Acti vities of the pr o ject ➢ The Sewerage Board of Nicosia was established in 1971 and the project was initially divided into 3 Stages (Stage I began in 1972 and included also works in areas which, presently, are not under the effective control of the Cyprus Government. Stage II covered approximately 600 hectares including the remaining part of Nicosia within the Walls as well as other areas. Stage III works began in 1988 and was completed in 1995. This Stage covered extensive areas of Nicosia.); ➢ Since January 2002, the sewerage project has been expanding its works in the Government controlled area to cover 6 additional Municipalities and 15 suburban communities around the Greater Nicosia Area ; ➢ In 2003, negotiations began between the representatives of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communi- ties of Nicosia in an effort to build a new Sewage Treatment Plant in Mia Milia in order to increase the treatment capacity to serve the population of the two communities and to improve the effluent quality ; ➢ A relevant feasibility Study was completed in October 2005 and since then there have been several common efforts by the two communities towards Brussels for financial and technical support towards the implementation of the findings of the Study ; ➢ This project is one of the biggest in Cyprus and it includes the installation of 1200km of main sewers, 7 main pumping stations and two new Sewage Treatment Plants. Results of the pr o ject ➢ More sustainable irrigation methods. The treated water from the sewage treatment plants will be used for irrigating public parks, sport pitches and agricultural land, thereby promoting a more envi- ronmentally sustainable method of water resource management; ➢ Reduction of the nuisance and the potential health risks of groundwater contamination associated with the old domestic septic tanks ; ➢ Positive impact on tourism in Cyprus, as well as the economy in general.
