EDITOR'S PREFACEBUDDHIST AND HINDU MONUMENTS OF EASTERN INDIA AND BANGLADESH
The American Committee for South Asian Art is pleased to publish this section of its
photographic archive. This project was made possible by funding from the National Endowment for the
Humanities; The Inter Documentation Company, Leiden; The Ohio State University, College of the Arts;
and The Ohio State University Office of Research. Deepest gratitude is expressed to each of these
sources of support.
My deepest thanks go to Janice Leoshko, who first served as Archivist for this project, and to
Janice Glowski, who completed the work. Without the hard work and care shown by these individuals,
this project would not have reached fruition. Thanks are also due to John C. Huntington, who compiled
and drew the map that accompanies this Archive.
Deep appreciation is also due to the major contributors of photographs in the archive, who are, in
alphabetical order: Frederick M. Asher (A), John C. Huntington and Susan L. Huntington (H), and Janice
Leoshko (L). Initials in parentheses indicate the designation for these individuals used in the
identification of the photo source in the captions. Other individuals who contributed photographs include
Pattaratorn Chirapravati, Parween Hasan, and Claudine Picron. Photographs contributed by these
individuals were taken with the kind permission of the Archaeological Survey of India, the
Archaeological Department of Bangladesh, Department of Ancient History of Patna University.
Thanks are also due to the many institutions and collectors around the world who contributed
photographs to the project and to the institutions who allowed photography at them. Institutional sources
of photographs include the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the American Institute of Indian

Editor's Preface
Captions are printed in boldface type, although lines that contain italicized words are not in bold
due to the limitations of the computer program.. Diacritics were not used in order to facilitate computer
searches,. For the most part, information about the subjects of the photographs follows museum labels.
Information about provenance has not been independently verified except in a few cases.. Incorrect
iconographic identifications have been changed only in obvious cases. When objects could not be
measured, estimates of sizes were sometimes provided by individual photographers.. Conversions for
estimates given in inches suggest greater precision than intended by the original estimators.
Photographs are organized in the following sequences: For India: By state, alphabetically; within
states by districts alphabetically; within districts, by sites alphabetically,. For Bangladesh: By districts
alphabetically; within districts by sites alphabetically.. In some cases, alphabetical order was abandoned
to accommodate a more sensible arrangement of a particular group of materials.. For, architectural
materials, site views occur first, followed by individual monuments. Photographs of buildings and
multisided works are arranged in a clockwise pattern. The order for sculptures is as follows: stone, then
metal, then other material.. Within each medium, Buddhist materials occur first, then Hindu, and then
other materials,. Buddhist objects are arranged as follows: Buddha figures (standing, then seated, each by
mudra); Buddhas, crowned (standing, then seated, each by mudra); Bodhisattvas (standing, followed by
seated); Female figures (standing, followed by seated); miscellaneous materials. Hindu materials are
arranged in the following order: Siva and Saivite, Visnu and Vaisnavite, Surya, other male deities, and
female deities.. Jain works of art occur after Hindu objects, followed by miscellaneous materials.

NOTE ON FORMAT OF SUBJECT INDEX
This subject index was created from a computer database made by Susan L. Huntington
to accompany the microfiche photos. The following subject index is meant for those individuals
unable to access the database, and thus, it in no way contains all the information found in the
actual database. Search results contain only those words found in the photo captions. In cases
where large amounts of data were found, subjects were broken down into secondary categories..
For example, if the subject can be referenced under a two-part adjectival name this name was
used instead of the broader category such as in the case of Ardhanarisvara for Siva and
Garudasana for Visnu In addition to these name divisions, large subjects were divided into
categories by posture, seated and standing, and fragments. For Buddha images, this large section
was further separated into categories by hand gestures, abhayamudra, bhumisparsamudra,
varadamudra, dharmacakramudra, dhyanamudra, as well as the seated posture bhadrasana,.
Buddhas with life scenes and crowned Buddhas were- also given their own listings. As a
consequence, this subject index is meant as a reference guide solely for sculptural material,
organized by their dominant visual traits, and cannot be used as a guide for temples or Buddhist
complexes. For architectural citations refer to the Guide to Sites And Monuments.

