To Reinvest is to embrace the river as a town gateway and its most valuable natural and economic asset. A site that once served a single ‘utility’ is re-imagined to enrich and engage residents and visitors in a way that celebrates the Fox River.

StrategiesRedevelop the site with a •combination of river-oriented business, restaurant, and residential uses.Internalize car parking, •relocate boat storage, and maximize park and pedestrian spaces. Incorporate three-dimensional •green space on rooftop terraces with views of the river.

Green Urbanism Guiding PrinciplesEnhance pedestrian connections 1. between downtown, the Metra station, residential neighborhoods, and the riverfront park, greenway, and trails. Celebrate water in all forms 2. and protect and restore natural resources. Evoke the natural and cultural 3. history of the Fox River and Fox River Grove community.Provide ample seating, wayfinding, 4. and other pedestrian amenities.Ensure that spaces are safe, 5. convenient, and accessible to all.Create public space for a range of 6. activities and ages.Integrate cost effective, 7. multiple-benefit, and multiple-purpose green site and building improvements.Support pedestrian-oriented shops, 8. restaurants, and services.Beautify the public realm in a 9. durable and lasting way. Improve implementation, 10. operations, and maintenance with resource-efficient practices.

Retail uses, such as boat and fishing gear rental and outdoor café seating, are integrated •with a multi-story restaurant and partial green roof terraces overlooking the river and Riverfront Park.

The residences provide a housing choice that offers a low-maintenance lifestyle and access •to a green roof, terrace, vegetable garden, and outdoor recreation space overlooking the beautiful Fox River. Parking is provided below grade or within the first floor of the building.

The boardwalk traverses a river edge planted with regionally appropriate species to enhance •the natural expression of river ecology, while providing pedestrian access to the riverfront, boat slips, and the potential future Fox River greenway and trail system.

The riverfront site’s proximity to downtown, the Metra station, existing residential neighborhoods, and a potential future Fox River greenway system makes it an ideal setting to connect to the river as an amenity. A new mixed-use block with water-oriented shops and eateries includes accessible housing units with river views.

Boat access has been relocated to a less prominent and economically important site and •replaced with higher and better uses, including a river-friendly green space and park that incorporates rain gardens, permeable pavement, and water-oriented public art that helps cool and clean rain water before being slowly released into the Fox River.

Fox River Grove can Preserve and improve this boating access point to encourage residents and visitors to celebrate and enjoy the Fox River as a community gateway, park, and celebration space.

StrategiesRedevelop the site as a •destination marina and restaurant with river views.Improve access to and along •the river’s edge.Re-surface driving and walking •surfaces with sustainable materials.Replace structures with high •performance green buildings.Incorporate shade trees and •ornamental vegetation.

The park space is shaded with trees and planted with functional, absorbent rain gardens •and landscape beds of regionally appropriate species that attract birds and butterflies while helping to slow, cool, cleanse, and infiltrate rainwater on site, thereby protecting the Fox River from polluted runoff.

Paved surfaces, including parking areas and the outdoor plaza incorporate permeable •materials that reduce the urban heat island effect and infiltrate rain water runoff.

A wooden boardwalk crafted with locally obtained, sustainably harvested materials provides •access to boat slips along a naturalized river edge and connects to a potential future greenway park and trail system along the length of the Fox River.

A re-imagined Riverfront Park can be one of Fox River Grove’s points of community pride, a sustainable village bookend with a strong pedestrian connection to the Main Street retail and Metra station to the east, and a green node along a potential Fox River greenway trail system.

Current recreational uses requiring pavement for boat and trailer access are preserved and •concentrated on a portion of the site, while a new public park restores a greener space more compatible with the Fox River environment. The new green provides space for celebration, relaxation, and arts and cultural programming next to the beautiful Fox River.

Retail uses, including boat, fishing gear rental, and bait shop, are integrated with a two-story •restaurant café with ample outdoor seating and a partial green roof terrace overlooking the river and Riverfront Park.

INNOVATE FOX RIVER GROVE

CONCEPT:

Conservation Design Forum / 630.559.2000

Elmhurst, IL / Ann Arbor, MI

Green Roof Terrace View

The riverfront site has been reclaimed with a naturalized edge accessed via a wooden •fishing pier and boardwalk crafted with locally obtained, sustainably harvested materials that connect Fox River Grove to a potential Fox River greenway and trail system.

Residential uses offer housing options for couples, families, and individuals in any stage of •life with access to private green roof terraces and space for relaxation, vegetable and herb gardens, and entertaining.

A central public park and landscaped rain water collection system flows between residential •buildings and helps filter and infiltrate rain water as it flows towards the Fox River. The naturalized landscape also attracts river wildlife such as green herons, frogs, and birds.

As in the other scenarios, retail uses such as boat and fishing gear rental and outdoor •café seating are integrated with a second-story restaurant and a partial green roof terrace overlooking the Riverfront Park.

Fox River Grove re-imagines its downtown corridor as a renewed civic center of living space, activities, and destinations that improve quality of life, protect precious natural resources, and provide a great Riverfront Park and plaza that connects to Main Street and the transit station.
