QLA NEWSLETTER February 2011
Librarian’s Corner
2
Facebook, Twitter, Multiply, MySpace,
Flickr and more. These networking sites
are now getting into the world of the
academe. And being specific, in the world
of library development. Truly, these sites will be of great
help in the development and improvement of library usage
and management.
Librarians, like us, belongs to the modern day of
computer and the World Wide Web or in another term the
“Web 2.0 World”. This fact gave birth to the new name of
librarians from being a traditional librarian to being a
Librarian 2.0. It is true that whether we like it or not,
influence of the modern websites is coming on their way to
invade our libraries. Social Networking Sites (SNS) and
computers on many ways can be of great help to us for these
some reasons: (1) over the past few years, there has been a
huge focus on libraries and social media; (2) technology and
social media affect the tasks and work of a librarian;(3) social
networking sites allow exchanging and publishing of
comments, questions, and concerns in an ongoing and
semi-formal environment; and (4) majority of researchers
will soon be accessing websites through their mobile
devices.
In this modern world, every field, profession and
organization needs an effective media in order to deliver
their goals, aims and missions. A successful organization
must recognize the opportunities that social networking sites
offer than merely reacting on the way its members or
constituents use them.
Whatever side comments are there regarding social
media, there are still growing and important roles of these
sites most importantly in the library usage and development.
To this point, a call for a geared Librarian 2.0 is badly
needed.
Modern Era calls for change…. And Librarian 2.0 is
one of its answers. And if we’ve got passion to share, then,
social networking sites will welcome you, and your library,
with open arms.

DIGITAL NATIVES AND DIGITAL MIGRANTS:
What Services can Librarians offer them?
Our time today in the modern Librarianship
is very demanding. Our work environment, the
computer and technology that sprouted is now
becoming luxurious for the digital natives yet a
major constraint for the digital migrants. Digital
natives are born during the digital age or after the
introduction of technology. They are much
identified with technology and its concepts. Digital
migrants are individuals who were born before the
existence of digital technology and just adopted it
to some extent LATER in their lives.
Our users consist of two divides, the digital
natives who are ardent and enthusiastic with
technology and the digital migrants who tries to
cope with the change technology has brought. As
a librarian, must we deal with them. We never can
hide ourselves from them rather it is our service
that they need and that we must provide. There are
lots of fora and seminars where we can attend to be
equipped with enough knowledge and skills and
answer the changing needs of our users as we
face the outbreak of technology. There is no need
to consider technology as a threat but rather an
opportunity and means to offer more services to
our clients. Our profession definitely has emerged
into greater heights. We must cope with the change
so we could offer services which are up to date and
relevant. It is an inkling of marvelous break for us
librarians to prove what we know and what we can
offer as information gathering becomes digital. As
part of Manuel S. Enverga University Libraries, I
am glad that we have a library
sufficient to the needs of our
users. The newest part of our
service is the so called Expanded
Academic ASAP.
This is something that
everyone must utilize. Electronic
journals for digital natives and
migrants. Geraldine G. Mallo, RL
