Hip hop dance
Students will be exploring hip hop culture including dance and learn some hip hop dance moves. Begin with a partner brainstorm asking students to write down what they know about hip hop culture then record any questions they have or information they would like to know more about. Ask students to research the following:
When did hip hop culture emerge?
Where was it created?
What are the elements of hip hop culture?
Why is identity and expression important in hip hop dance?
Learn the basics of hip hop dance Three of the most well known elements of hip hop dance are breaking, locking and popping. Use the internet to research what these elements look like when they are being performed. Students will now explore some more hip hop dance moves so they can create their own short hip hop dance. These YouTube clips demonstrate some simple hip hop dance moves students can practise. There are more in the series for students to try.
When students have practised some dance moves they can have a go at coming up with their own dance (individually or in pairs). If students feel confident, they can perform their dance to the class or a larger audience.
