Friday Night!
I remember interviewing Tom Warren a number of years ago. Tom was not only a great athlete who was showcased in Sports Illustrated after winning the second-ever
Ironman Triathlon World Championship back in 1979, but he also put on one of the fi rst multisport races ever when he created the Tug’s Swim-Run-Swim event in San Diego during the 1970s. What made the event so unique was that it started with a half-mile swim around Crystal Pier in Pacifi c Beach followed by a fi ve-mile beach run to the Mission Beach Jetty and back before you plunged back into the Pacifi c for another half-mile swim to the fi nish.
Very few races fi nish with a swim, so as a run-ner, you knew you needed to have a big lead on the good swimmers heading into that last swim. If not, it was the ultimate swimmer’s revenge as they’d swim by you or body surf over you on the way to the fi nish.
Tom named the event after his tavern, Tug’s, and the fi rst 75 people to fi nish the event received a Tug’s glass—I still have a few of these around the house—and free breakfast.
People would come across the fi nish line and keep right on running to Tug’s, which was a few blocks away, to make sure they had their glass and their plate of bacon and eggs on display before the 76th person got there.
Bragging rights were as huge to us back then as they are today.
Back in the early days of our sport, we were there for the adrenaline rush of the event itself and the sense of accomplishment at the end—plus the plate of food, the Tug’s glass and the T-shirt.

WHERE DOYOU STAND?BY BOB BABBIT T
[ M Y P L A C E ]
BOB BABBITT | FUNKY DUDE
When I was interviewing Tom, I asked him why he continued to race all kinds of running, swimming, cycling and triathlon events every weekend. Didn’t it get old having to get up early for a race when he knew he could sleep in and just go out and do the same workout on his own? Did he really feel he still had something to prove after racing for so many years?
I think about his response often, even though the interview probably happened over 20 years ago. “It’s sort of like going to school,” he insisted. “If you just studied all the time and never took a test, how would you know where you stand? If I just trained all the time and never raced, it would be the same thing. I want to know where I stand.”
So that’s my question to our RACEPLACE readers. Where do you stand? Yeah, you can go out and jog around the neighborhood, take a ride along the local bike path or swim laps in your condo pool; but there is nothing that replaces signing up for a race, pinning on a number and testing yourself. How fast will you run a 5K, 10K or half marathon this January and how fast will you run that same distance in June?
The team at RACEPLACE is here to inform you, educate you, encourage you and, more impor-tantly, challenge you.
So here’s your challenge; here’s how you fi nd out where you stand: Set a goal, choose a race and fi nd your fi nish line.

J a n / F e b 2 0 1 6 ATHLETE OF THE MONTH - #RPAOM
Cary Russell
Mother of three Cary Russell, 44, was raised in Long Beach, Calif., but now lives in the desert.
At 39, she decided that she didn’t like what was looking back at her in the mirror and decided to get fi t by 40. She began walking a mile and slowly incorporated workouts at home. Then she found a passion for running. In the beginning, she would run a mile in 15 minutes but slowly increased the distance and made better time.
Five years later and 80 pounds lighter, Cary has run eight half marathons and dozens of 5Ks. Fitness has become her passion, and she tries to instill this passion in her children and hopes that someday she might encourage someone needing that drive to just get up and go.
Congratulations, Cary! You’re our fi rst Athlete of the Month for 2016!
As athlete of the month Cary will receive:
• $120 gift card to Roadrunner Sports
• 1 free event entry to any event on our calendar RACEPLACE Calendar

