813-908-1960The Runner’s Running Store

The Running Center is celebrating its 14th year in business. We must thank the many people

who have given us the privilege of serving them. As the owner, in the store on a daily basis, I have found runners, triathletes and walkers to be an outstanding and inspiring group of people to work with. After the events at the Boston Marathon, this group of athletes has exhibited tremendous determination to continue to support their fellow runners and their love for running.

In the 35 + years being involved in the sport of running, I have seen many trends come and go from running shoes to running form to running groups. The Boston Marathon with its rich history is a great example of how running has progressed through the years. Runners from John McDermott, the 1897 winner (2:55:10), to Bill Rogers, 4 time winner, to Geoffrey Mutai, the 2011 winner with a world record time of 2:03:02, have contributed to history in the evolution of road racing. The introduction of women into the BAA marathon contest did not come without a fight. The BAA

AS TIME GOES BY

did come to its senses in 1966, finally allowing women to run the Marathon with Bobbi Gibb winning with a time of 3:21. The women’s record stands at 2:20:43 set in 2002 by Margaret Okayo.

Looking at past photos of the Beantown event, you will see men running in leather shoes with street clothes on. Today the regular Boston Marathon runner wears the latest tech apparel with the most up to date technical shoes. Boston Marathon runners now have to qualify and it has become a race for the nations’ best distance runners. These runners tend to be faster and more efficient than average recreational runners. They train together to push each other for better performance. They also follow programs that keep their mileage and pace consistent, paying attention to injury prevention.

Unfortunate events, like the bombing at this year’s Marathon, will not deter runners from continuing to enjoy the sport we love since it gives us a feeling of freedom and of being alive.

A few weeks have passed since the tragedy that took place at the Boston Marathon Finish Line. Thankfully, the City of Boston and Boston Athletic Association are in the process of returning to normalcy.

Normalcy… so many have been and forever will be impacted by what took place at the Boston Marathon Finish Line. What will normalcy look like for them… for those that were injured… for their families… for themarathon spectators that ran to the side of those that were hurt and did their best to care for and comfort them…for the families of those that lost their lives… for the Boston Police Department… for the businesses along Boyl-ston Street… for the residents of Watertown, MA… for the MIT students… for those marathon runners that had al-ready finished and those that were on their way to finishing… for the joy that was taken away from them… thatinnocent joy and exuberance that for some, was to be a once in a lifetime feeling… the feeling that can onlycome with crossing the Finish Line of the BAA Boston Marathon.

What will normalcy look like for those of us that watched on television as the tragedy unfolded? What will normalcy look like for the thousands of running events that annually, take place in the United Statesand abroad?

What happened in Boston at 2:50 p.m. on Patriot’s Day, April 15th, will forever impact all of us and the sport of running.

Running is like no other sport. To take part, all that’s needed is a suitable pair of shoes and a positive attitude. Though elites compete for big money in the most famous of running events, average athletes and folks of all ages, backgrounds and sizes are behind them, and on the course running and walking the very same race.

Then there are the tens of thousands of family members and friends who pack along the courses to clap fortheir loved ones. We also can’t forget about the volunteers that give of themselves for others, or the locals whostand outside their houses to shout encouraging words to people that in most cases, they've never met.

It is difficult to know how to react to the events that took place at the Boston Marathon. There is one thinghowever, that is certain. Terrorism only works if it makes people afraid to live and fully enjoy their lives.

We…you, the Gasparilla Distance Classic Association and Tampa Bay community have an obligation not to letthat happen. We must continue to live our lives and yes, RUN...WALK. If we do, our actions will show the bad guysand others like them that we are stronger than they are. In the coming weeks, many Boston Marathon Memorial Runs and local running events will be taking place in the Tampa Bay area. Please, put on a suitable pairof shoes and with a positive attitude, get out there, enjoy the beauty that surrounds us… RUN... WALK.

Mission Statement:  To promote camaraderie, effectiveness, unity, and professionalism among road/triathlon/adventure race directors in the Tampa Bay Community as it relates to events, participants, and the local communities; further,

to adhere to the highest standards of race direction and race participant management.

