QA1 Cable Supports QA1
Cable SupportsGeneral Information
Cable Supports are used to support cablesin vertical raceways or risers. Cables, whenthey are supported, relieve the strain thatwould be placed on the interior of panels orother devices to which the cables are con-nected. Properly designed cable supportsmust not only be capable of supporting agiven weight of cable with a good margin ofsafety but must also support the cable with-out damaging the insulation or excessivelyreducing the amount of insulation over theconductor in the area where the cable issupported. O-Z/Gedney has been furnishingCable Supports to the electrical industry forover 75 years that meet these requirements.
The National Electrical Code forCable Supports reads as follows:Section 300-19. SupportingConductors in Vertical RacewaysA) Spacing Intervals - Maximum.Conductors in vertical raceways shall besupported. One cable support shall be pro-vided at the top of the vertical raceway oras close to the top as practical, plus a sup-port for each additional interval of spacingas specified in Table 300-19(a).

Cable SupportsGeneral Information
Two basic types of cable supports areoffered for use with non-armored cable. They both utilize the pOZi-grip® WedgingPlug. pOZi-grip® is a unique manufacturingtechnique for lining the cable grooves with acoarse grain grit using a high strengthepoxy adhesive. This grit improves theCable Support holding power and does notinjure the jacket or insulation on the cable.Other features of these types and theirapplications are illustrated below.
Cable Supports QA2
One Piece Plug TypeThis type consists of a metal body havingan insulating liner with a knurled andtapered inside surface and a one pieceimpregnated hardwood wedging plug hav-ing a groove for each wire. This type sup-port is recommended for use with all typesof non-armored cables 600 volts or less, asit is the easiest to install, impossible toinstall incorrectly and it provides ventilationof the conduit. This design is used in ourTypes "S" and "D" Cable Supports. Thebasic principles of their assembly are illus-trated below.
1 Screw bodyon the end of theconduit or connec-tor in place of theregular insulatingbushing.
Multiple Segment Plug TypeThis type consists of an all metal body hav-ing a tapered inner surface and a canvasbakelite multiple segment wedging plug soconstructed that each cable is supportedbetween grooves in adjacent segments. This construction provides the uniform pres-sure distribution required by the softer typesof insulations frequently used at higher volt-ages. This design is used in no-ventilatingtypes "R," "DR," "W," "C," "K" and "M," andVentilating Compound Types "CMT," and"V." The basic principles of their assemblyare illustrated below.
1 Screw bodyon the end of theconduit or connectorin place of the regu-lar insulating bush-ing.

2 Pull wires andarrange temporarymeans of support.
3 a. Remove allpulling compoundfrom wires in thearea where theypass through thecable support,b. Place the plugbetween the wiresas close to the top
of the body as possible. (Where more thanone wire size is involved, care should betaken to locate each in the proper groove.)
4 Tap the plug firmlyinto the support body.
3 a. Remove allpulling compoundfrom wires in thearea where theypass through thecable support,b. Place the seg-ments of the plugaround the wires.Where more than
two segments are involved the top of eachplug segment has numbers at each endand it is important that these are paired withthe corresponding numbers on the adjacentplug segments.
4 Drive the plugsegments evenlyand hard into thesupport body.
