Reading Informational Text 5.RI.1 Quote accurately from a text
when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing
inferences from the text.

Slide 3
Input Inference- a conclusion based on observations, knowledge,
or experiences.
Slide 4
Input Inferences are the able to draw conclusions without being
told directly. Good readers make inferences in order to better
understand what they are reading. By drawing inferences you can
spot patterns and relationships in the text. Readers use clues to
help them make inferences.

Modeling Text For more than a decade before the outbreak of the
American Revolution in 1775, tensions had been building between
colonists and the British authorities. Attempts by the British
government to raise revenue by taxing the colonies (notably the
Stamp Act of 1765, the Townshend Tariffs of 1767 and the Tea Act of
1773) met with heated protest among many colonists, who resented
their lack of representation in Parliament and demanded the same
rights as other British subjects. Colonial resistance led to
violence in 1770, when British soldiers opened fire on a mob of
colonists, killing five men in what was known as the Boston
Massacre. After December 1773, when a band of Bostonians dressed as
Mohawk Indians boarded British ships and dumped 342 chests of tea
into Boston Harbor, an outraged Parliament passed a series of
measures (known as the Intolerable, or Coercive Acts) designed to
reassert imperial authority in Massachusetts.American

that led up to the revolutionary war.

inference was that the Bostonians boarded British ships and dumped
tea into the Boston Harbor.

Checking For Understanding Text Before the Revolutionary War
they had secret meetings which started with the First Continental
Congress, which met in Philadelphia in September of 1774. In all,
56 delegates from 12 colonies (all except Georgia) got together to
decide what to do in response to gaining their independence from
Britain. They urged people to get their guns and fight the British.
But the British army was large and well- trained. American leaders
knew it would be a desperate fight. Questions What is the paragraph
about? The paragraph is about how the people in the United States
were planning to gain their independence.

planning on declare a fight or war to gain their independence.

use to make this inference? The clues I use to make this inference
was that they urged the people to get fire arms to use to fight the
British and the meeting was a secret from Britain.

Slide 14
Guided Practice Text The American Revolutionary War (1775-
1783) was a conflict between Great Britain and the American
Colonies. By winning the war, the colonies earned their
independence from Great Britain and became a separate country.
Spies helped win the war. Questions 1. What is the paragraph about?
______________________________ ______________________________
______________________________ 2. Whose spies were the best?

Independent Practice Text The Stamp Act of 1765 was a tax to
help the British pay for the French and Indian War. The British
felt they were well justified in charging this tax because the
colonies were receiving the benefit of the British troops and
needed to help pay for the expense. The colonies reacted in
protest. They refused to pay the tax. The tax collectors were
threatened or made to quit their jobs. They even burned the stamped
paper in the streets. The colonies also boycotted British products
and merchants. Questions 1. What is the paragraph about?

the Stamp Act of 1765? ______________________________

Slide 16
Homework Text Eventually, the protests of the colonies to the
Stamp Act began to hurt British merchants and businesses. The Stamp
Act was repealed on March 18, 1766. However, the British Parliament
wanted to send a message to the colonies. The Stamp Act may not
have been a good way to tax the colonies, but they still felt they
had the right to tax the colonies. The same day they repealed the
Stamp Act, they passed the Declaratory Act which stated that the
British Parliament had the right to make laws and taxes in the
colonies. Questions 1. What is the paragraph about?
______________________________ ______________________________

repealed the Stamp Act? ______________________________

Slide 17
Homework Text During the Stamp Act time groups of American
patriots called the Sons of Liberty began to form. They took the
protests of British taxes to the streets. They used intimidation to
get tax collectors to resign from their jobs. The Sons of Liberty
would play an important role later during the American Revolution.

Liberty were helping America? ______________________________