Dear Race Directors, Organizers and Participants,  A number of local race organizers, along with Florida Race Place Magazine, would like to inform you of the newly organized Tampa Bay Race Council.    For a number of years there has been an identified need for the enhanced coordination of local race events that will better meet the needs of race organizers and participants.  The challenge of having five 5K races on one Saturday and then two half marathons on another day are but two examples of why race directors are feeling the need to come together at this time.  Now more than ever before there is a need to gain control over the huge upsurge of walk, run, adventure and triathlon events which are inundating our area.  Coordinating a more user friendly and comprehensive event calendar is just one aspect of what the race directors hope to improve upon.   Below are but a few examples of what the Race Council and Florida Race Place Magazine wish to accomplish in the hope of better serving our Tampa Bay race community:                                                    * Involve all race directors and organizers who are both experienced and new       to join a council to represent their common interests and concerns and to       share their expertise.   Tampa Bay includes:  Tampa, Clearwater,     St.Petersburg, and all surrounding towns nearby * Employ shared marketing among all race directors in the Tampa Bay Area.  * Develop a fair and consistent pricing structure.  * Share volunteer resources such that events have the necessary course     marshals, water stop aid stations, finish line, etc. * Make available training clinics established to help participants better train and     have positive experiences with the race event.

* Share food and extra amenities from one race event and give to another race        director * As an organized and established council, work with the various municipalities     to help facilitate our race events within the desired location * Establish definite parameters race directors should follow before planning their    event date; such as but not limited to: proximity of miles to a similar distance     event  Sincerely, Lynn Gray Moderator/founder:   Tampa Bay Race Council begun‐2/13  For more information:   contact:  Lynn Gray – [email protected], 813‐453‐7885 for more information

KNOWING YOUR CHILD’S GROWING FEETGene Ulishney, BS HPE, C.Ped., LMT

Adult feet are not only a reflection of how they have been treated in adult life, but also what they experi-enced during their early years of development.

Although a number of foot problems are congenital, most infants are born with normal feet. Some de-velop abnormalities during early childhood. Most, if caught early enough, will respond to conservative treatment and may eliminate future discomfort, weakness, growth issues and appearance problems.

Many parents worry because their young child’s feet appear to be flat. This is normal during their first two years and is due to excess fatty pads, especially in the arch area, weak muscle tone and loose ankle ligaments. It is recommended that children go (safely) barefoot, preferably on soft surfaces, as much as possible to help strengthen feet and ankles. Of note, if you notice excessive in-toeing or out-toeing during this time period, or abnormally shaped toes or feet in general, a pediatrician and/or podiatrist should probably be consulted for an assessment. Some in-toeing or out-toeing through age five is considered normal as a child develops strength, pos-ture, coordination and balance. Beginning at about age three the arches will begin to be noticeable and by around age five should be fully developed. If no arch appears, it will probably remain flat through adulthood. Again, a podiatrist may be able to offer a more positive outcome. Ingrown toenails, bun-ions, foot stiffness, pain while walking or running, limping, prolonged toe-walking or sudden change in gait are problems that should also be discussed with a professional.

Shoes are fitted much the same as adults, only more often. Because a child’s feet are developing and growing so rapidly, his or her size will typically change every six to eight months. Both length and width should be assessed during each fitting. Shoes that are too tight can hinder proper foot growth, decrease circulation and cause blisters and ingrown toenails. Shoes too lose can cause blistering at the heel, clawing of the toes and possible tripping. A properly fitted shoe should have about a half-thumb’s width at the toe, a pinch of material on top of the forefoot and support enough to help control any inward ankle movement (overpronation). Flat feet do not always correspond to overpronation, especially in kids. Just as in adults, the ankle determines whether a foot overpronates or not.

Today’s running shoes are probably the best all-around shoes of choice for kids. The better ones are light, flexible in the forefoot, supportive in the heel and very breathable. And, as I mentioned above, some even have added support to help counter overpronation. Be sure to seek out a good shoe pro-fessional to help determine the proper footwear needs for your child. Your local running store is one of your best resources.

Additionally, quality socks, orthotics and other supports can be very valuable in proper foot develop-ment as well as the management of acquired juvenile foot and leg problems such as blisters, calluses, corns, plantar warts, bunions, overlapping toes, very high or collapsing arches, heel pain and knee pain. Try not to pass off your child’s complaints as “growing pains” that they will just have to endure and will eventually get over. There may be a solution, simple or not, that can help eliminate years of future misery.

