DEATH TO THE SUN IV THE ENDAutumnal music festival Death to the Sun, named to commemorate summer’s end, has been an annual, free event for the past three years and a showcase of some of the most diverse bands in the tri-county area. For its architect, local musician Ricardo Guerrero (of This Heart Electric), it’s always a dream lineup featuring upwards of 20 mostly local bands. As Guerrero explains, “I envisioned this party as something universal,

[a party] that celebrated something as ancient and beautiful as the end of season.”

But this year is different. The date has been moved from the end of summer to November 24, when Death to the Sun IV will celebrate the end of the Mayan calendar (or what we’d discovered of it until recently) as well as the end of the festival itself.

“This year we will celebrate the end of an entire age!” says Guerrero.

To employ the cliché, 2012 is not the end of the world -- “The end of the Mayan calendar corresponds to the beginning of a new age, a golden age of thought and global consciousness” -- but since it’s the end of DTTS, we wanted to know why, why would he do such a thing? According to Guerrero, there’s no better time to end it than now. “That way it’ll be a bold imprint in our collective memory. I think it would be great to end with an explosion instead of a fizzle.”

Understandable, but still a major bummer. Nevertheless, Guerrero remains excited: “Maybe it’s time for others to take the torch and run with it.”

SCOTT ARMETTA: FINDS FOG Painter Scott Armetta, whose landscape oil painting “Apoxee Fog” is the featured centerfold of this month’s PureHoney, invites viewers of his Dark Florida landscape collection to be still and see the mysteries of nature in Florida through his eyes. The scene depicted in “Apoxee Fog” caught Armetta’s attention while he was walking the Apoxee Trail in West Palm Beach. The artist, whose early training was in photography, captured the image on film and then translated it to an oil painting in his studio, adding elements to heighten what he calls the scene’s “sinister edge”. A true Florida boy, Armetta graduated from Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in 1994 and has taught there for the last 11 years. He often hears others state an emotion about his home state that he once felt himself: “I’ve got to get out of Florida.” After graduating from Florida Atlantic University, Armetta moved to New York for one year. “When I came back, I realized how much I liked Florida,” he says. He decided to respond to this notion of leaving through his art.

“Listening to them made me think how I could take Florida’s nature and present it with a reason to look at it. I wanted to try to find a way to take those feelings and, through a processed nostalgia, use that as a basis for a romantic idea of Florida.”

In his first solo exhibit, Armetta presents that idea through twelve medium-scale oil landscapes that reveal the darkness lurking behind Florida landscapes that locals come across every day, like a sunrise, and those, such as the patch of woods in “Apoxee Fog”, that are hidden away. Music -- specifically Boards of Canada’s “Music Has the Right to Children” and composer William Basinski’s “The Disintegration Loops” -- fueled his contemplation of the Sunshine State’s dark side.

See the Dark Florida exhibit at the Armory Art Center at 1700 Parker Ave., West Palm Beach, 561-832-1776. The opening reception will be held on October 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit runs through December 8, 2012.

BOBBY LOAD 1970-2012 THAT GODDAMN SCREAMYears ago I met, booked and played a few shows with young Bobby. LOAD at one time even played live with no delay for an hour on my radio program, Resident Noize! He was, for my money, the best frontman South Florida ever produced. I recall driving Bobby and some of the Blanket (pre-Baby Robot/Game 4/Death on a Stick/Ant Lunch Musick) peeps to a show one night and he firmly insisted we play his cassette with all the new tracks they had just finished recording. Before every song he gave us a good 5

minute monologue about how and why that particular song came to be. It was freaking hilarious... and brilliant! I’ve always wished I had a recording of those stories... his exuberance was thru the roof. He couldn’t wait to share the music and it was a moment I’ll never forget. I reached out to a couple friends that knew him best and asked them to comment on his recent passing. ~Steev Rullman

Fausto Figueredo | LOAD In 1991, I was fortunate enough to meet Bobby Johnston. He wanted me to join his band. There was no “band” yet, but he knew he was singing. He had a guitar player (Jeff Tucci) and the band was called LOAD. I just needed to join and help him find a bass player so we could get to practicing. Luckily my bass player (Tony Qualls) from an old band-Genetic Mistake- was back from Knoxville and wanted to play. LOAD was the beginning of a Brotherhood that would never be broken.

Bobby had to deal with a lot of Fucked Up Shit growing up. So to escape some of

the worlds negative shit Bob went to a place where that stuff could not hurt him. A place where the Crap that he had to eat didn’t affect him. On stage Bobby was the man! He could hold an audience of any size in the palm of his hand. Strong, Powerful, Angry, Smart, Witty were all descriptive of Bobby on stage. Off stage it was different. Soft, Caring, Sensitive, Vulnerable all come to mind.

