Face Localization using
Template approach based on
Image Enhancing and
Normalized Correlation
Template matching method has been widely used to locate
the faces in the digital image. However, there are some non-
face parts in the image appear to be the face due to
illumination and noise. Therefore, enhancement process will
reduce the localization error by filtering our image to reduce
noise.

Face Localization using
Template approach based on
optimized correlation metric
Template matching method has been widely used to locate
the face in the digital image which it is simple and fast
method. However, there are some non-face parts in the
image appear to be the face location due to illumination.
Therefore, optimization of the correlation metrics will reduce
the localization error by detecting Region of Interest (ROI)
which contains the face. Similarity measurement method
could improve the face detecting and then increase the
localization accuracy.
To propose a new metric between the template
image and the dynamic window in the input image to
detect faces, Metric shouldnt sensitivity to
illumination/noise in image.

Face Localization using
Clustering approach based on K-
Means Modified Algorithm
Image segmentation by using K-mean algorithm has been
widely used to detect the Region of Interest (ROI).
Therefore, this algorithm can be used to locate the ROI
which contains the faces by clustering the input into number
of classes and then extract only the face region. However,
there some parts of the face will be removed in term of miss
clustering. We nee to do the segmentation of the input
image into three ore more classes (non-face part,
illumination part and face part,) will improve the ROIdetecting.
To apply K-means modified algorithm to detect the
ROI that contains the face by clustering the input
image into classes.

Features Extraction and
Selection based on Curvelet and
Statistical Model
Features extraction and selection is the very important step
in the area of face recognition system. Many efforts have
been made to proposed extraction methods such as PCA,
ICA and LDA. However, all these methods suffering from
the face variations such expressions, illumination and
poses. Therefore, Curvelet/wavelet transform has been
proposed to extract an invariant features against these
variations. Since, wavelet transform produce a huge number
of coefficients, Curvelet and Features extraction methods
can solve this problem. In addition, there is a need to select
only the coefficients which are important for classification.
To apply Curvelet transform on the input image in
order to extract an invariant features against the face
variations, and then proposed a new statistical
method to select only the coefficient with high
contribution in the classification.

37 JBJMonitoring of Corrosion in
Pipelines
One of the problems in Oil and Gas industry is the detection
of corrosion in the pipeline. Pipelines are the medium used
in transporting oil from offshore to terminal located in
onshore. The risk of corrosion of the pipeline is due to
contact with the hydrocarbon and water and if undetected
will cause damage to the safety of the environment as well
as loss in production. The proposed project is to monitor
corrosion by analyzing the flow of fluid inside the pipeline.

This project is to investigate and design a new successive
approximation (SA) analog-to-digital (ADC) structure from a
new approach. Specifically, we will approach the design
from data search point of view. If looking at the current SA

Optimizing on-load tap changer
(OLTC) operation of power
ransformer using artificial neural
network (ANN)
Power transformer is an important equipment in any power
system where its function is to change voltage level in the
network. Therefore, specific voltage regulation at their
secondary terminal is vital in ensuring safe voltage to
customer, equipment etc. AVR is the controlling device to
ensure voltage regulation is met. AVR setting and load
profile will determine OLTC operation. Since we could not
dictate load profile then the only means of controlling OLTC
operation is by putting a proper AVR setting. Less OLTC
operation will prolong maintenance period and reducing
maintenance cost.
Voltage and sometimes current from transformer
secondary are fed to AVR as input variable. AVR are
set for their band width voltage deviation and preset
holding time of operation. These 2 setting parameters
depend on load pattern variation. Hence ANN will beused to predict the best setting for AVR.

Fuzzy-Based Tilt and Slope
Measurement Implementation
using a Microcontroller
Tilt and slope meters are useful gauges to have in our
vehicle to assist our judgements as to whether or not our
vehicle is in a safe terrain. A tilt meter shows the sideway tilt
or g-force on the vehicle in degrees. As an illustration, a 30
degree side slope is equal to a 0.50g side or cornering force
of a 50% grade. Further, a slope meter shows the slope of
the hill our vehicle is climbing or descending.
Commercially available tilt and slope meters are mostly
mechanical. In this project, a student is to design a digital
gauge (using fuzzy techniques) to replace the mechanical
(i.e., analog) one. The main components for this project will
be tilt and slope sensors, a microcontroller, an LCD, and a
buzzer.

