Hi Everybody, Thank you to David Paul and our Dad’s Club for the TLC they gave our 40-acre site this Saturday! Nearly 20 Dads came out – armed with trimmers and enthusiasm – to freshen the grounds before work begins on our new playgrounds, which should be built in the next month or so…! The Dad’s Club also weeded and fed our five dozen orange trees, after our 5 th grade classes picked all the oranges and our new Food Service Manager Jessica Peto sliced and provided the oranges during lunch periods to all our children. Thank you everybody for all you do to support our learning community! We are working hard to help our outsides match the extraordinary work going inside our classrooms. I hope your families enjoy holidays filled with warm temperatures and the warmth of family and friends gathered around! Caty Van Housen Upcoming Events Principal’s Message

get to host a real baby alligator during second semester…
January 23, 2017, is the 100th day of school. We are excited to roll out our 100th day service-learning project –“Pennies for Pets!” Students are invited to bring in loose change during the week beginning Monday, January 23rd. Teachers will host classroom-based learning opportunities with monies collected. Donations are voluntary, and all students will participate in classroom activities. If you would like to share in the fun at home, help your child count and sort 100 pennies/coins! To add to the fun, both buildings will host a “pet bulletin board,” with pictures posted in a central location so all students can share a photograph of a beloved animal. Please send in copies only, no originals. A final dollar amount will be announced the following week, and all proceeds will be donated to the Humane Society. (Right from top: Ms. Brubaker’s Koda; Ms. Garlanger’s Lily; and Ms. Van Housen’s Ping.)

JANUARY MENU ST JOHNS COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT ELEMENTARY
We are calling Wednesday, January 25th, our CYBER WEDNESDAY, when we will educate our students, staff and parents about Cyber Safety!
Parents, please join us from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Rawlings cafeteria for an informative presentation by St. Johns Sherriff’s Lieutenant Mike Strausbaugh. He will cover protecting your children in: chat rooms, online video games, file sharing, cell phone applications and social networking. He will share factual information about the Internet, warning signs and how to establish family guidelines. Ms. Leslie Shugart from our school district’s Students Services Department will also be in attendance.
Our students will hear a Cyber Safety presentation that same morning. Ms. Shugart will present age-appropriate materials to our K-2nd grade students. Deputy Keith Schifferwill host the 3rd-5th grade students. The same material will be shared at our Wed. Staff Meeting so we can all be on the same page with keeping our students safe.
The new attendance link is up and running on thePVPV/Rawlings website: www.pvmkr.stjohns.k12.fl.us.
It’s no longer necessary to call the front office to report your child’s absence. Parents may now email the school by clicking
the link. Please include your student’s name, teacher, and reason for absence.
When we come back from holiday break, we will turn the corner toward spring standardized testing. Of course, learning in our classrooms is about more than test-taking; we foster hands-on and engaging lessons. But we also want to keep our parents informed about upcoming test dates, which begin as early as February for 4th and 5th grade students who take the FSA Writing Test. Language Arts and Math testing will take place at the end of March and beginning of April. Finally, 5th grade students will take the Science test the beginning of May.
Testing formats will include both paper-based and computer-based platforms. Our 3rd grade classes will take a paper-based English Language Arts test and a computer-based Math test. In 4th and 5th Grade, our students will be taking the paper-based Writing test and computer-based English Language Arts and Math tests. Only 5th grade will take the FCAT Science test, which is a paper-based test.
Although the district has not published the exact dates for testing, we do have the state-released testing windows. Please keep these in mind as you schedule family holidays and events.
