Why recycling is important?

• Recycling is important, because:

• We have to care about our planet.

• It protects the environment.

• Our planet gets more and more polluted every day.

What materials can we recycle?

• We can recycle:

• plastic,

• paper,

• glass,

• organic waste,

• metal.

Where do you recycle this materials? Which places in yours school?

• In our district there are few places where we can leave rubbish to recycle.

• You can also order special truck to arrive to your house and take your rubbish away.

• We’ve got special dustbins in every classroom, where we can throw away plastic and paper.

What is plastic made from?

• Plastic is made from cellulose, casein, rubber, synthetic substances from coal, air and water.

Why are plastics called plastics?

• The word "plastic" comes from the shortened name for a plastic mass ". The name "plastic mass" comes from the fact that the hot plastic during forming has the consistency of modelling clay, generally called ”plasticine”.

Can you think of any hazards that plastic can cause?

• If it’s not recycled, it can impure enviroment.

• Plastic is degrading for a very long time.

Can you name some items made of plastic?

• Everything can be from plastic For example:

• Bottles;

• Dishes;

• Toys;

• Packagings;

• Furniture

How many times a day do you use something made out of plastic?

• We use something made from plastic all the time. We sit on a plastic chair and we use a plastic keyboard. We drink from plastic bottles and eat our lunch from plastic box.

Can recycled plastic be used in food containers? Why? Why not?

• Lunch are often packed in plastic boxes, we use plastic plates, bowls, forks, cups.

• Using recycled plastic for food containers is safe. It doesn’t hazard our health.

How can each type of plastic be recycled?

• material recycling- the use of waste and used materials for the production of new products.,

• chemical recycling- a chemical reaction with water or other chemicals ,

• thermal recycling-

burning rubbish to get energy

What items are made from recycled plastic?

• Recycled plastic is used to made things like:

-shopping bags

-fuel oils

-furniture

-foils

How long do plastic items take to degrade? Give some examples.

• Plastic degrades from 100 to even 1000 years.

• Examples:

• One- time shopping bag- 450 years

• Plastic bottle- 800 years

There are special places, where plastic is recycled.

What is aluminium foil made from?

Foil is made by rolling molten aluminium, which is produced from mineral called bauxite.

How long does trash foil last to degrade? Products made from aluminium degrade from 200 to 500 years

Aluminium foil which was thrown in forest last year will possibly degrade in 2512.

What can be the effects on humans and animals of foil disposal?

There can be many very dangerous effects on both, humans and animals. Some waste will eventually rot, but not all, and in the process it may smell or generate methane gas, which is explosive and poisonous for us and animals.

What we did:

• In March (04-29) we were collecting batteries.

• Everybody could bring everyday maximally 5 batteries.

• In our school we hanged posters which informed about our action.

Summary

• in our action we collected 144 batteries,

• 10 people have taken part in the activity,

• we are happy about the results.

ACTIVITY: making soap

STEP 1

• Firstly, we poured oil to the beaker.

STEP 2

We added some flour to the oil.

We started to stir it all but we had to stir always in the same way, we had to decide weather we do it clockwise or not and we couldn’t change it during stiring.

STEP 3

• Then, we poured some water to the beaker with flour and oil.

• Then, we had to stir it again. For very, very long time

• We added some dye, so our soap could have a nice colour.

Then we poured the mix onto several plastic forms.

And finally, we had to wait for 2 weeks.

First excercise

Firstly, we needed to go and count how many cars with how many passengers will be on the street. Here is our conclusion.

Project about the electronic waste

Students in our school made a big project about the electronic waste. There were two stages of making it.

Stage I

• The project group surveyed other students about „ How do we manage the elctronic waste, how much electronic waste are there and where should we keep them”.

• The project group surveyed their families about the same topic.

• The project group found out where are the 5 nearest collecting points of electronic waste from our school.

• Students made posters that encouradged others to leave electronic waste in right collecting points.

• The project group prepared a presenataion about their work, which will be now shown.

Our success in doing the electronic wastes project:

• We looked into the problem of electronic waste

• We educated small children about the problem

• We informed all students about it

• We spread a lot of leaflets around the neighbourhood.

• ... and we won’t stop!