P.S. We are all saddened by the horrific happenings in Boston. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the three who lost their lives. Nothing can replace losses such as these. There were also more than two hundred who are described as injured. Injured is an understatement for many of them. Losing limbs or multiple limbs is life-altering. Dreams have been crushed and lives must take a dif-ferent direction. We can only pray that these individuals, their families and friends, remain strong and find a place in their lives for new and hopefully better dreams.

Tips for Starting Your Training Program Lynn Gray, M.S.  RRCA Running Coach – owner of:  Take…The First Step©Training Studio

"When in doubt, just take the next small step." ~~ Regina Brett

 1)  Training begins with your First Step ‐ the running shoe.  The running shoe is equally important for both the walker and the runner.  A cushioned, stability shoe with plenty of room in the toe box best accommodates the distance walk to runner.  2)  Time on your feet – simply speaking the number one priority with completing a distance event is having the ability to actually cover the distance.  Whether you walk, run, or combine the two movements, duration training is the number one consideration to employ.  3)  Train up gradually.  The rule of thumb for adding time on your feet or miles is the 10% figure.  Add up your minutes or miles each week, and add 10% each week for gradual progression and physical adaptation.  4) Muscular strength counts.  Specific exercises for the legs, arms, and core give both the beginner and seasoned walk to runner an advantage.  Additional strength and good posture adds endurance and economy of movement.   5) Establish a routine – the body and mind welcome routine.  We will mentally and physically be prepared if we know ahead of time what energy and time expenditure will be required with each exercise bout.  6) Have a schedule – training participants in sports are best served by a schedule; or a written model of time/and or miles per day.  The strategic training principle of “hard” training days and “easy” training days are carefully put into a weekly training schedule to avoid the participant becoming over trained and possibly injured.

Page 59: Florida RacePlace

 7) Before injury strikes…  Each walker or runner must follow a stretching regiment to support the elongation and evenness of their major muscle groups; especially in the legs and hips.  Uneven and tight muscles result in overuse injuries, weak muscle compensation, and a gait which compromises even muscle use.  8) Walk before you run!  Participants who begin a walking program need a month or so of gradual physical adaptation on their feet before the full impact of the run.  Likewise, runners need to practice and sometimes must learn to go slow so their body can rest for their faster efforts.  9) Friends do count!  The number one reason why folks begin an exercise program is to become fit; the number one reason they stay in it is because of the camaraderie built into walk to run group events.  Find a friend and build a group of participants of near equal ability and goals.  10) Set fitness goals.  Goal setting is of huge importance when embarking on a new and/or challenging physical fitness journey.  There will be challenging times to delay your fitness goals such as:  work, family, weather, sickness, etc.  Having an actual goal will help you stay on task and remain focused.  11) Improving your time.  After duration or “time on your feet” training has been reached it is wise to add on resistance training.  Resistance training such as hill work and short bouts of faster movement adds to leg economy and will make walking or running easier.  12) Lose body fat.  Give yourself the goal of at least 35 minutes of walk/run movement per outing.  Body fat begins to burn after 35 minutes of steady, aerobic exercise.  Quicker spurts of aerobic movement during your workout will increase the metabolic rate as well.  ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Lynn Gray, M.S., RRCA certified Coach, owner of Take…The First Step, www.FirstStepPrograms.com

We’ve been in the race game for over 30 years. Like us the brand of Chip Timing equipment we use was first on the scene and considered by most to be the best. We use ChampionChip for triathlons and other sports where a foot or ankle worn system is appropriate. For most running races we use MyLaps which is the chip-in-the bib technology and uses a disposable device attached to the back of the runner’s number. MyLaps was specifically created for use with chip-in-the-bib where the chip is worn above the waist and hence has a better reliability than other such systems.

Having so much experience enables us to provide expert consultation on just about any race re-lated matter. We’ve seen every kind of mistake made by race organizations and have often been there to avert disaster. Having been involved in the inner workings of the sports’ governing bodies over the years, we know the rules. Having competed at an award winning level, we know the game from the ath-lete’s viewpoint.

Although, these days, our primary function is data management, timing and scoring we can pro-vide needed equipment such as finish line archways, fencing, large digital clocks, bike racks, course marking signs, PA systems and more. BTW the 2:08:37 on the clock above was the questionable mara-thon world record until 1981 when Alberto Salazar ran 2:08:13 at New York.