Bobby had God given talent. He had plenty to sing about and sang about everything. He had perfect timing. Then there was that God Damn SCREAM! We all adopted the same attitude; On Stage we were to ATTACK! and that’s what we did for over a decade. We kicked the side of the South Florida Music Scene and in my opinion Stained it Permanently!

Bobby lived his life on his own terms. No One could tell him any different. He was a kind person. I never saw him wrong anyone. The Girls loved him. Shit everybody Loved him. I Loved him and I will miss him dearly!

I’m not sad anymore. I’m Glad. I’m glad that I have Bobby on wax and can slap it on my turntable at any time. I’m Glad that I knew Bob,and for the times we shared together (even when it was in the van for weeks on end).

He was My Friend, My Brother, My Partner in Crime, and Most Important to Me... My Singer. I Love Ya Bob, REST. ~ Fausto

Gregory Johnson | POSTFACE When contacted about doing this piece in memory of our erstwhile friend, Bobby Johnston, I was sitting on a remote stretch of Deerfield Beach on a gorgeous day. I had packed a small cooler with beer and a salami sandwich, had a good book, my headphones, and I was prepared for relaxation. PureHoney’s intent was for us to string together some fond stories and amusing anecdotes about our fallen comrade and I was eager to share my insight and provide some positive prose. PureHoney had other ideas: a midnight deadline. Bobby’s booming voice suddenly swelled in my head as I imagined him yelling “A midnight deadline? This is like a goddamn shotgun wedding!”

Bobby’s ability to transform himself from a stammering, beer swilling, almost reserved persona offstage into a maniacal, humorous and ferocious beast onstage was my introduction to the mighty onslaught of LOAD. This occurred at Deerfield’s Ambassador Club, home to many fine punk shows in the early 90’s. My band Postface and LOAD would go on to share stages and parties and mayhem for years to come. Playing with Load was a symbiotic relationship, as it made Postface get heavier and Load get weirder. So many shows, in fact, that Bobby began spending more time with us than with his own band! After-show parties stretched into weeklong engagements for Johnston, as he literally couch surfed his way around Boca and Deerfield with his newly found accomplices. In my recent mourningful musings on the untimely demise of Dan Hosker, I recalled referring to him as ubiquitous, as his omnipresence on anything and everything in our music scene was duly noted. Bobby achieved this same notoriety with people’s couches. Regaling audiences with episodes of debauchery experienced with my pal Bobby could fill volumes, or at least chapters. Whether it was going to the weekly punk rock softball game in Dogpatch with a head full of acid (and Bobby with green hair) or the time he showed up out of nowhere on my doorstep with an invite to go to some swank party where we could eat and drink for free (before getting the boot)... Bobby always made life more interesting. Over the years we had lost touch, as we began to travel in different circles. We still occasionally enjoyed each other’s company and I am eternally grateful for the laughs we have shared. His passing reinforces in me the valuable lesson that life is short and we can never take anything for granted. Thank you, Bobby Johnston, for being you!

LEA VENDETTA South Florida tattoo artist Lea Vendetta has enjoyed her newfound celebrity status in the months since Spike TV reality show Ink Master aired last January. The reality show contestant didn’t take the grand prize, but she has received national attention that’s filled her calendar with appearances at conventions in the likes of Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

“It’s awesome,” the Parisian-born artist says of her celebrity. “When I go somewhere, people recognize me. People are like, ‘I want to buy you a drink.’ I love it.” This fall, she’s offering Lea Vendetta 2013 Calendar to help others keep their busy lives organized. It doesn’t hurt that each month features a pin-up pose of Vendetta shot by California-based photographer Robert Alvarado. Vendetta, who has been working in the field since she arrived in South Florida in 1996, says that one of the reasons that she was selected to compete on Ink Master is because of her versatility with ink. She can execute the full range of tattoo images, from portraits to old-fashioned designs and Japanese art. Now, she says, her work is getting international attention as the reality show is starting to air in South America and Europe. Still, Vendetta has found the time to promote her 2013 calendar locally. She will appear at Dada (52 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach) on Friday, November 23. The event will feature local bands The State Of and Ferocious Stones as well as a tattooed pin-up beauty contest, judged by Vendetta’s Ink Master co-star Bili Vegas. The grand prize winner will win $500, a pin-up calendar photo shoot with photographer

Kris Starry and an advertisement opportunity with Tattoo Afterlife. Vendetta will also appear at Blue Martini

Lea Vendetta 2013 Calendar will be for sale on-site at both events for $20.Locals interested in getting tattooed by Lea should visit Ink and Pistons (2715 S. Dixie Hwy., West Palm Beach). The tattoo shop, which is owned by Stitch Rock founder Amanda Linton and husband JR Linton, opened in September. “The shop is amazing,” Vendetta says. “In the back, they have Slush Box Gallery, which has all the cool merchandise that local indie craftmakers make.”
