NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 9, 2014

Anyone familiar with the immortal 1967 EMI recording of Fauré’s Requiem by The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge knows the group has a longstanding affinity with this glorious work. The choir’s latest account of the Requiem features a reconstruction of the original performance (p.19). From The Imperial Court, a fascinating new release from the superb chamber choir Stile Antico, focuses on music written for the house of Hapsburg (p.9). Violinist James Ehnes is joined by members of the Seattle Chamber Music Society for an album of music by 20th century American composers (p.23). Two chamber groups make their harmonia mundi débuts this month. Camerata Pacifica performs music by American composer John Harbison (p.10) and the ensemble Gli incogniti plays French Baroque music by Couperin (p.8). Cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras returns to the spotlight with a set of the complete sonatas of Beethoven (p.7). Stephen Osborne, one of Hyperion’s unbeatable lineup of star pianists, plays sonatas by Medtner and Rachmaninov (p.15). Cello and piano are also featured in two concerto recordings, with cellist Natalie Clein playing Saint-Saëns (p.16) and pianist Simon Trpceski playing Tchaikovsky (p.22). Valery Gergiev also completes his Brahms symphony cycle for LSO Live (p.20). On his third release for Jazz Village, the great Ahmad Jamal, joined by his old friend Yusef Lateef, is featured in a live double album and DVD (p.29). Brazilian Márcio Faraco’s Cajueiro marks his first release for World Village (p.33). Just in time for the film’s fall release, Howe Records presents the soundtrack to David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, featuring a score written by composer Howard Shore (p.27).

IMPORT Given the frequency of performances and recordings of his music today, it is hard to imagine that prior to 1970, Telemann’s music was not held in high esteem. It is thanks to the pioneering work of groups like La Petite Bande that listeners today

can enjoy the rich bounty of Telemann’s music. This recording of a varied selection of his concertos and suites with recorder features soloist Bart Coen.

IMPORTThe Rose Consort of Viols took their inspiration for Serenissima from viol-maker Richard Jones’s reconstruction of a Venetian instrument by Francesco Linarol. On it they trace a path from the viol’s northern Italian origins to England, where it

found a particularly welcome home at the turn of the 1600s. During this period, a work by one composer might become the subject of ingenious contrapuntal treatments and exciting new dance genres emerged.

IMPORTThe charming music of French composer Jean- Michel Damase has been unjustly neglected. Martin Yates’s exploration of his music for Dutton is a triumph, revealing an appealing composer in the vein of Poulenc and Honegger. Ashley Wass plays

the Piano Concerto No.2 and Concertino, and Anna Noakes plays the melodic and graceful Flute Concerto. Completing the disc is the Symphonie of 1952.

IMPORTArthur Sullivan’s cantata On Shore and Sea and the earlier masque Kenilworth are two scores all lovers of Gilbert & Sullivan will revel in. Already the master of the charming aria, catchy number and delightful chorus, we can share with Sullivan’s first audiences

the rare pleasure of early works by the future superstar of Victorian music. Under the authoritative direction of Richard Bonynge, Sullivan’s music is vibrantly restored.

IMPORTThe fourth volume of Dutton’s exploration of John Foulds’s light music led by conductor Ronald Corp contains many delightful discoveries. It features the surviving two movements of his second Cello Concerto, the première recording of the Prelude from

his Wagnerian epic The Vision of Dante, the atmospheric suite from George Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan and the Prelude to Euripides’s tragedy Hippolytus.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ StereoDutton’s first recording with the Royal Northern Sinfonia features pianist Victor Sangiorgio in two Romantic concertos. However, there is a twist to both: one is Martin Yates’s realization of the

surviving fragments of Mendelssohn’s unfinished Piano Concerto in E and the other is Balakirev’s orchestration of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1. Not surprisingly, Balakirev brings a decidedly Russian flavor to Chopin’s sound-world.

