With all apologies to my “ice bucket challenge” friends - and while it’s great to see so much money being raised for ALS - i’d like to challenge all my FB people to check out this page and help out a friend if you can.

For those of you who don’t know, Priya Ray is a musician/artist who played in the band Kreamy ‘Lectric Santa down here in the 90’s. in 1999 she had a tragic accident at a gig resulting in a severe spinal injury which has left her wheelchair bound. Priya is an amazing person, continuing to perform with her band, make art,

organize benefits and basically not letting her disability define her.

When our friend Dan Hosker suffered his own terrible accident and lay in a coma (as Priya had for a month), she reached out to me for updates and desperately wanted to speak to him when he regained consciousness, to help him and guide him along a path of recovery and living with a disability she knew all too well. unfortunately that wasn’t to be, but I’ll never forget her calm spirit and words of hope in such a bleak time.

A handicap-accessible van would be a real lifeline for Priya, helping her to regain some of the independence she’s lost.

PRIYA VAN CHALLENGE

When you find yourself bathed in the lush synth wash of Future Island’s currently inescapable track, “Seasons (Waiting On You),” at a grocery store or whilst paying for some of those burnt beans at Starbucks, you probably aren’t considering the song’s lineage. No, we’d wager you’re probably just singing-along in your head, or maybe contemplating those crazy dance moves the band’s frontman, Samuel Herring, did on Letterman to help earn the band it’s fleeting bit of the blogosphere’s attention.

However, if you’re an obsessive music dork like us, there is a chance you’re considering the resurgence of synth-pop as the

form of the day -- a resurgence we’re all watching happen before our very eyes with a new breakout artist popping up weekly with ear worms fueled by obscure oscillators and alternative keys. Subsequently, you might find yourself pondering how much better the synth-pop of the ‘80s was than what we’re dealing with at present. For example: Erasure.

Erasure -- also known as the holy union of Andy Bell and Vince Clarke that occurred following Clarke’s departure from a primordial Depeche Mode -- is perhaps the most criminally under-appreciated team of pop-minded synth smashers to come out of the ‘80s. Evidence enough is the material on the band’s breakthrough 1987 LP, The Circus, an album held in only the highest regard by the savviest fans of the period, and an album that boasted at least 3 tracks that might have been perennial favorites had they enjoyed the good fortune to be featured in the right ‘80s blockbuster (a la Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark’s “Don’t You Forget About Me” or Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away”). Truth be told, an alternate reality in which every millennial with cable might know all of the lyrics to “Don’t Dance” or “Victim of Love” is not that far-fetched.

Lucky for you, Erasure is still touring and will be giving you the opportunity to make up for lost time and/or reacquaint yourself with their music with a performance at Miami Beach’s stately Fillmore on September 12.

For those of you that haven’t been fortunate enough to enjoy a nostalgic act of this caliber in South Florida -- home to maybe the most reverent dance music community in the country -- the show will undoubtedly be a blast, if for the people watching alone. ~ David Von Bader

ERASURE

In a sea of independent record labels pimping new rock bands, Los Angeles-based Lolipop Records is quickly on its way to heavy-hitter status. At a mere four years old, the label is responsible for a disarmingly solid catalog of vintage-twinged garage, psych, and punk records, all produced by artists with the sonic clout to hang with any of the big acts currently championing the garage/psych resurgence. Want to be ahead of the game? Want to make your hip friends vibing out to Mikal Cronin records feel mainstream? Then you’d do well to pay attention to what Lolipop is putting out.

How exactly does one get acquainted with a relatively obscure label from the other side of the country’s output? Well, the internet.

However, Lolipop is going to do you one better by putting some of its charges on the road and sending them all the way to South Florida to perform. So, for those of you still bitching about the lack of rad touring shows South Floridians enjoy, or simply looking for some exciting new (old style) sounds, it’s time to look alive, because the Lolipop Adventure Tour 2014 is quickly approaching our shores.

The tour, which could use a bit of financial help via this Indiegogo fundraiser, will bring Mr. Elevator and the Brain Hotel, Corners, Froth, and Wyatt Blair to South Florida.

While some of you may be familiar with Froth’s brand of floating psychedelia from the band’s trek through the 561 down to the 305 this past May, the band was sadly missing its omnichordist, though they will hopefully have that element intact for this jaunt.

