the countertenor does soft and wistful in equally beautiful fashion.”

IMPORTCalled “Ouvertüren” in Germany because they began with a large-scale overture à la française, Bach’s Orchestral Suites offer a unique synthesis of the French and Italian styles. The Leipzig Cantor did not content himself with a mere set of amiable dances for his “Collegium Musicum,” he revived the genre in his own manner — accenting the contrasts, refi ning the orchestration and spicing them up with counterpoint. On this new specially priced set, the Freiburger Barockorchester offers benchmark performances of these indispensable treasures of the Baroque.

IMPORTThe Goldberg Variations for harpsichord are a pinnacle of Bach’s compositional output. Like many of Bach’s works, it has been transcribed for many different solo instruments and instrumental combinations. Fretwork’s version for viol consort is one of the most unusual, in that it looks backward in time instead of forward. Bach was essentially a conservative composer, well grounded in the styles and structures of the past. His fondness for the sound of the viola da gamba is well documented and it provides additional justifi cation for re-projecting this masterpiece of counterpoint through the sound-lens of ‘old fashioned’ instruments.

IMPORTYoung British soprano Lucy Crowe is poised to take the opera world by storm. Her powerful, expressive performances have been hailed on both sides of the Atlantic, and a Met debut is planned for the 2012-13 season. On this dazzling new album, Crowe joins The English Concert led by Harry Bicket in a program of Handel arias and cantatas dating from his 1706-10 sojourn in Italy, where he was affectionately dubbed Il Caro Sassone (the dear Saxon).

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channelFollowing their much-lauded Beethoven cycle, the members of the Tokyo String Quartet are joined by cellist David Watkin in a distinguished reading of Schubert’s Quintet in C Major. One of Schubert’s great masterpieces, the quintet is the last and perhaps the most haunting of all his chamber works, in which light and shadow, serenity and drama are presented in constant alternation. The disc also includes the Quartettsatz of 1820 with its lovely, fragmentary slow movement.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe Arie e Lamenti and Madrigali Guerrieri et Amorosi, originally released separately in 1990 and 1994, fi rmly established Montserrat Figueras as one of the fi nest performers of the vocal music of Monteverdi. She forged a new path with her innovative style of interpretation, characterized by fi delity to the historical sources and an extraordinary creative and expressive power. The two Sainte-Colombe albums brought together in the second of these sets were recorded in 1976 and 1992 — the latter right after the tremendous success of the fi lm Tous les Matins du Monde (1991). Nevertheless, they are remarkably consistent in their interpretative style and enable the listener to explore ten of the sixty-seven Concerts for viola da gamba as played by Jordi Savall and Wieland Kuijken. These specially-priced sets, have been remastered for SACD and feature Alia Vox’s usual deluxe packaging and presentation.

IMPORTFrom the mid 1970s until his death, Cuban born Jorge Bolet was considered one of the world’s truly great pianists and one of the last representatives of the great Romantic tradition of pianism. After winning the Naumburg competition in 1937, Bolet seemed set for a great career, but war intervened. His big break fi nally came in the 1970s, when he was signed to Decca and went on to make many award-winning discs. But what of the early years? Here, for the fi rst time on CD, are the four LPs he made in the 1950s. These almost unknown recordings are sure to fascinate and fi ll an important gap in the mystery of Bolet’s early career.
“Bolet was a supreme colorist. Young pianists can learn from the multi-leveled textural differentiation Bolet so gorgeously achieves…”

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDEach of the recordings in pianist Dejan Lazic’s Liaisons series features two composers, exploring their musical worlds, sources of inspiration and degree of infl uence. At the same time, the recordings reveal their most conspicuous differences and their common denominators. Volume three brings together works for piano solo by Benjamin Britten with selections by C.P.E. Bach. Britten’s pieces, in all their minimalism, clarity and sometimes even emotionally restricted formality, contrast with the emerging Sturm und Drang atmosphere of Bach’s sonatas, with their freedom and variety of structural design, delicate expression and extreme unpredictability.
This beautiful collection of music for the Christmas season features selected tracks performed by Jos van Veldhoven and the Netherlands Bach Society, culled from their many acclaimed recordings for Channel Classics. The selections range from music by Bach and Sweelinck to traditional carols. Founded in 1921, the Netherlands Bach Society is the oldest early music ensemble in the Netherlands, and one of the oldest in the world.

