Turner leads a quartet of kindred spirits here, often entwining in serpentine fashion with rising-star trumpeter Avishai Cohen. They play long, introspective lines of hypnotic grace; and with the lithe rhythm section of bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore, there is subtle volatility in the air. Lathe of Heaven, produced by Manfred Eicher at New York's Avatar Studio in June 2013, has a long-breathed essence characteristic of Turner's work, with melody taking primacy. There is mystery to the album, a quality of patient storytelling to the compositions. The music also echoes with allusions to literature and relationships key to Turner's personality as a musician. The album's title references Ursula K. Le Guin's 1971 science fiction novel of the same name. There are also gestural allusions to Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter, as well as Stevie Wonder. One of the highlights is "Year of the Rabbit," a rangy counterpart to the title track of Fly's 2012 ECM release, Year of the Snake. And the closer on Lathe of Heaven, the melodically haunting "Brother Sister," is a new, more expansive version of a piece first heard on that Fly album. This is Mark Turner's ECM leader debut, following albums for the label in the cooperative trio Fly with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard (beginning with Sky & Country), and appearances on key recordings by Billy Hart (All Our Reasons& One Is The Other), Enrico Rava (New York Days) and Stefano Bollani's simultaneously-released Joy In Spite Of Everything(3784459). CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 8/9/2014

Anja Lechner & François Couturier

Moderato Cantabile - Komitas, Gurdjieff &

Mompou

4810992 028948109920 CD ECM NEW SERIES £9.49 CLASSICAL

After a decade of shared work in the Tarkovsky Quartet and an ongoing alliance in the Pergolesi Project, German cellist Anja Lechner and French pianist Francois Couturier unveil their new duo. The players approach the music from different vantage points: Lechner is a classical soloist with an uncommon interest in improvisation, Couturier a jazz musician travelling ever further from jazz. On ‘Moderato cantabile’ they present their own arrangements of works by three fascinating outsiders from the margins of music history - G.I. Gurdjieff, Komitas and Federico Mompou. To differing degrees their music reveals influences from the east, both in terms of relationship to folk traditions and religious music, and philosophically. A contemplative air pervades the session. The programme has connections to Anja Lechner's acclaimed account of Gurdjieff's music on the earlier Chants, Hymns and Dances (9819613, with Vassilis Tsabropoulos), but the new duo has its own identity, and time spent in Armenia has deepened Lechner's understanding of the contexts from which the music emerged: her cello assumes almost a singer's role in these pieces, exploring the strong melodies. François Couturier's compositions function as both contrasting and complementary elements. As a player, François has a long history of working with Mompou's music. He has been influenced, furthermore, by his association with Anouar Brahem, and the sonorities of the Middle East are part of his palette. ‘Moderato cantabile’, a striking and unusual album, was recorded in the rich acoustics of the Lugano studio in November 2013 and produced by Manfred Eicher. Personnel: Anja Lechner (cello), François Couturier (piano)

CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 8/9/2014

Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra & Edo de Waart

Wagner: Symphony in C, Tristan und Isolde,

Siegfried Idyll

CC72649 608917264920 CD CHALLENGE CLASSICS £8.49 CLASSICAL

Conductor Edo de Waart is renowned for his interpretation of the works of Richard Wagner and this is the latest release from Challenge Classics to present him conducting Wagner’s music. On this disc he is heard directing the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in three pieces, the early Symphony in C, the Nachtgesang and the Liebestod from his opera Tristan und Isolde in an orchestral arrangement by the composer Henk de Vlieger and the Siegfried Idyll. Richard Wagner was just 19 when in the summer of 1832 he wrote his Symphony in C. The work itself clearly shows the influence of his compatriot and predecessor Ludwig van Beethoven. Nowhere in Wagner's compositions are dramatic elements so integrated into the music as in Tristan und Isolde, a work that is at the same time the most symphonic of his operas. It was written between 1857 and 1859, and is notable for Wagner's unprecedented use of chromaticism, tonality, and orchestral colour. The Siegfried Idyll was composed in 1870 and performed as a surprise birthday present for Wagner’s wife Cosima on Christmas day that year. Although the musical themes of the piece are largely borrowed from Wagner’s dramatic opera Siegfried, the third part of “The Ring”, the Siegfried Idyll is one of his most elegiac works, written as a public declaration of his love for the woman who a year and a half before had given birth to their son, also called Siegfried. Edo de Waart is Chief Conductor of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Music Director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. As an opera conductor, de Waart has enjoyed major success in a large and varied repertoire in many of the world's greatest opera houses. The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1945 and since then has been led by many of the world’s most renowned conductors including Bernard Haitink, Jean Fournet, Willem van Otterloo, Hans Vonk, Sergiu Comissiona, Jaap van Zweden, and Edo de Waart. The current incumbent Markus Stenz was appointed chief conductor in 2012. Personnel: Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Edo de Waart (conductor) Tracks: Symphony in C 1. I. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 8/9/2014

