Speaker - Zane Webber AgResearch Centre, Grasslands Campus Topic – Safeguarding Seed Diversity Introduction – John Whitelock Thanks – David Olson Hosts – Ann Ashwell & Barbara Price President Ruth presided over her first meeting very graciously. We had an enjoyable meeting with a prospective new member, Jim Wagg, visiting us. President Ruth requested us all to seek out prospective new members in the community and invite them along. After morning tea we had a very good speaker, Freya Thomson. Freya had us all involved in exercising for our age group. This is to keep us fit and healthy so we can enjoy independence, ease of movement and clarity of thought for many years. Judging from the level of hilarity, and the wide grins we were all very happy with the session. Zane Webber is one of a small team of seed collectors operating at AgResearch’s Grasslands Campus. You may imagine Zane and his colleagues strolling into a field to collect a few seed samples then conduct research in the laboratory, but their working lives a far more adventurous than this. Because plants like ryegrass, kikuyu, plantain, clover, barley and wheat, which are important to our economy, are not indigenous to NZ, seed collectors go overseas to look for seeds in the wild in places like Russia, Armenia, Cyprus and Georgia. Landmines, dangerous roads and far more basic conditions camping in small tents in the wild than normally experienced in NZ are all part of their work environment. But safeguarding seed diversity is critically important for food security as we face uncertain future in terms of climate change. This will prepare us for a visit to Margot Forde Germplasm Centre later in the year. Sunday Lunch 29 th April 12.00 Contrary to expectations is to be at Cafe Brie, in Broadway, near Victoria corner. This delightful café has been visited by many of us and enjoyed. They are welcoming and prepare good food. The Pub at Ashhurst will host us another time. Few cafes and restaurants in PNth open on Sundays now, making Joy’s job of selection difficult. Any helpful suggestions you can make to her will be gladly noted.
