Radio Advert Analysis

S

Citroen DS3

The advert is introduced by a series of loud laser sounds which promote the feel of action. It is then followed by a woman who asks the audience if they think the lasers sound cool. The woman then goes on to say that the sound of the lasers relate to the look of the new Citroen DS3s headlights. This is done to emphasise that the headlights are as cool as the lasers. This is then followed by the engine of the car starting up and gently revving in the background whilst the narrator talks through all of the new features of the Citroen DS3. This is done quickly to make the listener more engaged in what the narrator is saying and also persuades the reader to purchase one of the cars. It is very difficult to sell a car through radio as the customer is unable to view it but by using descriptive and persuasive language, the listener is able to depict the car and therefore wants it. The sound of the car then speeds off into the distance and then the narrator announces how much the car costs per month instead of the total purchase cost. This is done to make the car seem more affordable to potential customers. The Citroen jingle then plays in order to make the branding stick in the listeners mind and then at the end of the advertisement, the terms and conditions then play at a sped up rate.Click here

Compare the Market

This advertisement begins with the companys mascot, Alexander Meerkat exclaiming that every meerkat should know where hes come from. This has absolutely nothing to do with a price comparison website. With lots of advertisements, companies rely solely on the notoriety of their mascots for their advertising. After the meerkat speaks, a backing track is then implemented under the narration. The advert goes on to continue the fictional world of Alexander Meerkat and overlays other sounds of animals such as tigers and elephants. Soon after this, Alexander says that if the listener wants to receive a limited edition safari Oleg toy then they should buy insurance through www.comparethemarket.com. After this, the mascot then announces the company tagline, simples before the terms and conditions are then announced by a British man.Click here

Tesco Price Drop

This Tesco advertisement uses very simple production values as its only element is narration. The ad begins with a man announcing that a new price drop at Tesco has arrived and lots of products are on sale. This is done with comedic effect as the man narrating gasps before he begins listing the sale items and then speeds up when he is reporting all of the individual offers. Whilst the man is listing the offers, a female voice then announces The new price drop at Tesco. Every little helps. The latter sentence is the company slogan which fits nicely in the context of a price drop. The female narrator then voices the terms and conditions whilst still overlaying the man listing the price drop products. The advert finishes with the female narrator ending the terms and conditions and leaving the man talking through the price drop items before quickly fading out.Click here

Children with Cancer

This is an advert about a very serious matter, the life threatening condition of cancer. The advert is aimed at addressing the appeal to help children with cancer. The advertisement begins with a sad melody playing and then a mans voice overlays the melody and talks directly to the audience. The atmosphere of the advertisement is very sombre due to the context. The aim of the advert is to persuade listeners to donate to the Children with cancer UK charity. The advert includes snippets of children asking questions such as Please can I go home soon? which furthermore makes the listener feel inclined to donate to the charity to help in finding a cure to the disease. Nearing the end of the ad, the melody begins to grow more powerful and sounds happier. This is accompanied by the change of tone in narration which tells the audience that by donating they will help save young lives. The number for the charity is repeated several times throughout the advertisement in order to make it stick in the minds of the listeners and the advert ends with an announcement that the Children with cancer charity will receive 100% of the donation.Click here

I love my Grandma

This advert begins with a happy slow tempo backing melody accompanied by an overlaying narration from an adult man. The man begins by exclaiming I love my grandma followed by listing all the wonderful things she would do when the man was a child and resembling her to a great big golden light of love. The advert follows by listing more wonderful things she did and repeating that she was the best person. The advert retains the happy tone by including chuckling from the narrator and the happy tone and melody. The narrator then repeats that he loves his grandma. The music and narration then stops and another narrator announces Ill give you five thousand pounds for her followed by the original narrator saying yeah, ok. This is completely out of the convention of traditional advertising and produces comedic effect which will stick in the listeners mind. A very powerful, upbeat melody then plays as another narrator announces If youd sell your grandma then come and work for Real Radio followed by who theyre looking for i.e. somebody who has great sales skills. The advert finishes with the melody dropping out and a joke where the grandma exclaims that she doesnt want to go with the man. The melody then re-enters and the narrator voices the number of the company before ending.Click here