EDITOR'S PREFACE
ISLAMIC MONUMENTS OF EASTERN INDIA AND BANGLADESH
The American Committee for South Asian Art is proud to present an
archive of 4558 photographs of Islamic art and architecture of eastern India
(Bihar and West Bengal States) and the nation of Bangladesh. The archive
covers 221 separate sites organized alphabetically within districts of Bihar,
West Bengal, and Bangladesh.
Dr. Catherine B. Asher was the author of all introductory sections,
organized the photos, provided caption information for the photographs,
and all information for the computer data base. She and her husband
Frederick M. Asher were also the principal suppliers of the photographs;
without their exhaustive field work in eastern India and Bangladesh, this
archive could never have been produced. Asher photos are designated by
an "A" preceding the negative number in the photo captions. I must
express my deepest thanks to both Drs. Asher for their extensive efforts on
behalf of this project. Dr. Catherine Asher in particular must be thanked
for her excellent work and for her co-operation at every stage of the project.
Other contributors of photographs and the designations for their
photographs are: Parveen Hassan (H), Ebba Koch (EK), The Archaeological
Survey of India (ASI), and The David McCutchion Trust. The McCutchion
photos were not given an identifying letter designation to avoid confusion
with the letters used by the late David McCutchion to identify his own
Editor's Prefacepage 2
materials and are instead credited here: photos 1-6, 185-188, 203-307, 457-
487,542-565,942,1107-1108,1777-1810,2166-2169,2223-2225.1 All
photographs were taken with the kind permission of the Archaeological
Survey of India and the Archaeological Department of Bangladesh. Dr.
John C. Huntington must be thanked for the many hours he spent on
technical matters relating to the database and for drawing the map. Dr.
William Jeffrey McKibben, who joined the project in its late stages as
Archivist, must be thanked for his careful attention to details in the
finalization of the materials. Ms. Susan Moseley was a great help in final
preparation of the index of the materials.
This project was made possible by funding from the National
Endowment for the Humanities, The Aga Khan Program for Islamic
Architecture at M.I.T. and Harvard University, Inter Documentation
Company, The Ohio State University College of the Arts, and The Ohio State
University Office of Research and Graduate Studies. To each of these
sources, I would like to express my deepest thanks. Ground plans and Dr.
Asher's textual materials for Bengal were reproduced with the kind
permission of Dr. George Michell, from The Islamic Heritage of Bengal
(Art and Archaeology Research Papers 1, Paris: UNESCO, 1984), which he
edited. The ground plan for the palace at Rohtasgarh (Rohtas 6:38) was
reproduced from Kuraishi, 1931, List (see Bibliography for full citation).
1. In the database available to accompany this archive, a blanket date of
1966 has been used for all McCutchion photographs, since the actual date of
any given photograph or series of photographs was unknown.
Editor's Prefacepage 3
Captions include the following information (if relevant for each case)
and appear in this format:
Country. State (India only). District. Town.
Inscribed name of monument/complex (if there is one).
Popular name of the monument/complex. Building name.
Subject of the photograph.
Context of the photo. Location, if detail.
Orientation ofphoto. Vantage of photo. Location.
Fiche name and number. Photo number. Negative number.
Because information pertaining to the sites, monuments, and
photographs were entered into a database to provide both captions and the
index, certain peculiarities must be explained. First, unavoidable
repetition occurs in the captions in cases where the inscribed name of the
monument, the popular name of the monument, and the building name
are the same. Since in indexing one might wish to call up information in
any of the three individual fields, it was necessary to repeat the information
each time. A second peculiarity occurs because each structure had to be
given a unique name in order to allow meaningful computer searches. For
example, a building called "East gate" would not be unique, and therefore
was coded with a place name or monument name to make it so. For

information on purchasing a copy of the data base, please contact Inter
Documentation Company.