Lully’s Atys was so dear to Louis XIV that it became known as the “the King’s opera.” With its unprecedented dramatic intensity, Atys was the fi rst opera to feature a plot that revolved around love and the fi rst French tragedy to kill off its lead character on stage. The opera was revived in 1985 when the Opéra de Paris called on William Christie and the director Jean-Marie Villégier to stage a celebration of the tercentenary of Lully’s death. Resurrected from the ashes, Atys was a key factor in the revival of French baroque music. In 2011, the Opéra Comique once again presented Atys, and that production was fi lmed by FRA Musica for posterity. Featuring tenor Bernard Richter in the title role, supported by Christie and Les Arts Florissants and the amazing production created by Jean Marie Villégier, this fi lm is nothing short of a masterpiece and a milestone in recorded opera.

IMPORTBenjamin Britten’s War Requiem was written for the 1962 re-consecration ceremony for Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed during the Battle of Britain in World War II. The work was not only a public statement of Britten’s anti-war convictions, but also a warning to future generations of the senselessness of taking up arms against one’s fellow men. The libretto of the War Requiem intersperses the Latin Mass for the Dead with nine powerful and highly emotional poems written by Wilfred Owen, a World War I footsoldier who was killed a week before the Armistice. Here, Kurt Masur leads the Israel Philharmonic, vocal soloists and the Prague Philharmonic Choir in a live recording made in 1996.

IMPORTLawrence Power has established himself as the most sought-after violist of his generation and has been favorably compared to the pioneering
British violist Lionel Tertis. Indeed, the three works on this disc were written for Tertis, who did so much to broaden the instrument’s musical repertoire. The two Vaughan Williams works display an unabashed romanticism and pastoral elegance. Flos Campi was completed in 1925 and despite the prominent solo viola and wordless chorus, it is neither a concerto nor a choral work. The seamless viola line moves in unity with the orchestra and the chorus appears as a body of instruments, creating an effect of mesmerizing beauty and calm. The little performed Suite for viola and small orchestra was written ten years later and contains some of the composer’s most lyrical themes. Sir John McEwen’s 1901 concerto is a neglected gem of the viola repertoire and Power’s performance is sure to set a new benchmark. Martyn Brabbins and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales provide expert backing throughout.

IMPORTIn 1793, when Haydn returned home to Vienna after a visit to London, he wrote a set of six string quartets for Count Anton Apponyi, a chamberlain at the Imperial Court. The set was broken up into two groups of three and sold to separate publishers, thus becoming the Op. 71 and Op. 74 quartets. The works possess an almost orchestral sonority, with frequent modulations, dynamic variations and increasingly virtuosic writing reminiscent of the “London” symphonies. Above all, they display the composer’s astonishing elegance, lyricism and immense skill in fusing the profound with the light-hearted. In these compelling interpretations, the Takács Quartet display an absolute unanimity of tone and style and cement their reputation as one of today’s greatest string ensembles.

This new recording opens with Victoria’s fi ve-part setting of the Marian antiphon Salve regina, followed by two of the composer’s masses — Missa De Beata Maria Virgine and Missa Surge propera, which is preceded by its Palestrina model. Released to mark the conclusion of a highly successful American tour, this album fi nds the Choir of Westminster Cathedral in superb voice and Hyperion’s top-notch sound is perfectly colored by the Westminster resonance.

