QUESTION 1 In what ways does your media product use, challenge or develop forms and conventions of real media products?

WHAT CONVENTIONS HAVE I USED, CHALLENGED OR DEVELOPED? Before I began to construct my media product I conducted research into my artist and found the conventions which they used in their media products. Below is a complete list of conventions which I used, challenged or developed.

ARTIST (ICONA POP) CONVENTIONS

Icona pop are consistent throughout their music videos; there lyrics are usually about friendship and connote happiness.

There is always close ups of the artists.

Usually wearing very modern and stylish attire, mainly black clothing.

Usually very modern and high end location however there is rare occurrences of remote locations. For instance in the ‘Girlfriend’ music video.

Bright lighting, throughout Icona Pop’s music videos there is regularly bright or high tech lighting.

Shapes throughout their album art, Icona pop are commonly known for using shapes in their album art work.

The live performance element is another convention which Icona pop use in their music videos,

Throughout my music video I have used the following conventions

-Friendship

-Close ups

-Happy mood

-Visuals

-Bright Colours

-Shapes

EXAMPLESSHAPES, I used the convention of shapes into the music video by layering the footage and changing the transparency of the footage throughout the music video.

CLOSE UPS, I used the convention of close ups throughout the music video by adding different close ups of different people which reappear throughout the rest of the music video.

FRIENDSHIP, I used the convention of friendship throughout the music video by adding lots of footage which connoted friendship.

These are all example of the conventions which I have used/conformed to throughout the music video. I will discuss more about conforming later.

CONFORMING Throughout the music video myself and Grace have conformed to a lot of conventions some of which are Andrew Goodwin's conventions. For instance,

The close up convention is one of Andrew Goodwin's conventions which myself and grace definitely conformed too.

Intertextual References is another Andrew Goodwin convention which I conformed too.

In the music video we linked the lyrics to the footage in the music video, during the lyric analysis I realised that the lyrics connote friendship therefore we made friendship a theme in the music video and made it a convention which we conformed too.

EXAMPLES

BRIGHT COLOURS, This is the original image which we used in our magazine advert and definitely encloses bright colours.

SHAPES, This is the front cover of the Digipak and this encloses shapes which is common in Icona Pops previous album art and is a convention which we used.

HAPPY MOOD AND FRIENDSHIPAnother convention which we used in our ancillaries is the Happy Mood convention, the image in the magazine advert has an image which connoted happiness and friendship. The Digipak also connotes friendship as it includes images of friends at a festival which also creates intertextual references to our music video and the lyrics of the song.

SHAPES, This is a convention which has been used throughout all of the media products and was especially used repeatedly throughout my ancillaries. It was used 10 times throughout the Digipak.

WHICH CONVENTIONS DID I DEVELOP THROUGHOUT MY MEDIA PRODUCT(S)?

I only developed on one of the conventions which was used in my media product(s), the convention was the live performance element.

Although myself and Grace did use the live performance element it was not of our artist therefore we developed this convention.

The live performance was of example and not of Icona Pop however it remains in the music video as it continued to create a happy mood throughout the video which is a convention that has been used throughout the rest of the media product(s).

EXAMPLES

The live performance re-occurs throughout the music video. This was another one of Andrew Goodwin's conventions however we did not just use it in our music video we developed it to fit our own music video. Therefore we did not conform to this convention alike the others used throughout the media product(s).