The other groups on the tour represent all that is good in the new wave of retro-rock: Mr. Elevator and the Brain Hotel’s 2013 release, Nico and her Psychedelic Subconscious, is an absolute lo-fidelity masterpiece of thumping drums, transistor organ, and tripped-out vocals that would give any graduate of ‘69 a flashback. Corner’s long player, Beyond Way, is another gem that sparkles through a hazy production aesthetic like a bit of Native American jewelry in the sun amidst a desert wandering peyote-fueled soul search. Wyatt Blair’s music sounds like what might have happened if Marc Bolan fronted the New York Dolls. Why would you miss out on any of that? Because you’re a stick in the mud, that’s why.

The tour enters South Florida’s balmy embrace with a PureHoney Presents date scheduled at West Palm Beach’s Respectable Street Cafe’ on September 13 and another round a few counties south at Gramps on the 14th. This is your opportunity to finally be that guy/girl that can say you saw these bands when they were small when they blast off in a few years! ~ David Von Bader

Since the last time Ty Segall performed in Miami, four years ago, the prolific low-fi indie rocker has refined his retro-psyche-rock-infused garage sound with more dynamic elements. In 2011, with Goodbye Bread, he revealed he can do something beyond aggressive, distorted electric-guitar-driven songs. Lest anyone think he went too soft, he released Twins in 2012. He credited Black Sabbath as inspiration. But then, the next year, he gave us Sleeper, an album of only acoustic guitar ballads. This doesn’t include two other full-lengths and his work with Fuzz.

Over the past few years, Segall has proved himself a hard-working musician who has hardly stopped his creative output, allowing his sound to evolve without pushing it. That said, when Miami finally sees Segall’s return, it will be on the heels of his 12th full-length release as a solo artist in six years: Manipulator, released only at the end of last month, once again on Drag City Records. PureHoney was granted a sneak peak to help prepare audiences for Segall’s next step in his evolution.

Known for his rollicking guitar work, Segall shows some audacity by opening Manipulator with dual organs. Fear not, the provocation doesn’t last long, as the song closes with the familiar guitar skronk soloing Segall is best known for. However, the stage has been set for a musician ready to explore new ground while staying true to his psyche-rock roots, and the record is a dynamic affair that also features driving acoustic guitar strums, strings and even some whispering. No one should fear any lack of emphasis on guitar work, however. Even with the new material, his visit to Miami should be as rocking as any Segall fan would expect. Virtually every track on Manipulator features Segall’s signature stuttering guitar solos that sometimes rage toward heights that one-up one phrase after another. Get ready to be rocked in the most classic sense any young musician working today can offer. Delray Beach continues to entertain an annual craft fair with a little edge.

Featuring items well outside the usual tourist-town realm of resort wear flocked in flamingos and palm trees (that us locals worry is quickly swallowing up our town) Stitch Rock is proudly coming into its eighth year this October. Festival host and originator Amanda Linton enthusiastically reports there will be “mediums all across the board, just the way we like it.” She says, “This year will include geeky home deco items, tons of handmade jewelry, adorable stuffed plushies, ceramic flower planters, handmade boxer briefs, natural bath & body goodies, vintage finds, hot rod paintings, pin up photography, and much more!”

Stitch Rock will be taking over Delray’s iconic Old School Square, where Amanda has built a home for the event over the past seven years, inside the “cozy nostalgic feel of the vintage gym.” Amanda has conjured crafters out of the woodwork of the South Florida local scene through her in-house marketing and expert branding of the event over the years. “I’m big on branding while trying to keep the look fresh and current” says Amanda. “We do most of

the promo in house,” (which she clarifies means, quite literally, her own home), “but for the artwork we commission one of our favorite artists to create the artwork based on a loose concept I come up with. Every year they blow me away with the final product and I just want to plaster it everywhere!” Make sure you check out this year’s artwork by Danny Brito, a Stitch Rock family favorite. Danny was born and raised in Miami and currently lives and works from a small home/studio space in Lauderdale. Amanda promises the return of many of the Stitch Rock veterans as well as the annual influx of the “newbies”. Over the years and through the thousands of applications, Amanda gives credit for the success of her event to “the consistency of the quality of vendors and goods for sale.” When she put together the event eight years ago she wanted a stand out show - and that’s what she’s kept going strong. Amanda says, “I wanted the name to stand out, not just ‘bla bla craft show’. I thought, what do you say when you see something you love?... ‘THAT ROCKS!’”