— THE GUARDIAN
IMPORTCharles-Marie Widor was born in Lyon to a family of organ builders and consequently became an organist of great skill and an assistant to Camille Saint-Saëns at La Madeleine in Paris at the age of twenty-four. Today, Widor’s compositions for organ have a prominent position in the instrument’s core repertoire, but it is often forgotten that the composer wrote many other signifi cant works, notably his two piano concertos. Surprisingly, these are the fi rst recordings of the concertos and are a much-awaited addition to the numerous world premiere recordings featured in Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series, now reaching its 55th volume and still unearthing little-known works to consistently dazzling effect. Following the success of his renditions of the Draeseke and Jadassohn concertos, pianist Markus Becker makes a welcome return to the series. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the remarkable Thierry Fischer more than do justice to Widor’s imaginative orchestrations.

IMPORTFollowing the iconic series of the complete songs of Schubert and Schumann, Graham Johnson further demonstrates the phenomenal depth of his knowledge in the expert programming of this recital. Each disc in the series represents a different journey through the repertoire, and thus through Brahms’ life. Hyperion is thrilled to welcome the young German tenor Simon Bode to the label. At home in the opera house and the recital hall, Bode possesses a controlled voice of great beauty, and gives performances of immediacy and conviction. Johnson, as accompanist, is immaculate and his usual scholarly notes are of course included.
IMPORTFollowing the resounding success of Jonathan Plowright’s 2010 Hommage à Chopin, the acclaimed British pianist becomes the fi rst artist to record the album of works written and published in homage to one of the early twentieth century’s most fascinating fi gures — Polish pianist, composer and politician Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Of the twenty-two works on this recording, from composers including Bartók, Martinu and Milhaud, sixteen were included in the memorial piano album Homage to Paderewski published by Boosey & Hawkes in New York in 1942. A further six pieces written for Paderewski also feature, including a Mazurka for two pianos by Britten originally intended for the volume (Britten misunderstood the commission, which specifi ed solo piano), for which Plowright is joined by Aaron Shorr. These diverse works are performed with fl air and dedication.

IMPORTFor this new recording, pianist Stephen Hough travel led to Bergen — Grieg’s home town — to join forces with Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in performances of Grieg and Liszt that are set to become landmark recordings. Grieg’s Piano Concerto is one of the most popular of all Romantic works, while Liszt’s two concertos present unique challenges to both pianist and orchestra. These performances are exciting, magisterial and highly colored, with breathtaking virtuosity harnessed to poetic refi nement and fi nesse — hallmarks of Stephen’s playing that have already helped his concerto recordings to win two Gramophone magazine Record of the Year accolades. The Bergen players provide fresh and idiomatic support in the Grieg and revel in the sumptuous scoring of the Liszt. Released to coincide with the twin anniversaries of Liszt’s birth (200 years ago) and Stephen’s own 50th birthday (in November), this recording is an apt celebration of both.
“He can charm and beguile, and be bold in his contrasts, but he gets on with it, and it is the music he gives us, with true sentiments, and
not merely a take on received ideas.”— GRAMOPHONE

It is a celebratory work comprising of masterful instrumental sections, majestic choruses, and varied solos, duets and trios. Written in 1695, Who can from joy refrain? was composed as an ode celebrating the Duke of Gloucester’s sixth birthday. Both these works reveal the unparalleled richness of the composer’s musical invention and explain why, more than three hundred years later, Henry Purcell is still regarded as one of Britain’s fi nest composers. The King’s Consort and a distinguished line-up of soloists perform this glorious music with a high measure of perfection and fl awless technique.
IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 67279 (034571172798) Deleted August 2011Though he professed not to enjoy concert giving, Percy Grainger was one of the greatest pianists of the earlier twentieth century and had an intimate understanding of the capabilities of the piano and how best to write for it. He possessed a unique compositional voice and was part of the great composer-pianist tradition stretching from Liszt to Busoni for whom the concert transcription was an essential element of their art. This recording, featuring the superb pianism of Piers Lane, contains the majority of Grainger’s concert transcriptions. They range from the folk-inspired Irish Dances of Stanford to the hyper-romantic lushness of his Ramble on Love based on Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier.