Author's Introductionpage 5
INTRODUCTION
Although not as well known as the Islamic architecture of Delhi or the
Deccan, the eastern Indian monuments form a corpus just as rich and
important. This archive represents an introduction to the monuments, a
preliminary step to facilitate closer, more scholarly studies of them.
From the pre-Mughal period, little architecture datable to the pre-
Mughal period remains in Bihar, even though more than 50 Islamic
inscriptions of this phase have been found there. Early Islamic buildings
located in western Bihar, such as the Telhara Sangi Mosque or the Tomb of
Malik Ibrahun Bayyu in Bihar Sharif, appear to be influenced by other north
Indian architectural tradition, while those situated in eastern Bihar, such as
the ruined brick structure in Colgong (Bhagalpur District) are closely related
to the architecture of nearby Bengal. This is hardly surprising both due to the
geographic proximity of modern Bengal and because Bengal Sultans, during
various periods, controlled parts of the Gangetic valley in Bihar. In contrast
to the paucity of extant pre-Mughal structures in Bihar, a great many still
stand in West Bengal and Bangladesh, here grouped together as Bengal,
reflecting their common cultural heritage. The pre-Mughal buildings of
Bengal are richly embellished by contrast to Sultanate architecture elsewhere
in the subcontinent. They are, for the most part, brick structures ornamented
with designs in brick relief and often glazed tiles. The abundance of plan
types, like the treatment of the facade, shows considerable variety. Whereas
the buildings of most regions may be grouped by dynastic affiliation-for
example, the Tughluq or Lodi style-the pre-Mughal architecture of Bengal
best can be seen as a continuous development, occasionally enriched by the
impact of new ideas, but ultimately distinctively Bengali.
Author's Introductionpage 6
It is under the patronage of Sher Shah Sur (1538-45) that the
architectural output in Bihar becomes significant. This remarkable ruler not
only constructed monumental multi-storied tombs for his father and himself
but also encouraged an important noble, Haibat Khan, to build a Jami'
Mosque in the hill fort of Rohtasgarh. This mosque introduces the single-
aisled multi-bayed mosque type to eastern Indian Mughal architecture.
While a few mosques dating to the late 16th or early 17th century are found,
for example the Jami' Mosque in the capital of Rajmahal (now in Santal
Parganas District, modern Bihar) and the Jami' Mosque in Old Malda, most
Mughal architecture in eastern India datable before the time of Shah Jahan
is found in Bihar. The reason for this probably can be attributed to the fact
that Bihar acquiesced to Mughal rule sooner than did more rebellious Bengal.
This early Mughal architecture in Bihar relied heavily on contemporary north
Indian prototypes as evidenced by the Mosque at Khurramabad, the Qal'a at
Sasaram and the Choti Dargah at Maner. The reason for this dependence is
two-fold: one, the patrons were Mughals and thus would build in the tradition
known to them, and two, Bihar had little or no indigenous architectural
tradition from which inspiration could be drawn.
In both Bihar and Bengal, the architecture from the mid-17th century
on is constructed in the imperial Mughal tradition, but all these buildings
maintain a regional identity. The eastern Indian capitals and headquarters
of this timee-Dhaka, Patna, Bihar Sharif, Bhagalpur, Rajmahal, Kharagpur,
Murshidabad, and Calcutta-are replete with monuments, many of them
presented here for the first time. Unlike the earlier architecture of Bengal,
Islamic buildings there of the Mughal period are restrained and tend to be
more subdued than contemporary architecture elsewhere in north India or the
Deccan. While the reasons for this are not altogether clear, one explanation
Author's Introductionpage 7
may be that the builders did not want to construct monuments that might
appear to resemble Hindu temples, which by this time commonly used ornate
brickwork like that of pre-Mughal Islamic structures in Bengal. In Bihar,
where architecture even before the Islamic period has tended to be severe,
monuments remain austere. By the 19th century, British architecture
influenced the appearance of Islamic structures in all eastern India.
The Islamic architecture of Bihar, West Bengal and Bangladesh forms
the corpus of this archive. Based largely on field work done by this author, it
does not profess to be comprehensive. Some entire districts such as
Chittagong, Sylhet, and Palamau are omitted, for the author did not study
sites there in situ, and no recent scholarly investigations of these areas have
been undertaken. Within any site, only those monuments which have not
been drastically reconstructed are included. While I attempted to document
the exterior and interior of each monument fully, this was not always
possible. However, the main purpose of this archive, that is to give an idea of
the extant Islamic remains in eastern India, I believe, has been achieved.
This survey, then, can serve as the basis for more thorough and meticulous
field work and analysis by other scholars. Monuments have been arranged
according to country, district, town or site, and then alphabetically by title.
There is no standard method of spelling Persian, Urdu, or Bengali names, but
I have tried to remain consistent, adopting commonly used spellings where
known. Due to the difficulties in reading and entering diacriticals, only long
vowels have been marked, and these appear only in the introductory sections.
No diacriticals at all have been used on place names, and none appear in the
captions for the photographs due to the limitations of the computer program
originally used for the materials.
Author's Introductionpage 8
The archive results largely from field work done by the author with
support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Aga Khan
Foundation for Islamic Architecture and the American Institute of Indian
Studies. Some sites in Bengal, however, were covered by the late David
McCutchion, whose devotion to the art of Bengal often took him to monuments
often not seen by other scholars. His photographs, today maintained by the
Victoria and Albert Museum, London, are used with the permission of the
Trustees of the David McCutchion Estate. Unless indicated, all other
photographs were taken by Catherine and Frederick Asher and published
with permission of the Aga Khan Foundation for Islamic Architecture.
A separate entry and bibliography are provided for monuments in
Bengal. For monuments in Bihar this is not done. There a general
bibliography is included for the entire area, and each entry covers an entire
site, not a single monument. The inconsistency was not introduced by the
author. The author completed the Islamic section of this archive in June,
1983. Because of editorial concerns with the Hindu and Buddhist sections of
the archive, this section was not given to IDC until 1989. Only a few, not
comprehensive, post-1913 publications have been added to the bibliography.
