The A-House is a former industrial building dating from 1960.In recent years the building has undergone extensive refurbis-hment. Today it provides shops, commercial areas and, mainly,service apartments (furnished apartments attached to hotelfacilities such as cleaning, laundry, breakfast and fitness centerwhich you can rent for a day, a month or a year, depending onneed).The former industrial building has a character and his-tory that you do not find in the modern or new buildings. Theambition with the A-House has been to extend the raw indus-trial building with a new and modern expression, without eli-minating the unique character of the old building.Untraditionalsolutions of the interior are used in the modernizing and haveresulted in very attractive apartments with cast concrete, castfloors and surfaces of granite. Outside the building has beengiven a thorough facelift. The old facade has been completelyremoved and replaced with a new and transparent glass faca-de, framed in bronze aluminium, giving the building its new cha-racter. The A-House offers a range of modern and attractiveapartment types. With a total dwelling count of approximately200 and a shopping arcade with ten shop units, the project canbe considered without doubt as a small "town". This conver-sion has led to increased attention towards open, recreationalspace and in that context the roof is constructed as a 4000square meter landscape with hills, pastures and decking.

A-House es un antiguo edificio industrial que data de 1960. Enlos últimos años el edificio ha sido objeto de una ampliaremodelación, y hoy en día ofrece tiendas, zona comercial y,principalmente, los apartamentos de servicio (amueblados yconectados a instalaciones como limpieza, lavandería, desayunoy fitness center, que se pueden alquilar por un día, un mes o unaño dependiendo de las necesidades). El antiguo edificio indus-trial tiene un carácter y una historia que no hallamos en losedificios nuevos o modernos. El interés con la A-House ha sidoampliar el crudo edificio industrial con una expresión nueva ymoderna, sin eliminar el carácter único del antiguo edificio. Lassoluciones poco tradicionales del interior se utilizan en lamodernización y se traducen en apartamentos muy atractivos,con hormigón moldeado y superficies de granito. En el exte-rior, el edificio ha recibido un lifting completo. La antiguafachada ha sido completamente eliminada y reemplazada poruna nueva fachada de vidrio, enmarcada en aluminio colorbronce, dando al edificio una nueva personalidad. A-Houseofrece una variedad tipológicamuy atractiva y moderna deapartamentos. Con aproximadamente 200 viviendas y una gale-ría comercial con diez tiendas, el proyecto puede considerarsesin dudarlo como una pequeña "ciudad". Esta conversión haprovocado mayor atención hacia el espacio exterior, abierto,de recreo, y en ese contexto, la cubierta se construye como unpaisaje de 4000 metros cuadrados con montículos, zonas ver-des y madera.

The landscape is classified as a tablecloth over seven hills, aseach represents a penthouse.A total of 13 stair towers inviteall the house residents to stay in the open air with fine viewsover the city, port and the surrounding landscape ofCopenhagen. During the development there has been greatattention towards creating a house that presents a large rangeof resident types. Instead of developing a single housing typewith a general appeal, the A-House contains a big variety ofhousing types, each of which are aimed at narrow segments ofpeople. It has been the goal to create a complex housing envi-ronment where many different types of people and age groups,together can create a life in and around the building.

El paisaje se clasifica como un mantel sobre siete colinas, yaque cada una representa un ático. Un total de trece torres,correspondientes a los núcleos de escalera, invitan a todos losresidentes del edificio a permanecer al aire libre, con buenasvistas sobre la ciudad, el puerto y el paisaje circundante deCopenhague. Durante el desarrollo, los arquitectos han presta-do gran atención hacia la creación de una vivienda que presen-te una amplia gama de tipos de residentes. En lugar de desarro-llar un tipo de vivienda único con un atractivo genérico, A-House contiene una gran variedad de tipos de vivienda, cadauno de los cuales están encaminado a residentes de segmen-tos específicos. THE YEW DELL GARDENS VISITOR CENTER IS A NEWFACILITY FOR A PROPERTY FOUNDED IN 1943 BY HOR-TICULTURALIST & NURSERYMAN THEODORE KLEIN.

