PROJECT III

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE

INFORMALITY TO ORDER IN NEIGHBORHOOD DESIGN

The Project III course provides the student with the ability to read, write, speak and listen effectively, ability to gather, assess, record, apply and comparatively evaluate relevant information within the coursework and design processes. Critical thinking - conceptualizing - interpreting - problem definition and problem solving are the main stages of the studio.

The main objective of the course is enabling the students to perceive, investigate, interpret, and analyze human - space - object (product) - environment relationships in the context of Nature and Culture, to gain creative problem solving skills and to gain the expertise in using the fundamental terminology of the profession. Students can develop design alternatives in relation with the natural, cultural and conceptual context and by taking into consideration the structural, material, construction parameters related to the scale of design through this course.

MODULE I: ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS OF EXISTING NATURAL, BUILT and SOCIO-ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENTS (19 September- 17 October 2019)

This module focuses on various dynamics that shape the relationship between human and environment. We will gather and analyse data on natural and built environments as well as the socio-economic structure, prioritize the gathered data, and produce a synthesis of analyses. We will thus interpret the relationship between man-made and natural systems in urban space.

MODULE II: DEVELOPMENT OF CONCEPT ALTERNATIVES, SITE PLAN (21 October - 28 November 2019)

This module focuses mainly on gaining knowledge and ability of alternative scenario development related to analysis and synthesis of the existing study area conditions studied in the previous module. In this module, students acquire alternative decision making processes by bearing in mind the dynamics of the area. Together with the determination of the potentials and problems of regarding the area, this module enables to achieve concept development and to attain the knowledge of future developments of the space. Household analysis (future users; focused on social, economic and cultural aspects), alternatives of site selection, examination of transportation infrastructure, and production of alternative neighbourhood function schemes are the main components of this module. Based on these researches it is expected to generate these concepts related to users’ demand. Towards the end of the module, the students are expected to select one concept alternative and further develop it as a site plan.

MODULE III: NEIGHBOURHOOD UNIT DESIGN (2 December – 26 December 2019)

Expanding on the concept development selected in the previous module, this module focuses on enhancing knowledge and ability regarding site planning and neighbourhood unit design. The main aim of this module is to enhance the site plan and produce corresponding neighbourhood designs which consist of multiple types of

housing blocks and clusters and a reflection of the associations between the designed neighbourhood and the nearby existing settlement. Accordingly, other essential goals include establishing multi-dimensional connections between urban facilities and housing areas, deciding on the diverse urban facility types and sizes, and examining these areas from an urban space perspective which fosters opportunities of resident-public interaction as well as proximity and accessibility to facilities. Development of the different neighbourhood units with distinctive housing clusters based on household sizes/types and social/physical necessities of dwellers are also within the framework of this module.

Land. Script, as the main theme of the studio, represents the distinctive characteristics of the land which was developed over time with the interaction of nature and culture, human and nature. The studio process is structured around basic issues such as understanding and representing local landscape context by using different drafting and mapping techniques, development of conceptual framework of the proposal and develop the landscape design idea.

MODULE 1. Understanding & Representing the Landscape Idea – the holistic perspective [16.09- 31.10] In the context of the first module students will be dealing with the complexities of the site to develop design idea based on local context of Gölyazı, Bursa. The peninsular geomorphology of the site creates a distinctive landscape setting in which culture and nature merged into one entity. The first module basically focuses on analyzing, understanding and representing the landscape as a multilayered formation by using different tools. Here the landscape idea, how to represent the tangible and intangible components of landscape, forces that shape the landscape and socio-cultural aspects of the landscape will be investigated and going to be used as the main motivation of the studio.

MODULE 2. Development of Landscape Design Idea. Site specific perspective [11.11-26.12] The second module of the studio includes development of design idea with respect to preliminary investigation of the site. With this perspective the main goal of the second module is to develop small scale design interventions which is going to be attached to the existing spatial setting of the Gölyazı. The geographical context, the topography, nature and cultural setting of the site will be questioned to develop site specific designs. The design proposals will be developed for the sites which will be chosen by students in the light of their individual assessments. The potentials of the land, topographical advantages, vista points, natural setting, usage behavior, existing spatial layout, historic and cultural characteristics will be leading parameters for site selections. The decisions on landscape design, the location, spatiality, materiality, structural composition and its relation to topography will be precisely defined by student. The designs should be developed as a respond to the following questions,

What is the main purpose of the design?

