Happy Holidays!

I hope you are prepared for the Holiday Season and are ready to spend time with family and friends. As I write this, we at Campus Recreation are busy getting ready to host the Region IV NIRSA Flag Football Tournament for the fourth year. This is the largest collegiate flag football tournament in the country and the staff here does an outstanding job running not only the largest tournament, but the best.

We are also busy preparing to host our annual climbing competition later this month as well as filling a few vacant staff positions in Campus Recreation. So while I’d like to say we are winding down the semester, the truth is that we never really slow down that much. It seems there is always something to prepare for or an event just on the horizon. Many of you may relate to that feeling all too well. That is one of the reasons Campus Recreation has been working with members of the campus community to create the new SFA wellness model. While the look of the model is still in the design phase, the content and message of the model are already being used. Our definition states that wellness is the on-going process of making healthy choices to maintain balance in all dimensions of life. The message is simple and yet difficult for many of us to achieve, especially in the times we are the most busy. But those are precisely the times we need to embrace an attitude of wellness the most.

During this season amidst all the hustle and bustle that it and life brings, don’t forget to slow down enough and find time for the things that really matter in life. Not deadlines at work, gifts to buy, travel plans, decorations and all the things that keep us busy, but finding the time to actually enjoy and appreciate loved ones, help others less fortunate, and take care of ourselves and the world around us. Take a look at the wellness model and see if there are areas in your life that could use more balance. Then use the time, energy and resources you have to help create the life you want instead of the one that gets overwhelmed and off balance with all the stuff we “have” to do.

Happy Holidays,

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHTSFA Campus Recreation has a tradition of awarding student staff the Fred Factor of the Month Award. The Award is based off the story of Fred the postal worker from Mark Sanborn’s book titled The Fred Factor.

At Campus Recreation, our goal is to increase the awareness of those students who are going above and beyond in their work with our customers. “Fred” from the book was known for doing extraordinary things because they were the right thing to do, not necessarily because he was told he needed to. We want to create that same culture with our student staff and recognize those who have done so.

Campus Recreation began this tradition in the Fall of 2008. The award was created by a student employee, who created the process, the board, the nominations box, etc. This award is completely student-driven and decided on by students. While professional staff and graduate assistants can nominate someone, they have zero say in who gets awarded the Fred of the Month. In the Campus Recreation student workroom there is a nomination box where any student staff can nominate a coworker for being “Fred-like.” There is a committee of students who read through the nominations and select who they think was most “Fred-like.”

This award is important to Campus Recreation because we want to create a culture where our students strive to go above and beyond in their work here. It is very important that our customers feel welcomed and appreciated while they are working out in the building. “Fred” illustrated how working for the postal service delivering mail does not have to be an ordinary job, but could be extraordinary with a positive mind set. Since our students are ultimately the face of Campus Recreation, it is important to get them on board with this positive mind set so they can be “Freds,” too.

For an example, the September Fred of the Month winner was Carl Williams, an Operations Manager at the Student Rec Center. He was nominated for the Fred Award for the following “above and beyond” act:

“During his free time, Carl was playing basketball in the HPE Gym and witnessed a friend fall and land on his head. Carl immediately called the Operations Manager on duty and acted as the second responder since he was on the scene before the Fitness Assistant was able to arrive. Even though he was not on duty, he followed protocol as if he was and relayed all necessary information to the Service Assistant since the Operations Manager was busy with inline stabilization of the injured patron. Carl went above and beyond by utilizing his safety skills in the facility while off the clock, and without any hesitation, ensuring the patron’s well-being.

FITNESS AND WELLNESS

Page 7: Rec Insider - November 2011-January 2012

Page 5 Page 6

FITNESS AND WELLNESSA recent trend across university campuses has been the discovery or re-discovery of Wellness. As the word “Wellness” is approached, it is very apparent that many have different dimensions and models with which they follow or refer to. We have seen the same trend here within the SFA community. Many different organizations and departments are utilizing a variety of definitions, creating an element of confusion for our students and community. A small committee consisting of individuals with a passion for wellness came together last year (2010) to create an SFA Wellness Model. Approved this past summer for campus-wide rollout, the new SFA Wellness Model is now in effect. The model is comprised of seven dimensions and a definition of Wellness, which is “the ongoing process of making healthy choices to maintain balance in all dimensions of life.”

Casey Boggess graduated from SFA with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in Fall 2007 and a Masters of Business Administration in Spring 2009. Casey had the pleasure of being part of the first group of Professionals and Graduate Assistants at Campus Recreation and worked as the Graduate Assistant for Intramurals in 2007 and 2008 under the Intramural and Sports Club Coordinator, Brian Mills, who is now the Assistant Director for Intramurals, Sport Clubs, and Camps. “It was a great experience to be involved in starting the new department and opening the new building, which still looks awesome.”

His best memory with Campus Rec was being able to see how the department added to the student experience.

“The Rec Center provided a great outlet for students to get away from the books for a little bit to either work out, play some basketball or sand volleyball, or just hang out by the pool.”