One other very important aspect of our race services is a client’s ability to communicate to our super large database of endurance sport participants via a page on our site and email blasts.

We can handle any size event in Florida.

Are You Prepared for Summer Training?Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, CPed

With the sweltering summer months just about upon us, many runners are planning their yearly taper-ing regimen. But a hardy group of marathon trainers will be just beginning to train for their fall marathons and half marathons. Most early morning or evening runs will include some time in the sun, resulting in the dreaded summer triad – sun (infra-red and ultra-violet rays), heat (temperature) and humidity (moisture). Let’s first address the sun. Infra-red rays are the ones that we feel warming our bare skin or the clothing cover-ing it. The colors we wear make a significant difference. White is best because it reflects the sun’s heat. The darker or deeper the color shade, the more it absorbs and holds onto heat, culminating in the warmest color, black. So, to stay as cool as possible, try to wear white or pastels when the sun is out. This is especially important for tops because they cover a large surface area of the skin. Short colors are a little less important because the surface area is smaller. Even lighter color socks and shoes can make a difference in the amount of heat that the body will try to eliminate. Because the body’s natural heat elimination process is evaporation, the warmer you are the more you will perspire. So, the lighter the colors you wear, the less moisture you will have to deal with to cool your body. This also relates to the type of hat you wear. Overall, the most protective and coolest is a white or light colored mesh with a fairly long bill. It both shades and allows the substantial heat generated from the head to be released. Underneath, the bill should be of a darker color to absorb bright reflec-tions from running surfaces before they get to the eyes. The bill also protects the face from potentially harmful UVA and UVB rays. We cannot feel UVA or UVB rays as they enter the skin. They are most important in the production of Vitamin D, the skin-protecting vitamin. Recent research is showing that it is extremely important in cancer prevention. Now, the dilemma – to sunscreen or not. Today, most sunscreens block both UVA and UVB rays, all but eliminating all important Vitamin D production. This could be one reason that those having used sun-screens all their lives have more of a tendency (from some research) to develop some type of skin cancer. Another could be that some early sunscreens only blocked the UVB (skin burning) rays and not the UVA (skin penetrating) rays, so those not burning stayed in the sun for longer periods. Still others are questioning the chemicals being used in their formulations. All this being said, moderation and some protection is probably warranted. If you are spending a fair amount of time running in the sun, look for tops stickered with a UPF (Uni-versal Protection Factor) 40+, as they offer excellent sun protection on their own. Compare fabrics, as they can vary in weight and breathability. Your local running store is your best resource. Well-designed synthetic fabrics are an extension of the skin. They begin by immediately wicking perspiration to the fabric’s surface and then spreading it out to most efficiently begin the body-cooling, heat-dissipating, evapo-ration process. The idea is that the more you spread the moisture the faster cooling begins and continues. Efficient evaporation means that the body doesn’t have to work as hard pumping blood to the skin’s surface to cool itself. Although heat can slow you down somewhat, humidity is what makes the air seem thick and hard to breathe – the excess moisture in the air most likely crowds out some of the oxygen entering the lungs. Hypo-thetically, it can also create more air resistance as the body moves through it. You’ve noticed how much more effortlessly running seems on a crisp, cool day. Or, how much farther you can hit a golf ball on the same day. Because your body is working harder during this time of year, summer’s added energy and fluid requirements bring us to a most important question: “How can I keep my energy level up, especially during my long training runs?” This is where energy drinks and energy foods become most important. Because your energy needs are so high to keep you moving efficiently and your fluid needs to keep you from overheating, continuous replen-ishment is absolutely necessary. Don’t underestimate the nutrients and electrolytes that you are using up and sweating out, the energy that you are expending and the water loss that you are experiencing, especially during these hot and humid summer months. High-tech, quick release nutrition foods help to quickly and efficiently replenish what you are expending. Your local running store can recommend an energy food regimen for you to help keep you moving with reduced fatigue, minimal cramping, quicker recovery time and less chance of heat complications. Chance of injury can also be reduced from impaired performance due to low energy levels. How you personally address the summer’s stronger sun, higher heat and humidity, as well as your fluid and energy needs, will determine whether you get the bear or the bear gets you. Get the bear.
