Questions?

Why is it important to set goals?

“If you don’t know where you are going. How can you expect to get there?” (Basil S.

Walsh)

Setting goals is important step in achieving an intended outcome…

When Goals Go Bad…

Have you ever set a goal that you didn’t achieve?

Why didn’t you achieve it?

S.M.A.R.T. Goals

• Specific• Measurable• Attainable• Realistic• Timely

Page 14: Reflection & Goal Setting

Specific• A specific goal has a much greater

chance of being accomplished than a general goal.

• Who is involved?• What do I want to accomplish?• Where? Identify a location.• When? Establish a time frame.• How? Identify requirements and constraints.• Why? Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of

accomplishing the goal.

Page 15: Reflection & Goal Setting

Measurable• Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress

toward the attainment of each goal you set.• When you measure your progress, you stay on

track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your goal.

• To determine if your goal is measurable, ask questions such as:– How much? How many? How will I know when

it is accomplished?

Page 16: Reflection & Goal Setting

Attainable• Be realistic. Make sure your goal is

feasible in terms of the resources available to you. You want to grow personally, so reach, but be reasonable or you'll set yourself up for disappointment.

Page 17: Reflection & Goal Setting

Relevant• Choose goals that matter. • Choosing a goal that is relevant to

you will help to maintain motivation to achieve it!

If it’s not relevant you won’t care!!

Page 18: Reflection & Goal Setting

Time-Oriented• Set a deadline or several deadlines

for when you’d like to achieve your goal.

• Your deadline should be practical and realistic.

Page 19: Reflection & Goal Setting

S.M.A.R.T.E.R.• After your goals are set you

should…

• Evaluate & Re-evaluate!!
