof radio.Consult your RENAULT Dealerfor the correct part number.

• No work may be carried out onthe electric circuit of the vehicle,except by RENAULT engineers: ifthe system is connectedincorrectly, it may result indamage being caused to theelectrical installation and/or theunits connected to it.

Electrical and electronicaccessories• any work on the electrical circuit

of the vehicle must be carried outby RENAULT networktechnicians: if the system isconnected incorrectly, it mayresult in damage being caused tothe electrical equipment and/orthe units connected to it.

• if the vehicle is fitted with anyafter-market electrical equipment,make sure that the unit is correctlyprotected by a fuse. Establish therating and position of this fuse.

Fully insert the RENAULT Cardinto the card reader to unlock thesteering wheel and to use theindicator lights (stop lights,indicators, etc.). The towedvehicle's lights must be switched onat night.

It is also important to observe thetowing conditions defined by thelegislation for the particular countryyou are in. Do not exceed the towingweight for your vehicle. Consultyour RENAULT Dealer.

Only use the front 1 and rear 4towing points (never use thedriveshafts). These towing pointsmay only be used for pulling thevehicle, never for lifting it eitherdirectly or indirectly.

Access to towing pointsUnclip cover 2 or 5.

First screw in towing ring 3 by handas far as it will go. Then finishtightening it using the wheelbracefrom the tool kit.

- RENAULT recommendsthe use of a rigid towingbar. If a rope or cable isused (where the law

allows this), the vehicle beingtowed must be able to brake.

- A vehicle must not be towed if itis not fit to be driven.

- Do not accelerate or brakesuddenly when towing, as thismay result in damage beingcaused to the vehicle.

- When towing a vehicle, do notexceed 15 mph (25 km/h).

Towing a vehicle with anautomatic gearbox: specialnotesEngine switched off: The gearbox isno longer lubricated. It is preferableto tow this type of vehicle on atrailer or tow it with the frontwheels off the ground.In exceptional cases, you can towthe vehicle with all four wheels onthe ground for a maximum distanceof 30 miles (50 km).

The gear selector levermust be in neutral(position N).If lever 1 becomes jammed

in position P, while you arepressing the brake pedal, the levercan be released manually.To do this, undo the base of gaiter 3.Press the button located underneaththe gaiter and at the same time pressunlocking button 2 to move thelever from position P.

• The engine overheats. The coolanttemperature indicator light comeson (or the gauge needle moves intothe red zone).

Coolant pump: belt stretched orbroken.Engine cooling fan not working.

Stop the vehicle and switch off theengine. Consult a RENAULT Dealer.

Coolant leaks. Check the condition of hoses andclips.Check the expansion bottle: it shouldcontain coolant. If it does not, top itup (once it has cooled). Take care notto scald yourself. This action is onlytemporary: consult your RENAULTDealer as soon as possible.

Radiator: Never fill a hot radiator with cold coolant if a considerable quantity of coolant has been lost. After anyoperation on the vehicle which has involved even partial draining of the cooling system, it must be refilled witha new mixture prepared in the correct proportions. Reminder: only products approved by RENAULT's TechnicalDepartment may be used for this purpose.