comprehensive data tabulation and analysis.
83 MZY Ultrasonic Vision System
The aim of the project is to enable a person who is visually
impaired to navigate hallways using an ultrasonic
rangefinder. The rangefinder system may comprise an array
of ultrasonic sensors mounted on top and around a hat to be
worn by the user. The sensors will take data from the
surrounding points of the hallways and provide the
necessary information to a microcontroller. The
microcontroller will then make a decision and guide (by
means of audio signal, etc.) the walker whether to stay in
the middle, move to the right, left, etc. The successfully
executed project is hoped to improve the quality of life of a
person without vision.
1. An algorithm which is capable of converting
information relayed by ultrasonic sensors to actual
distances between the user and the various points of
the hallways. Note that the algorithm must be
integrated inside a microcontroller (e.g., using
PIC16F877, etc.).
2. A fully functioning "ultrasonic vision system"
comprising a hat, electronic sensors, a
microcontroller, a buzzer, and other related
peripherals.
84 MZYSign Language Trainer using
Data Gloves
The aim of the project is to enable a person to learn a sign
language using a data glove. The glove equipped with a flex
sensor is used to detect the positions (bending) of each
inger. The information from the data glove is then relayed to
a microcontroller for further processing. Later, the
corresponding sign language is displayed on an LCD
screen.
A functioning Sign Language Trainer that can
1. detect finger movements correctly (basic
functionality).2. recognize a sign language of the most frequently
used letters (e.g., a, e, i, o, u, etc.) (basic
functionality).
3. identify a hand position that indicates the end of
the current letter (basic functionality).
4. recognize a sign language of the entire alphabets
(intermediate functionality).
5. translate a hand position representing an alphabet
into an audio signal (advanced functionality).

85 MZYWireless Electromyograph
Recorder
The aim of the project is to enable wireless collection and
recording of muscle activities (electromyograph - EMG).
Naturally, EMG action potentials are very small and they
exist when human muscles are mechanically active. The
action potentials can be pre-amplified, recorded and stored
in a computer for further processing. Wireless recording
ensures isolation of the human body from any 240 VAC
which may exist in the equipment under test. Also, a
wireless mechanism also permits the user to move around
freely. In this project, a non-invasive surface EMG shall be
utilized by means of attaching electrodes to pertinent muscle
areas to be investigated.
A functioning wireless EMG recorder comprising
1. a transmitter, which consists of EMG electrodes, a
pre-amplifier, a microcontroller, and a transmitter.
2. a receiver, which consists of a microcontroller and
a computer. Upon receiving EMG samples which
arrive in packets, the receiver shall send theinformation to Matlab for recording (basic
functionality) and further processing (advanced
functionality).
86 MZY Portable Security System
The aim of the project is to develop a portable security
system that can detect (intention of) illegal entry to a house
or a building.
A functioning portable security system that can detect
the following security berach:
1. Touching a door knob.
2. Opening a door.
3. Movement in a room.
87 MZY
Signature Recognition System
using Signal Subspace
Approach
The aim of the project is to develop a novel method of
authenticating a signature from a user. A signature
recognition system consists of, among other things, a
sampling device for preliminarily sampling a signature and
storing data that represent the signature in a memory. Any
signature to be verified will also be sampled and converted
to a vector. The representative vector will then be fed to a
subspace algorithm. The subspace algorithm is responsible
for segregating the significant portions (principal
components) of the signature from the non-pr incipal
components. Later, the principal component portions of the
signature will be analyzed (based on the previously storedsignature information) to determine the authenticity of the
signature.
1. A subspace algorithm that can be used for
signature recognition. (Note: the student will be
provided with sufficient knowledge of subspace-
based techniques. Also, the algorithm shall be
implemented in MatLab.)
2. Performance results (success rate, etc) of
signature recognition system, utilizing comprehensive
samples from various users.

Control System
This is a research-based project in collaboration with Dr.
Truong Nguyen-Vu, of Institute of Applied Informatics &
Mechanics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
Please see the supervisor for details.
The project's timeline can be separated into a
number of phases which would be able to lead to a
number of publishable works:
1. Literature review on existing mechanical
parameter's estimation of motor systems. This will
include relevant simulation studies in order to
facilitate relative comparison between these
approaches.
2. Development of an innovative estimation
method using recursive estimation method and
esting of it using real hardware (i.e. via the setting up
of a simple DC motor speed control system in which
Torque and feedback velocity are measured, etc.)
under various loading conditions.
3. Implementation of auto-tuning algorithm for control
system auto-tuning using these estimates. The
requirements here are that whenever the motor is
started, consistent parameter estimates are obtained
in minimal time period, and the controller shall be
tuned correspondingly to deliver a consistently
desired performance.