1B1, Jan Bjøranger, Christian Ihle Hadland & Erlend Skomsvoll

Grieg: Holberg Variations

PSC1332 7033662013326 CD SIMAX £8.49 CLASSICAL

The highly-regarded Ensemble 1B1 have teamed up with jazz musician and composer Erlend Skomsvoll and Norway's exciting young pianist Christian Ihle Hadland to pay tribute to Edvard Grieg. The disc features three different arrangements of the composer's much-loved Holberg Suite, the original version for solo piano, Grieg's own adaptation for strings, and a performance of an improvisatory work by Skomsvoll based around the piece. Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite subtitled "Suite in olden style" consists of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms. It was written in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Danish-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg. The suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later arranged by the composer for string orchestra. The disc opens with the well-known string version and continues with a performance of the original piano piece by Christian Ihle Hadland. Hadland's interpretation conjures up a multitude of rhythmic and timbral nuances, lifting the original Holberg Suite into the great European piano tradition. The album concludes with jazz musician and composer Erlend Skomsvoll's Holberg Variations. Skomsoll takes the iconic themes and musical phrases of the suite and leads the string orchestra in an improvisational game, where the motifs get transformed into pulsating passages with lingering textures. Personnel: 1B1, Jan Bjøranger (conductor), Christian Ihle Hadland (piano), Erlend Skomsvoll (piano)

Ketil Haugsand

Rameau: The Complete Works for Harpsichord

PSC1345 7033662013456 CD2 SIMAX £12.89 CLASSICAL

This 2CD set features recordings of the complete works for harpsichord by the major 18th century French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau's performed by the renowned early keyboard specialist Ketil Haugsand. It is being released to mark the 250th anniversary of Rameau's death. Rameau published his Premier Livre de Pièces de clavecin in 1706. It is remarkable for its unerring sense of harmonic direction, and sophisticated rhythmic and textural designs. The Premier Livre consists essentially of a traditional suite of dance movements prefaced by an introductory prelude. Nearly twenty years elapsed before Rameau published his second book of harpsichord pieces. The Pièces de Clavecin of 1724 reflects a huge stylistic advance over the earlier collection as, since writing the first book, Rameau had composed several cantatas and had become increasingly interested in the theatre. His third book of harpsichord pieces, the Nouvelles suites de Pièces de clavecin, first appeared in 1729 or 1730, and he published his Pièces de Clavecin en concerts in 1741. The last of these was originally intended as a chamber work for harpsichord and two other instruments. Ketil Haugsand studied with Gustav Leonhardt at the Amsterdam Conservatory where he was awarded the coveted "Prix d"Excellence" in 1975. Later he was laureate at international harpsichord competitions in Paris and Bruges. Alongside his solo work, Ketil Haugsand is also conductor of the Norwegian Baroque Orchestra and the Arte Real Ensemble. His recordings of works by, amongst others, Bach, Rameau, Marchand, and Forqueray, for Simax Classics, Virgin and Linn have won significant international acclaim. CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 8/9/2014

Trondheim Barokk, Ingeborg Dalheim, Marianne Beate Kielland & Njal Sparbo

Ostsee - Church Music by Bertouch, Theile & Vierdanck

PSC1330 7033662013302 CD SIMAX £8.49 CLASSICAL

The 17th and 18th century composers Johann Vierdanck, Johann Theile and Georg von Bertouch all received their musical training in Saxony, spending large parts of their professional lives based around the Baltic Sea. The music of these significant but rarely heard composers is performed on this CD by the specialist period instrument ensemble Trondheim Barokk.

