Preliminary Task

Our preliminary task wasn’t as we hoped for, this was mainly due to our little understanding regarding camera shots, and editing. However, throughout our production I have learnt many new skills as opposed to when I was creating my preliminary task which allowed me to be more creative while creating our thriller.

Blank space was an issue we encountered, we didn’t focus fully on mise-en-scene and noticed this when we watched back our preliminary Task. Therefore, we focused wholly on mise-en-scene and the importance of it within our final production. Therefore learning from previous errors and developing our ideas over time.

Our final product was carefully produced, we selected certain books that would typically be on a therapist’s bookshelf. As previously we didn’t focus on mise-en-scene which caused a fall-back in our preliminary task. Our experience while filming our preliminary task taught us to focus carefully on particular aspects of our final product, such as mise-en-scene and lighting.

Lighting was a key issue in our preliminary Task, we didn’t plan efficiently which resulted to us filming against light which wasn’t a sensible decision. Many scenes within our final production were outside, so we relied wholly upon natural light. This was a slight issue as typically we wanted a dark atmosphere however, it was uncontrollable.

Final task. Preliminary task.

Our preliminary task was filmed in a school. This inspired us to develop a plotline which centres around a certain profession as it would be less difficult to construct. Therefore, developing creativity in a difficult location.

Equipment such as computers, books and offices were easy to access. Filming in a school didn’t drawback our creativity, working with what we had access to was challenging yet enjoyable.

We found it rather difficult editing our preliminary task however learnt how to edit, include visual effects and tune our music while creating our final product.

By the end of editing our preliminary task, we has a brief idea of how to use iMovie. However, by the end of producing our production we fully understood how to apply transitions and edit our scenes, split scenes and generally be more confident with using iMovie.

Camera rules learnt throughout producing both preliminary and final product.

Use zoom as little as possible - The pictures quality suffered, but also the camera footage will be much shakier, and look amateur. This is something which we did in our preliminary and learnt not to in our final product.

Shoot with the light not against it. In our preliminary task our characters were dark, and it was hard to identify what was going on. We learnt from this, and filmed outside with sunlight.

Be aware of external sound – If filming in a public place, we learnt to be aware that sound will be recorded, and may ruin our production. We learnt how to decrease background noise on iMovie. http://

Shots learnt while filming

Long shotAll or nearly all of the standing person; large parts of a building

shows a large scale action; shows whole groups of people; displays large architectural details

Medium shotCharacter shown from waist up; medium-sized architectural details

small groups such as two or three people

Close-upHead and neck of character; objects about the size of the desktop computer fill frame

focus on one character; facial expression very important

Extreme close-upThe frame filled with just part of a character or very small objects

facial features in a character or small objects

Previously, i wasn’t very confident identifying different shots, but throughout filming I learnt a variety of different shots, which we implemented and identified throughout our planning and production. This is clearly shown on the links below.

How I have developed as a producer/media student.

As a producer, I feel that I have acquired many technical skills such as editing and filming, and forming ideas through the use of iMovie. This has increased my assurance as a media student, and as a producer. Learning to adjust to certain situations such as, working in a team and filming in difficult situations, such as outdoors was challenging. However, it enabled me to gain more flexibility and confidence. I developed more creative ideas, and planned more efficiently, our group set our a clear timetable with when we will film and edit certain shots.

Creative progression over time..

Learnt how to edit, add transitions and use iMovie confidently.

Learning to adjust to difficult situations. Such as, filming in natural light and working in a team,

More confidence using camera equipment.

Learnt to focus on blunders which occurred while filming our preliminary task.

Progressed by developing creative ideas throughout filming our preliminary task and final product. Challenged locations, and tried new

ideas.