What is the context of the design?

How it connects human with nature?

What is the capacity of the design as a catalyst of landscape

regeneration at the site level?

At which level it deals with the complexities of the site and how it

MODULE 1 (16.09.2019-10.10.2019) Mobility as a urban practice: Flexible Info structure: A structure will be designed according to the concept. A collage will be represented to show where those structures will be take place. The structure can be something to give information about the animals and their lives in shelters. A professional will be giving critics on this design process. Plans, Sections and different types of representations will be submitted. The most important part of this project is mobility and flexibly concept. The structures must attach to a car and can be fit to different circumstances and can be adapted to different settings. The project must consider this in their design and material choice. MODULE 2 : (14.10.2019- 26.12.2019) ANIMAL SHELTER: A Socialization and Learning Center

Nowadays, street animals whose number have been increasing rapidly, living in unhealthy environments and antiquated living conditions. Domestic animals in the shelters of municipalities cannot be accommodated at the desired quality * level and optimum health and life needs cannot be required. Today's designers, mostly focusing on human needs, design home furniture, residential interiors, buildings and cities of all sizes with human-based needs in mind. So what are the things that the designer can do for pet shelters nowadays when the humanist point of view is dominant and mostly everything is thought for human and human environment?

Based on these questions, the project topic of the semester was considered as Animal Shelter: As a focus of Socialization and Learning

MODULES& SEMINARS

Commun activities contains workshops and a panel. Two interdisciplinary workshops in small interdisciplinary groups will take place throughout the studio. Interdisciplinary workshops will consist of two main ideas: CREATIVE TOPOGRAPHY and FROM DATABASES TO URBAN STORIES.

COMMON WORKSHOP I: CREATIVE TOPOGRAPHIES (PEM-SBP) The workshop includes direct involvement of instructors and students of Landscape Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning Departments. In the context of the workshop the topographical transects of Gölyazı, Bursa will be modeled by the student groups. Different modeling techniques and representation modes of topography will be investigated and utilized during the workshop. Students are expected to define a path by using the potentials of the topography. Beyond the conventional techniques the workshop invites students to discover different tools to analyze, model and design the topography. COMMON WORKSHOP II: FROM DATABASES TO URBAN STORIES (PEM-SBP-ICM) The workshop will explore the built environment from territorial to local

scale. Supporting lectures on databases and mapping will be given. The students of Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, and Interior Architecture will collaboratively research the ways in which Istanbul’s built environment is structured and produce collective maps and models.

THE PANEL. DESIGN THROUGH COMPETITIONS (PEM-SBP-ICM) The main objective of the panel is to introduce students the culture of design competitions. One-day panel will include professionals who has experiences and hold awards from interdisciplinary design competitions both at the national and international levels. The panel aims to create an open platform in which students can learn about the process of competition, the role of competition as a catalyst of innovative ideas and tactics to deal with limitations and challenging conditions of design competitions from the perspective of professionals.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Other activities such as trips, lectures, juries are considered to support ongoing projects during the semester. The outcomes of these activities are exhibited in colloquium at the end of the semester. The participation to these outings and other activities are mandatory.

STUDIO

Studio is a production space where all students learn from each other through discussions and presentations. During studio hours daily assignments will be given. The work produced will be shared and discussed in order to discover critical qualities related to the problem at hand. Students will develop their work based on studio critiques through home works which in turn will be discussed in the next studio hour. Students are responsible to discover the best means to communicate their ideas using drawings and models.

DISCUSSION

The works are commonly discussed in order to develop proposals of the students. Thus, the students are expected to develop a critical thinking perspective.

PROJECT DIARY

The students are expected to keep a written/visual log of their design process in a project diary; where they keep their sketches, notes and ideas regarding their projects. These project diaries will be included in the assessment process. The students are expected to use various techniques (drawings, diagrams, collages, writing etc.) in representing his/her ideas.

EXHIBITION- MODULEX

Common exhibition will be on the seventh week with all sections.

ATTENDANCE

It is important that students attend the studio and actively participate in all the activities/discussions carried out/held during the course hours. Students are only allowed a maximum of 5 absences. The 6th absence will automatically cause the student to fail the course.

At the end of every studio day a daily visual report will be submitted as a proof of attendance.