IMPORT This collection of the complete works for cello and piano by Beethoven featuring cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and pianist Alexander Melnikov includes works that offer a taste of each of the composer’s three stylistic periods. The first sonata and the delightful variations on themes by Handel and Mozart represent his ‘early’ period style, whereas the Op.69 sonata typifies the ‘middle’ period. The two sublime sonatas of Op.102 herald the unprecedented stylistic freedom of the composer’s final decade.

IMPORT The ensemble Gli incogniti, led by Amandine Beyer, makes their harmonia mundi début with this album of chamber music by François Couperin. When he published his twin Apothéoses in memory of two great masters of music in 1724-25, Couperin was asserting his desire to promote a meeting of the French and Italian styles – from a very Gallic point of view, naturally. But, far from blindly imitating his idols, Couperin takes inspiration from these styles and arrives at a blend that takes the best from both.

IMPORT John Harbison is one of the most celebrated and wide-ranging American composers of our time. This collection from harmonia mundi, performed by the American chamber ensemble Camerata Pacifica, explores several facets of Harbison’s music. His abiding interest in jazz, folksong and hymns is exemplified by Songs America Loves to Sing. It is paired with the Four Songs of Solitude for solo violin and the world premiere recording of his String Trio, which was commissioned by Camerata Pacifica.

IMPORT This specially-priced boxed set from harmonia mundi celebrates the great French Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau on the 250th anniversary of his death. Rameau’s music continues to fascinate the musical scene the world over, as is witnessed by numerous recent productions of his operas. But Rameau also owes a good part of his current popularity to the passionate advocacy of William Christie. This deluxe boxed set includes all the Rameau recordings Christie made for harmonia mundi with his ensemble Les Arts Florissants in the 1980s and 1990s. Many are still benchmarks, and together they stand as a fitting monument to both composer and conductor.

IMPORT Hyperion presents a vocal tour-de-force from one of today’s finest mezzo-sopranos, Alice Coote. Accompanied by The English Concert and Harry Bicket (in their Hyperion label début), Coote performs a selection of Handel’s greatest arias. She

employs an extraordinary range of vocal and dramatic color to produce triumphant and moving interpretations of these masterpieces. Handel’s Italian operas are represented by Alcina, Ariodante, Radamisto and Giulio Cesare. Coote’s performances of selections from the English oratorio Hercules are a special highlight.

IMPORTThis new recording from Martin Baker and the Westminster Cathedral Choir features the three masses of William Byrd, paired with the Latin hymn Ave verum corpus. The album celebrates Byrd’s Catholic liturgical music in two ways. Most

obviously, it addresses great and timeless works. But at the same time it reminds us that the revival of Byrd’s music in the late nineteenth century was pioneered by Roman Catholic church choirs. The recording celebrates a revival of Catholic choral traditions no less than it celebrates the works themselves.

IMPORTSteven Osborne has become increasingly admired for his performances and recordings of Russian Romantic piano music. Here he presents an impressive selection from two masters who lived and worked contemporaneously. Medtner’s Sonata Romantica was the twelfth of his fourteen piano sonatas. It stands as a virtual manifesto for the composer’s art. The recording’s other major work, Rachmaninov’s Piano Sonata No.2, is a great Romantic showpiece. Osborne’s interpretation brings out all the work’s power and majesty.

IMPORTOn volume five of Hyperion’s impressive Romantic Cello Concerto series, Natalie Clein performs works for cello and orchestra by Camille Saint-Saëns. The first concerto has always been one of Saint-Saëns’s most popular pieces. It is a gloriously playful piece that carries the listener along on a melodic and emotional roller coaster. The second concerto is less familiar to most listeners. Extremely difficult for the soloist, Clein surmounts its challenges with the marvelous technique, musicianship and the passion for which she has become so well known.

