Question 24Needs Grading
If you where transported 50 years into the future what do you
think the power grid in the US would look like? Explain your
reasoning.
Selected Answer:If i were transported 50 years into the future,
I think the power grid in the US would be very eco-friendly. This
is because we have already began to change everything to make it
more "green", conserving energy and saving the environment.
Correct Answer:When a student asked our speaker this question
during the FUTURES event on the main campus - he was told that is
classified information.
I think you probably know as much as anyone what it will be
like, but honestly I think there will be no grid except on the
local level. The grid loses more electricity than it transports, so
I hope we figure this one out. No answer is counted incorrect as
long as you explain your answer with clear examples and
justification in an orderly and complete way so that it is
understood as to what you are proposing.
Question 1Needs Grading
Think about the Three Mile Island nuclear plant accident. The
news media and many other nuclear energy supporters have said
incident at Three Mile Island was not an example of nuclear
facility failure. They say the incident shows how well our nuclear
plants in the US work. Using the example of Three Mile Island take
a position - do you support expansion of nuclear facilities in the
US or do you want the expansion halted. Tell me where you stand and
why using the Three Mile Island accident as your example.
(It is on page 222 of your book if you need a reference for
review.)
Selected Answer:Personally, I do not support the expansion of
nuclear facilities in the US. This is because they are very toxic
and can be harmful to the air, thus harming many people.
Correct Answer:Oppose - well it costs too much to get
electricity from nuclear energy - mining, wastes, and of course
building and operating and eventually decommissioning are not
included in the true cost of the power plant and the electricity
generated. You should cite the amount of money needed to
decommission and the overall emergency created by the accident to
support this stand.
Support - the Three Mile Island incident did not expose people
to harm, the safety systems worked, if you look at the other energy
sources mining of resources, installation and clean up a nuclear
plant has a much greater lifetime than a photovoltaic panel. Over
the lifetime a nuclear reactor creates more energy in less time
with fewer resources. The waste could be recycled but our
government does not allow such reuse of nuclear materials.
