Club Speaker Anne Halford was born in Christchurch and attended St Albans School and Avonside Girls’ High School to which she biked 11 km return across the city each day. Rationing during WW2 meant food was not always plentiful – she had a plot to tend in the vegetable garden. Pleasures like lollies and new clothes were unknown to Anne who received “hand-me-downs”. She recalls the rag-and-bone man, chimney sweep, and the whitebait hawker working the street. Family camps (Anne has six siblings) were memorable. At an early age Anne learnt to knit, darn, sew, embroider, cook and garden. Her father died when Anne was 13. Her mother, a florist, then gave Anne responsibility to make sprays, bunches of flowers and wedding bouquets, and also wreaths which she delivered to funeral parlours on her bike before school. Anne was a Girl Guide, attended an active church youth group, and was a voluntary leader at the YMCA. She married Dean in 1962 and moved to Palmerston North where the railway then ran through the city centre and there were 5 movie theatre buildings. She recalled many shops that no longer exist. Anne taught part-time for 18 years at St Peter’s College and had a dress-making business. Living in Toronto and Melbourne during Dean’s university sabbatical years were great family experiences. Christmas Humour Why is Christmas just like your job? You do all

the work and the fat guy with the suit gets all the credit.

What do you call people who are afraid of Santa Claus? Claustrophobic.

What do you call a singing elf with sideburns? Elfis.

How come you never hear anything about the 10th reindeer named Olive? Olive? You know, ‘Olive, the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names.’

An honest politician, a kind lawyer and Santa Claus were talking when they all noticed a $5 note on the floor. Who picked it up? Santa of course, the other two don't exist!

It was Christmas and the judge was in a merry mood as he asked the prisoner, ‘What are you charged with?’ ‘Doing my Christmas shopping early’, replied the defendant. The judge asked, ’Why is that an offense? How early were you doing this shopping?’ ‘Before the store opened.’

NEW ZEALAND QUIZ Answer below. Men’s basketball in NZ began in the late 1920s. Ninety years on, four Kiwis have made it into the NBA in the US. In 2016 seven Australian teams and one NZ team contest the National Basketball League (NBL). What is the name of (a) the professional NZ team in the NBL, and (b) the NZ team in international competitions?

NZ QUIZ Answer: (a) NZ Breakers. (b) Tall Blacks.

SAMHAIN (pronounced 'Sow-In') is the ancient Celtic festival on which Halloween (‘All Hallows Eve’) is thought to be based. Samhain marks the end of harvest, a time when the veil between the living and the dead is supposedly at its thinnest. The Christian Allhallowtide, from 31 October to 2 November, remembers the dead including saints (hallows), martyrs and all the faithful departed.