While working at Campus Recreation, Casey was also very involved in intramural sports as a participant, winning championships in flag football, indoor volleyball, sand volleyball, washers, and flickerball.

Casey is now the Production Supervisor for Texas Reconstruction Company, Inc., which is based out of Haltom City, Texas. When asked how his time at SFA prepared him for a job after graduation, he responded by encouraging students to find something to get involved in, whether it’s a job, organization, or intramural team, and make the most of the college experience. Also he mentioned to remember to enjoy your time at SFA because, “college only happens once and flies by before you know it.

“What you learn in the classroom is great and will help you accomplish your goals, but the lessons you learn and the experiences you have outside the classroom will help just as much to mold you into the young professional you are about to become. Interaction with the many different types of people you come across while in school will teach you how to adapt and make compromises with every different situation you are involved in.”

Vanessa Webster graduated from SFA in May 2010 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology. She worked for Campus Recreation as an Operations Manager in facilities all four years of her college career. When asked her favorite memories working for Campus Rec, she said “the first few days of the semesters when the building is in full swing and people walk in for the first time- I loved seeing the look on their faces! I also miss the facility itself, as I know how well we took care of it!” Her advice for current students is “to enjoy college as much as you can, learn from everyone around you, establish strong communication skills, and build relationships. Remember that every experience is a learning lesson and everything you’re doing now is in preparation for your future!”

Vanessa is from Houston and is back in Houston working in sales. She works for a company called Apex Systems, Inc. They sell IT staffing to major clients nationwide and are the top eight staffing firm in the United States. She works as a specialty recruiter and is currently going through “pre-sales” training to be an Account Manager.

Where Are YOU Now?An update on former IMS participants

Page 7 Page 8

The Silver Bullets made their Intramurals debut under another name, The

Pretenders, starting in Fall 1982. The Pretenders were the IMS Overall

Champions in 1984 and 1985. In the spring of 1985, they changed

their name to The Silver Bullets, and their reign continued. They were

Overall Champions again in 1986, winning Flag Football, Basketball, and

Softball, under the coaching of John Leonard, another SFA student at

the time.

Jana Tucker (now Jana Redfield), was an SFA student from 1983 to

1986 and played Intramurals from the spring of 1984 to the spring of

1986. Jana graduated with her Bachelor’s in Education and stayed at

SFA to earn her Master’s of Education, working as a graduate assistant

in the Kinesiology Department. Her favorite memory of SFA Intramurals

is playing flag football in the mud and rain and “being so filthy that JD

(now my husband) had to give us all a ride in the back of his pickup truck.”

After her time at SFA, Jana taught and coached at New Caney ISD and was a teacher in the SFA Kinesiology Department.

She now works in the SFA STEM Research and Learning Center as the Grants Coordinator. She still keeps in touch with

several Silver Bullet teammates, including Jamie Pridgen, Shannon McCollum, and Gay Shields.

John Leonard started working for Dr. Worsham and playing Intramurals when he first arrived at SFA in 1981. He graduated

from SFA with a Bachelor’s of Physical Education and stayed at SFA working as Worsham’s graduate assistant and

received his Master’s degree in the same field. According to John, coaching was just “part of the fun of Intramurals...better

teams wanted someone giving them direction.” John coached in flag football, flickerball, volleyball, and basketball. His

favorite memory coaching the Silver Bullets was when they won the basketball championship one year. The team actually

had so many players that they split into two teams, both coached by Leonard. Once the playoffs came around, Leonard was

in an interesting position.

“Both my teams won in the semifinals, and I realized I would be

coaching both teams in the finals.”

John is now in his 25th year of coaching women’s volleyball. He

even was the head coach of the Ladyjack Volleyball team in 1986 as

a graduate assistant. He has coached high school girl’s volleyball in

Buffalo, TX, Channelview, TX, Humble, TX, and is now in his 11th year

coaching at Barber’s Hill High School in TX, where his daughter is now

also on the team.

John says he hasn’t kept in touch with any of the ladies on the Silver

Bullets, but he adds, “I would love to see some of them again. We

were good friends back then.” He also notes that his years spent at

SFA were the “best times of my life.”

Dr. Raymond Lee Worsham Scholarship FundThe Campus Recreation Department is excited to announce the creation of the Dr. Raymond Lee Worsham Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship is created to provide financial assistance to current student employees of the Campus Recreation Department.

Dr. Raymond “Ray” Worsham was the Intramural Department Director at SFA for 43 years prior to the creation of the Campus Recreation Department. Dr. Worsham was the keystone to the Intramural Department for more than four decades and his dedication and lasting impact is something that we will celebrate for decades to come with the creation of this scholarship. Under Dr. Worsham, intramural sports flourished to the highest numbers the program has ever seen. Thousands of students spent nights playing on the intramural fields, in the HPE and around campus over Dr. Worsham’s tenure. The strong intramural tradition lives on through our current sport offerings, THE intramural champ shirt, the contact we have with former student athletes in the program and we are privileged to honor him with this scholarship.