Is a Ketogenic Diet Good for Runners?BY MAT T FITZGERALD
A n increasing number of runners are trying the ketogenic diet—a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet that causes the body to produce ketones
to substitute for the carbs it’s no longer getting from food. Originally intended to treat epilepsy, the ketogenic diet went on to become a popular way to lose weight and is now being used by run-ners and other athletes to increase endurance.
The typical ketogenic runner aims to get about 70 percent of his or her daily calories from fat and limits carbohydrate consumption to 10-15 percent of total calories. If that sounds extreme—well, it is. But proponents of the ketogenic diet for runners insist that it greatly increases the ability of the muscles to burn fat during exercise and thereby boosts endurance.
Science tells a different story, however. Stud-ies have shown that, although the ketogenic diet
does improve fat-burning capacity, this adapta-tion does not translate to better performance. In fact, performance tends to decrease on a ketogenic diet, especially at higher intensities of exercise.
This was shown most recently in a Polish study involving competitive mountain bikers. Eight athletes were placed on each of two diets for four weeks in random order. One diet was ketogenic (70 percent fat, 15 percent carbohy-drate) and the other was balanced (50 percent carbohydrate, 30 percent fat). The ketogenic diet resulted in a signifi cant increase in the ath-letes’ capacity to burn fat during moderate-in-tensity exercise. But performance tests revealed that this adaptation came at a steep cost.
On the balanced diet, the subjects generated 257 watts at lactate threshold intensity and 362 watts during a 15-minute maximal effort. On the low-carb diet, these numbers dropped to 246 watts and 350 watts. According to the study’s authors, the cause of the decline on the keto-genic diet was impairment of the muscles’ ability to burn carbs, which is critical to performance at higher intensities.
Reduced performance is not the only down-side of a ketogenic diet for runners. Another common consequence is unfavorable changes in blood lipids. Not everyone sees their cholesterol
level spike on a 70 percent fat diet, but many people do, so you’re rolling the dice by even trying it.
Another potential pitfall is vitamin and mineral defi ciencies. This happens because eliminating carbohydrate-rich foods from the diet also does away with the micronutrients—among them thia-min, folate, and potassium—that are abundant in high-carb foods.
Other negative effects of a ketogenic diet for runners are psychological and social. In order to consistently get 70 percent of your daily calories from fat, you have to eat large amounts of a very short list of foods (eggs, dairy, fatty meats, oils) and go out of your way to avoid perfectly healthy foods such as fruit and whole grains that are staples in most cuisines. This makes it very hard to relax and enjoy a nice family meal or a dinner out with friends. And for some people the problem goes even further. Men and women who are attracted to extreme diets like the ketogenic diet tend to be susceptible to disordered eating, a predisposition that is then brought out by the diet.
Is it any wonder that, in my worldwide re-search on the diets of the healthiest and fi ttest humans—professional endurance athletes—I have not found a single one that follows a ketogenic diet?