STITCH ROCK

In some circles, Belle and Sebastian is hated for the same reasons it’s loved, but those aren’t the circles I’d want to hang in. Since their inception, the Glasglow indie rockers have, perhaps more than any artist since Morrissey, personified sonic feyness—they make music for the bullied, the outcast, the sensitive bedroom poets and milquetoast

asthmatics. They’ve always been the anti-cock-rock, and thus an easy target for shallow ridicule. In Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom, the character of Joey, a budding college neocon who probably listens to Creed and Godsmack, comments on his older sister’s “intolerable Belle and Sebastian, [cranked up] to club-level volumes.”

But just as the boldness and muscularity of Morrissey’s sound belies his own stereotype, so too does Belle and Sebastian continue to resist its image of bookish winsomeness. Bandleader Stuart Murdoch once was an amateur boxer, and he remains a dedicated middle-distance runner. As biographer Paul Whitelaw points out in Just a Modern Rock Story, the group’s enduring “Stars of Track and Field” is not supposed to be taken ironically: “Despite the lazy journalistic cliché, the members of Belle and Sebastian have little in common with the exaggeratedly sensitive image which has dogged them.”

In fact, the more you dig into the group’s eight-album archive and copious EPs and B-sides, the more that impression melts away under the sardonic humor and slyly confrontational lyrics. The first few times Murdoch utters the word “fuck” amid the orchestral flourishes of B&S’s baroque pop elegance, it sounds anomalous; keep listening, and you’ll find that ribald snarkiness is ingrained into the group’s DNA: “I could kill you, sure,” and “step into my office, baby” and “the referee gives us fuck all.” They even wrote an instrumental titled “Fuck This Shit.”

As Belle and Sebastian has matured into the 21st century, it has further expanded on its earliest referential benchmarks like Nick Drake and The Left Banke, embracing a immediately infectious retro aesthetic that includes an unabashed admiration for Thin Lizzy. The hits on 2010’s Belle and Sebastian Write About Love sound like lost ‘70s chart-toppers, with all the vintage spacey effects and none of the cheese. If not as profound as the material on its first three albums, it’s a lot more fun to sing along to.

And did I mention they’re a wonderful live act? Incidentally, Belle & Sebastian is the first band I ever drove out of Florida to see, at a sold-out show in Atlanta in 2002. Belle and Sebastian

Washed Out transforms synth pop and heavy base into weightless energy that becomes an escape from reality. This is the kind of music to take on a road trip, tracks to unwind to after a long day; where feelings of letting go occur naturally.

Solo artist Ernest Greene goes by stage name Washed Out. Before entering the music scene, Greene graduated with a Master’s degree in Library and Informational Science. When finding little luck in his hunt for work he began focusing on other talents. Greene spent hours alone at his parent’s house in his bedroom with a synthesizer and headphones. An appreciation for rap and experimenting with different styles of music would inspire him to

make an assortment of tracks. The Georgia based artist would no longer remain an undiscovered gem, after social media users discovered Washed Out’s recordings on Myspace. This was just the beginning of what would blossom a creative hobby into a professional career.

Washed Out’s 2009 album Life of Leisure is contagious. This album’s remarkable sound and catchy beats make it hard for someone to walk away without feeling completely mesmerized. Feel it All Around is a track off the spellbinding album that immediately grips the attention of everyone in the room. The track is also used as the theme song on Portlandia. Other albums released include 2011’s Within and Without and most recent Paracosm, making its debut in 2013. Washed Out’s Paracosm shines bright with new lyrics of optimism mixed with dream pop to build a feeling of floating and discovery.

Washed Out instantaneously grew into popularity among listeners defining what many refer to as genre Chillwave. This genre identifies the use of synthesizing, looping, and sampling music with a combination of heavy vocals and 80s retro music. Other groups like indie electronic artists Toro Y Moi and Neon Indian also fall under this genre of music.

Ernest Greene lives in Athens, Georgia and continues to work alone with his headphones and synthesizer to bring new ideas to life. Check out the dynamic experience of synth pop for yourself.
