● The climate is Tropical Marine with average temperatures year round, near 80 °F (26.7 °C) in lower elevations and 70 °F

● Location: Caribbean, island between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, east of the Dominican Republic.

● Puerto Rico, officially known as the

Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Estado Libre

Asociado de Puerto Rico), is an unincorporated

territory of the United States, located in the

northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican

Republic and west of both the U.S. Virgin Islands

and the British Virgin Islands.

● Puerto Rico is only 100 miles long by 35 miles

wide, making it the smallest island of the Greater

Antilles. Puerto Rico (Spanish for "rich port")

consists of an archipelago that includes the main

island of Puerto Rico and several islands:

Vieques, Culebra, Mona and numerous islets.

Puerto Rico is also home to a few quirky and unusual facts. Here are some fun

facts about the country that are a little goofy.

● Women from Puerto Rico have won the Miss Universe pageant five

times. Even though the country is a territory of the United States, it

competes as an individual.

● Puerto Rico also competes individually in the Olympics each year, and

they have won six medals total.

● The country isn’t home to any indigenous large wildlife. Most of their

animals are exotic birds and fish.

● The largest telescope in the world is located in Puerto Rico. It is used to

look at asteroids in space, and determine if any ever get too close to the

Earth’s surface.

● The widest part of the island is 65 kilometers.

● Rum has contributed greatly to the widely to the country’s economy and

history. It has been apart of the island’s history for over 400 years

● The tasty and spicy food of Puerto Rico

comes from a mixture of Spanish,

America, British and African inspirations.

● In Puerto Rico, it is very well-mannered

to kiss someone on the cheek when

greeting them. During your conversation,

it is also appropriate to stand very close

to the person who you are talking to.

● Many of the words that Puerto Ricans

use for building names, household items

and food products originated from the

Taino Indians, who lived in Puerto Rico

before Christopher Columbus founded

the island.

● Spanglish can be heard in parts of the

country, due to the influence of the

English language.

● Bomba, plena and trova music can be

heard throughout the streets of Puerto

Rico during parties and celebrations.

Merengue music and dancing is also

popular.

More than half - 51.6 percent - of Puerto Ricans have private insurance

coverage (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010).

• More than 20 percent of Puerto Ricans have a bachelor's degree,

whereas only 16 percent of Puerto Ricans residing in the mainland have

a bachelor's degree (Pew Hispanic Center, 2010).

• Florida is gaining a net 7,300 Puerto Ricans a year, far more than any

other U.S. state (U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey,

2011).

1958, Laurance Rockefeller threw an inaugural party for Dorado Beach, his luxury resort on the northern coast of Puerto Rico. The guests included millionaires, politicians, and movie stars. In the years that followed, Dorado became the most glamorous resort in the Caribbean, attracting everyone from Ava Gardner to John F. Kennedy. But, as time passed, resorts on other islands lured high-end travellers away, and Dorado eventually became a charming relic. In 2006, it closed. History had passed it by.

that the signs are in Spanish, the

distance markers in kilometers and the

gas sold in liters.

● Health and Medical Facilities: Health standards

in Puerto Rico are generally comparable with

those of the United States, its medical facilities are

among the finest in the Caribbean. There are

physicians and hospitals in all cities.

110 volts/60 cycles, exactly the same as in the

continental U.S. and Canada.

the Island. Proper dressing should be observed by

men and women. People under 18 are not

allowed.