IMPORT Previously Available as CDA 67090 (034571170909) Deleted July 2010This mid-priced Helios series reissue features pianist Marc-André Hamelin performing music by Russian composer Georgy Catoire. Catoire was one of a large number of composers who

flourished in pre-Revolutionary Russia at the turn of the twentieth century. Primarily a miniaturist, most of his pieces can be described as mood pictures, using sophisticated harmonic structures that give his style an especially cosmopolitan feel.

IMPORT Previously Available as CDA 66987 (034571169873) Deleted July 2013Prior to the making of this recording in 1997, no one had performed Wallace’s Creation Symphony for nearly a hundred years. In the history of the symphony in Britain, the work, which guides listeners through the

first few verses of the Book of Genesis, is unprecedented in its scope and daring. Wallace’s Pelléas and Mélisande Suite is a work of heart-on-sleeve passion, and yet both this suite and the equally rewarding Prelude to The Eumenides remain virtually unknown.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDWith this release, Valery Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra bring to a close their acclaimed Brahms cycle. Brahms is often associated with the idea of abstract music, free of programmatic content. However, the Symphony No.3 is in many ways his most personal symphony. Brahms was a fifty-year-old bachelor who declared himself to be Frei aber froh, “Free but Happy.” A motto comprising the notes F–A–F can be heard throughout the work. His Symphony No.4, composed at a mountain retreat in 1884, employs sophisticated Baroque contrapuntal and harmonic techniques and modal harmonies.

atonalism. The seventh of his ten sonatas, entitled Messe blanche, is a high point of his entire output, looking far ahead into the sound world of the 20th century. On this recording, these fascinating works are offered in probing and virtuosic performances by Andrei Korobeinikov.

IMPORT After two recordings with Ambronay Editions (which received numerous awards), the baroque ensemble Les Ombres makes their début on the Mirare label with an album dedicated to Telemann’s Paris Quartets. The unusual instrumentation of flute, violin, viola da

gamba and basso continuo gives these quartets a unique sound unlike other works of the time. They feature and inventive combination of French dance rhythms and forms, memorable themes and extensive but subtle counterpoint.

IMPORTJames Ehnes and friends from the Seattle Chamber Music Society hit the road on a fascinating journey through chamber music by some of the giants of 20th- century American classical music. Aaron Copland’s masterful Violin Sonata, Leonard Bernstein’s youthful and vibrant Piano Trio, and Samuel Barber’s B minor String Quartet with its famous Adagio slow movement (known the world over as Barber’s Adagio) are joined by Elliott Carter’s haunting Elegy from early in his long career and the otherworldly Largo by that great maverick Charles Ives.

The result is a modern Hollywood Gothic at once about the ravenous 21st Century need for fame and validation. WORLD SEPTEMBER 2014

IMPORTUnquestioned master of the cante gitano, Porrina de Badajoz (born José Salazar Molina) was a prophet only in his own country. He refused to perform anywhere other than in the land of his birth. Porrina had a particularly original approach to the cante, and his singing remains inimitable in its virtuosity, its fullness of tessitura and the range of its vocal palette.

IMPORTLa Paquera de Jerez possessed an agile, powerful voice with a special quality called laína, a falsetto style that is colorful, vibrant and typically Andalucían. As she sings her songs, she invites both new listeners and aficionados to enter an uncontrolled world, like a comet transmitting its energy. Through her songs she offers a fragment of her life story, and a whiff of Jerez, her native city.

IMPORTCanalejas de Puerto Real was a star of the Flamenco scene from his professional début in 1934 until his death in 1966. He played a considerable part in the growth and evolution of flamenco, notably in enhancing the cante por bulería. He follows in the footsteps of great cantaores such as Niño Medinas, Bernardo el de los Lobitos, Manuel Vallejo and La Niña de los Peines.

IMPORTWith a soft voice and superb vocal range, Pepe Pinto’s image is that of a popular singer. However, even if he is not the embodiment of a pure flamenco singer, he did help to introduce this music to a wide audience. There is an especially theatrical dimension to his performances, whether of flamenco classics, his own compositions or of sentimental songs.