Georg von Bertouch (1668-1743) was a contemporary of J.S. Bach and was well-established as a composer around that time. Bertouch's cantatas are the works of a young man and based on traditional form, whilst his sonatas on the other hand were composed towards the end of his life when new trends and developments had crystallised into what is usually called the late Baroque style. Johann Vierdanck (1605-46), began his career as a singer in the Hofkapelle of the Elector of Saxony in Dresden where the great German composer Heinrich Schütz encouraged his early attempts at writing music. Later he moved to Stralsund, spending the final ten years of his life as organist of the Marienkirche. Johann Theile (1646-1724) lived in Lübeck for much of his working life, counting among his friends the composers Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Adam Reincken. He became Kapellmeister to the court of Duke Christian Albrecht at Gottorf.

Under the guidance of major musical figures like Andrew Parrott and Sigiswald Kuijken Trondheim Barokk have developed into one of the most accomplished early music groups on the current international music scene. Soprano Ingeborg Dalheim is a member of Les Arts Florissans, whilst Marianne Beate Kielland performs regularly with conductors like Jordi Savall and Fabio Biondi. Bass Njål Sparbo has won several major awards including the Kirsten Flagstad Prize.

Houston Symphony Chamber Players & Christoph Eschenbach

Schoenberg, Berg, Webern

233863 885150338636 CD3 MEMBRAN £10.23 CLASSICAL

This 3CD set presents a reissue of critically-acclaimed recordings of chamber works by four major 20th century composers, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, and

Messiaen. The music is performed by the renowned conductor and pianist Christoph Eschenbach alongside members of the Houston Symphony Chamber Players, the group he founded when he was director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra between 1988 and 1999.

Highly-regarded German conductor and pianist Christoph Eschenbach won the Steinway Youth Piano Competition when he was only eleven years old and, at the age of 22, the International Music Competition of the ARD. Simultaneously he studied conducting and today he regularly conducts the major orchestras of Europe and North America. In 1993 Eschenbach was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit for his outstanding achievements as a pianist and conductor and since then he has gathered many more awards and prizes.

One of the highlights of Eschenbachs career was his time as music director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra from 1988 until 1999. Within this period of time he founded the

Houston Symphony Chamber Players. This acclaimed ensemble initially comprised of Christoph Eschenbach himself as conductor and pianist and key members of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. Three albums with recordings from the group, none of which have been available for a long time, are here being re-released on the Membran label. The featured works, by Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and Olivier Messiaen, are universally considered to be 20th century classics.

CLASSICAL NEW RELEASE - 8/9/2014

Wilhelm Furtwängler Opera Live

600168 4053796001689 CD41 DOCUMENTS £34.99 CLASSICAL

This extensive 41CD set is devoted to live opera recordings by the legendary conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler and includes several famous versions of some of Wagner's greatest works including the "Ring" from La Scala Milan, the first post-war Tristan and Isolde, made in Berlin in 1947, Tannhäuser from Vienna, and a performance of Die Meistersinger in Nuremberg, as well as complete full-length opera recordings from Salzburg.Salzburg. Wilhelm Furtwängler is regarded as the 20th century's foremost German conductor. The collection presented here attempts to document all the existing recordings of opera performances directed by Furtwängler either in complete editions or excerpts. At its centre are four evenings in March/April 1950 when La Scala Milan became the first opera house in

the world to stage Wagner's "Ring" after World War 2. These legendary performances are supplemented by his Wagner interpretations in London, Vienna, Nuremberg and Bayreuth, and especially by his October 1947 Tristan und Isolde recorded at the Admiralspalast in Berlin and directed by Frida Leider. Furtwangler's true home after 1948 became Salzburg. Sadly only fragments of a performance of Beethoven's Fidelio from that year have survived, but a painstaking restoration of this towering performance given in 1950 with Flagstad and Patzak has been possible. Also in 1950 his first recording of Mozart's Don Giovanni with Tito Gobbi was made, and then in the following year the same composer's Die Zauberflöte. Both are included here.