WHY TRAIN FOR CHARITY?BY KAT GUNSUR
When I asked my tight-knit group of Team Challenge triathletes, “Why race for charity?” most of them said,
“Why not?!” Why not run (swim, bike or walk) for something that can help hundreds or thousands of other people?
My “why” started as a quarter-life crisis that has evolved over the past six years as a Team Challenge participant, captain, coach and, for the past four years, manager. (Team Challenge benefi ts the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America; 1.6 million Americans are living with Infl ammatory Bowel Disease, or IBD.)
At 25 years old, I was in the midst of losing control of my life to a variety of personal is-sues. I found that in order to help myself beat this, I had a choice. I wanted to do something that could have an impact on others. So I signed up for a triathlon. At the time, I didn’t even know what a triathlon was! But for some reason I was compelled to do one.
In the midst of helping others by raising critical funds and honoring them in this race, I was able to heal and give myself a more fulfi lling life. To this day, I’m proud to say it was the best decision I’ve ever made towards my recovery.
So WHY do I do it (and why should you)? Everyone has a different reason; and
everyone’s story is always a heart-warming, motivational and often life-changing one to hear.
Denise Smolenski, who is training for the upcoming Bass Lake Classic Triathlon in June 2016 with Team Challenge, says, “Sometimes training can get so grueling, but when I think I’m ready to give in and give up I realize that my son doesn’t have that choice.”
We’ve all had this thought after a long day at the offi ce or when experiencing less than ideal temperatures. When you train to honor others, it helps put things in perspec-tive. Expensive medical bills (upwards of $100,000/month for some patients), missed
social events due to chronic pain and lengthy hospital stays are just a part of it. IBD suffer-ers don’t have a choice, but we do.
My “why” is to run (and swim and bike) away from the negative things weighing me down and sprint towards the positive. I do it season after season to connect with other like-minded people and to help me stay humble. It’s almost as if my worries become less important and my teammates’ struggles with this disease become my own. Together, as a family, we experience each hard hill climb, every cold open-water swim, every hospital visit; and we celebrate all our accomplish-ments—every triathlon breakthrough and race fi nish, reaching a personal fundraising goal and, ultimately, stories of remission.
“My why is to give hope. Hope for a cure,
hope that happier times are ahead, hope be-cause those suffering from these f@#%! ter-rible diseases realize they are not alone; their story matters,” says Chris Holcroft who will also be racing the Bass Lake Classic Triathlon in the Sierra Nevada foothills on June 4, 2016 (training starts February 2016 in San Diego).
I encourage you to focus on one thing this year in your training plan and race schedule: Find your WHY and race for a purpose!
Pick a cause that is important to you! There are so many great endurance training programs out there!
To learn more about our Team Challenge’s half marathon, triathlon and IRONMAN programs, visit http://www.ccteamchallenge.org or check us out on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/teamchallengeccfa/.
TOGETHER WE CELEBRATE EACH HARD HILL CLIMB, EACH HOSPITAL VISIT, EVERY COLD OPEN WATER SWIM, OUR TRIATHLON BREAKTHROUGHS, STORIES OF REMISSION, REACHING OUR PERSONAL FUNDRAISING GOALS, RACE FINISHES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A FAMILY.

Many athletes often have to do their training indoors, at different times of the year. Sometimes because it is too cold and snowy,
or other times too hot and humid, or even rainy and dangerous. Ask an athlete if they would prefer to workout outdoors or indoors, and you’ll be hard pressed to fi nd someone say in-doors. Few things are better than being outside and enjoying the wind in your face.
But indoor workouts can be an incredibly powerful training tool. A few of the benefi ts: You can simulate hot and muggy conditions, you can hold an intensity or pace without
TrainingPlacedistraction, you can better focus on technique, and, of course, there is no stopping at street-lights and crossings.
To get the most out of your indoor work-outs—and avoid the boredom of a steady state of training—take the opportunity to make sure the training meets the goals of your workout. Every workout you do should consistent of three goals:
Specifi c physiological adaptation. This is simply trying to gain the fi tness you need specifi cally to get better in order to meet the goals for your main events.
Technical skill-building. This involves learning how to move profi ciently with proper technique, practicing your technique with an attention to detail, and ultimately perform-ing your technique perfectly. For example, swimmers must think about their arm stroke technique and cyclists must pay attention to their pedal stroke. Likewise, runners need to pay attention to their overall form, such as body position and foot strike.
Mental focus development. When you race, you have to be mentally engaged in what you’re doing. This process means push-ing yourself through discomfort and fi nding
comfort within the intensity—all while moving profi ciently.
Most athletes focus just on the fi rst goal, the physiological adaptation of fi tness. But instead of mundane, steady efforts in indoor workouts, use the advantages of a lack of distractions and stopping to focus on the latter two goals of technical skill-building and mental focus development. Indoor training can enable you to quickly see what small changes in your technique can do to your speed, power or performance. Since these are measurable while on a treadmill, you can readily see that a change in cadence can lead to faster a pace or higher watts. Furthermore, being able to focus without the distractions of hazards or weather allows you to fi ne tune your mental focus during harder efforts. You are also able to have higher-intensity workouts—and shorter ones as well.
So to make your indoor workouts more effective, create better goals for each workout and challenge yourself to meet them within each session. When you are engaged, you perform better; and the sessions tend to go by faster (you are too busy being focused to even notice that the scenery isn’t changing!).
