The three Rotary Clubs of Key West (Sunrise, Noon, Sunset) have joined forces once again to raise awareness and collect funds to battle polio across the world. Every school in Key West participated in Purple Pinkie Day last year, where we exchanged $1 donations for students to have their left pinkie stained with Gentian Violet. Gentian Violet is what is used to identify children across the world when they receive the vaccine. It is now a symbol also used to raise awareness about this crippling disease. Students in Key West raised approximately $1900 last year. Last year’s donations from our children resulted in 17,227 children being immunized. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation match these funds each year. On Friday, children will be able to make their donations during recess. In order to have their pinkie dyed, they MUST have a signed permission slip. Purple permission slips are being sent home on Monday. If a child does not have a permission slip but wants to make a donation, we will gladly accept. Students are encouraged to bring more than $1 and to WEAR PURPLE for our school photo. Note: Only one pinkie will be dyed regardless of the amount donated. Students may bring in their forms and money throughout the week. Teachers will hold these items in class until Friday.