The historic property, recognized for its unique collection ofthemed structures and gardens, is part of the GardenConservancy, a national organization dedicated to saving andpreserving AmericaÊs exceptional gardens.Funded in its enti-rety by a private donor, the project entails the rehabilitation ofan existing tobacco barn situated near the property entry. Theprogram includes: Reception area with information & ticketsales, gift shop, plant sale area, group tour meeting zone, inter-net sales office, and storage. Several key challenges guidedtheproject: a modestconstruction budget, a tight 5-month design&construction completion schedulecoinciding with a majorpublicevent and an ambitiousprogram proposed for an exis-tingstructure with limited availablespace. Preserving the exte-rior iconic image of the tobacco barn structure, the new faci-lity is designed as a Âbuilding-within-a-buildingÊ. For economyand energy efficiency, the project utilizes the shell of the exis-ting barn as an independent shade structure, leaving it essen-tially unaltered with the exception of minor framing stabiliza-tion. Working with existing structural bay modules, new condi-tioned interior spaces are consolidated to one side of the barninterior while unconditioned spaces are designed as coveredflexible-use areas.

La propiedad histórica, reconocida por su colección única deestructuras temáticas y jardines, es parte del GardenConservancy, una organización nacional dedicada a guardar yconservar jardines excepcionales de América. Financiado en sutotalidad por un donante privado, el proyecto supone la reha-bilitación de un granero de tabaco existente situado cerca dela entrada de la propiedad. El programa incluye: recepción coninformación y venta de entradas, tienda de regalos, zona deventa de plantas, un punto de encuentro para grupos, oficina deventas por internet y almacén. Varios desafíos clave guiaron elproyecto: un presupuesto modesto de construcción, un apre-tado calendario de cinco meses para el diseño y finalización dela construcción (haciéndolo coincidir con un acontecimientopúblico) y un ambicioso programa para una estructura existen-te con un espacio disponible muy limitado. Para preservar laimagen icónica de exterior de la estructura del almacén o gal-pón de tabaco, las nuevas instalaciones están diseñadas comoun „edificio-dentro-de-un-edificio‰. Por economía y eficienciaenergética, el proyecto utiliza la cáscara del almacén existentecomo si fuese una estructura independiente de sombrajo,dejándola esencialmente inalterada con la excepción de unaestabilización estructural menor de la cercha. Trabajando conlos módulos estructurales existentes, nuevos espacios interio-res acondicionados se consolidan a un lado del granero mien-tras que los espacios no acondicionados se diseñan comoáreas cubiertas de uso flexible.

The use of light (both natural & artificial) is a key design ele-ment that transforms the facility throughout the day, affectingthe transparency and visibility of the various programmaticcomponents while amplifying the rustic characteristics of theexisting tobacco barn. Acting as either a mirror or a transpa-rent boundary depending on the viewing angle, tempered glasswalls reflect and refract sunlight, views and outer barn walls,emphasizing a sense of spaciousness while allowing the originalbarn to visually register within interior spaces. During the eve-ning, the facility becomes a glowing lantern within the gardens,with the outer barn shell expressed though interior light filte-ring through gaps between the wood sidings.

El uso de la luz (tanto natural como artificial) es un elementoclave del diseño que transforma las instalaciones durante todoel día, y que afecta a la transparencia y la visibilidad de losdiversos componentes programáticos mientras amplifica lascaracterísticas rústicas del almacén de tabaco preexistente.Actúa como un espejo o límite transparente, y dependiendodel ángulo de visualización, paredes de vidrio templado reflejany refractan la luz del sol, las vistas y las paredes exteriores,haciendo hincapié en el sentido de amplitud y permitiendo queel galpón original quede registrado visualmente dentro de losespacios interiores. The exte-rior envelope consists on thepreservation of existing tobaccobarn (minor framing stabilization), pressure-treated wood fra-ming, closed-cell insulation, gypsum board, sealed concrete slabon grade with rigid insulation lining, tempered glass and pain-ted steel framing. The finish materials used on interiors are:Tongue & groove pine planks, MDFslat-wall system displaypanels,sealed concrete, tempered glass, translucent film andpainted steelframing.Mechanical Systems includenaturalventila-tion & daylight, ductedheating & cooling system,florescent &dimmable track-mounted par light fixtures.