IMPORTWhen the doors of an operatic career opened for Ferdinand Hérold in 1820, he took great care to hide away the piano concertos he had written ten years before to avoid accusations of ‘eclecticism.’ Left to languish in obscurity until our own time, these dazzling pieces are indispensable examples of spectacular virtuosity and Romantic sentiment in which the spirit of Beethoven and Schubert is clearly perceptible. This music is a fascinating ‘missing link’ between Mozart and Chopin. On this disc, pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger is partnered with the Sinfonia Varsovia led by Hervé Niquet.
IMPORTThéodore Dubois [1857-1924] is today recognized as a major figure of French Romanticism confronted with modernity. Both profound and sentimental, but always clear and immediately appealing, his ideas found expression in the most varied of genres. The concertante works on this recording evoke the spirit of the great artistic moments of Belle Époque Paris before the Great War. Featured soloists are cellist Marc Coppey and pianist Jean-François Heisser, backed by the Orchestre Poitou-Charentes.

The music made by the trio of Fernando Martins, Edson Lobo and Nelson Serra is in the samba jazz style, an instrumental form that developed in parallel with the bossa nova. New listeners can now discover for themselves the kind of music that was played in the many clubs of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo between 1963 and 1967. Here you will fi nd masterful performances of standards like Baden Powell’s “Berimbau” or Edu Lobo’s “Upa neguinho” appear here alongside rarer themes such as Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Estrada do sol” and João Donato’s “Muito à vontade.” This is popular, accessible music made by musicians of skill and sophistication.

He is considered one of the fi rst jazz musicians to contribute to general music theory with a theory of harmony based on Jazz rather than European music. This specially priced set includes nine classic albums. Included are Electronic Sonata for Those Loved by Nature (I and II), Othello Ballet Suite, Vertical Form VI, Listen to the Silence, Trip to Prillarguri, New York Big Band, The Essence of George Russell and Live in an American Time Spiral. In this exciting SmallsLIVE project, saxophonist Tim Ries explores an original terrain with fellow saxophonist Chris Potter. The group is rounded out by the powerhouse rhythm-section of John Patitucci on bass, Billy Drummond on drums and the fascinating Gypsy-born pianist Kalman Olah. Ries offers some poignant compositional work including the beautiful “New View” and an intricate take on the theme from Schubert’s string quartet in D minor called “Death And The Maiden.” Peter Bernstein, Larry Goldings and Bill Stewart started their infl uential organ trio as music students back in the late 1980s and have all become celebrated musicians on their respective instruments. After recording for Warner Brothers, they toured frequently but the trio was never captured live. Here is an exciting three nights of music, expertly captured in beautiful high-quality audio. Joel Frahm has risen to the top of the ‘favorites’ list of fellow musicians. Generally known for his work as a sideman, Frahm here leads a stellar quartet through a compelling set of original music and a couple of standards. Joined by guitar phenom Kurt Rosenwinkel as well as long-time associate Joe Martin on bass and drummer Otis Brown III (of Joe Lovano’s group), Frahm gets into his typically creative fl ow of ideas and gorgeous feel to create a tapestry of expertly woven material. Rosenwinkel rises to the occasion with some astounding solo work.
DOMESTICFile in: World / Asia / IndiaReminiscence of North Vista, the second volume of the “Nine Decades” series, is a live recording from a private party at Ravi Shankar’s North Vista
home in Los Angeles on August 29, 1969. Shankar moved to the Hollywood house in 1968 and regularly had parties attended by luminaries such as George Harrison, John Lennon, Peter Sellers, Marlon Brando and many others. This recording perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the performances at these gatherings. Recorded just one week after his legendary Woodstock appearance, the set features the Maestro performing two evening ragas with Alla Rakha on tabla (as well as the sounds of crickets and partygoers). This is a unique performance by two artists at the height of their power, performing in an informal setting in front of family and friends.

The orchestra consisted of many of the fi nest Indian musicians of the period, and in these recordings, one senses the excitement Shankar felt at having such resources at his disposal. Not only was he inspired by the players to experiment with orchestration, but he also enjoyed the freedom to explore both North and South Indian systems, as well as use some Western technique. Shankar also maintained his natural inclination for improvisation by recording usually within an hour or two of completing the composition.
