1THE FUTURE OF CONNECTED LIFE |

In the latest thought leadership report from PSFK Labs, our team presents a plan to lead everyone a brighter future. We're responding to the premise (that I’m sure that many of you acknowledge) that our connected world seems to bring as many challenges as it does opportunities.

In addition, the concept of work-life balance is gone and everything has become blurred. Our days have changed radically in just a few years. We dynamically shift from states of live, work, and play hour-by-hour, often minute-by-minute.

By studying the emerging ideas from around the world that help us lead more progressive lives, we have identified key trends driving our modern perception of well-being. To live, work, and play better today we seek three things: effectiveness and productivity, balance and awareness and personal growth and fulfillment.

PSFK Labs’ Future of Connected Life report explores an emerging mix of tech and analog products and services that are baking efficiency, balance, and growth into people’s lifestyles as they transition between different their various phases throughout their days.

In our Effectiveness & Productivity theme we explore how on-demand services and creative life hacks are helping people offload key responsibilities and make better use of their time.

In our Balance & Awareness theme, we look at how people are achieving better peace of mind by living synchronously in the cloud, while finding time to unplug from their devices at key moments.

Finally in our Personal Growth & Fulfillment theme, we examine an ever-expanding range of platforms and services that are changing how people achieve their goals.

We see this report serving as a guide for companies to respond to the changing needs of their customers so that we can all live more happy, healthy, and productive lives.

2THE FUTURE OF CONNECTED LIFE |

Modern life is a study in extremes. The rapid rise of technology and its successive integration into nearly every facet of our lives has left many of us figuring out how to adapt to its omnipresence rather than the other way around. At the same time, these very same devices offer the promise of making us more productive, expanding our social circles, and achieving our personal goals.

This coevolution has quickened the pace of daily existence, while shrinking our world, and connecting us with anyone or anything from anywhere at anytime. And while reading that sentence may itself feel exhausting, it fits well with our current experience and hints at a shift in our collective expectations - always on, forever accessible, and on-demand. This means that the same requirements we place on everyone and everything else are now reflected back on us.

The result is that the boundaries that used to exist between live, work and play have for all intents and purposes disappeared as consumers have slipped into a constantly connected world. And the impacts of this are very real. People are faced with a barrage of notifications coming during client meetings or family dinners. There are corresponding notifications that reminds us of an import detail we would have otherwise forgotten or allows to discover a new favorite spot in our city. With all these devices pinging us and vying for our attention, how do we know what is important?

The desire to slow down, unplug and refocus has caused many of us to rethink our relationship with the devices that populate our lives. While a healthy skepticism of their short and long term effects is certainly a good thing, we appear to have reached a point where there's no turning back. At the same time, it's becoming clear that not every technological innovation is useful or even necessary, driving home the fact that we as consumers, creators and people need to find the proper balance to lead happy, successful, and fulfilling lives.

With this report, the team at PSFK have gathered the newest products, services and technologies from the marketplace that are people become their best selves while immersed in a tech-driven world. The resulting 12 trends tell the story of how we can navigate our increasingly complex relationships with our devices and ultimately benefit from them. The aim of this report is to provide brands, organizations and culturemakers with inspiration to cater to the competing desires and changing needs of the connected consumer of tomorrow.
