TRANSMISSION AND
DISTRIBUTION GRID
Power travels from the power plant to our house through an amazing system called the power transmission and distribution grid.
The power plant produces three different phases of AC power simultaneously, and the three phases are offset 120 degrees from each other. There are four wires coming out of every power plant: the three phases plus a neutral or ground common to all three.
Transmission grid makes a route for energy travel from power plants to big power substatios or high voltage points.Power plants are connected by high-voltage overground lines.Typical voltages for long distance transmission in the CR are 400 a 220 kV.
High-voltage transmission lines are quite obvious when you see them. They are normally made of huge steel towers like thisAll power towers like this have three wires for the three phases. Many towers, like the ones shown beside, have extra wires running along the tops of the towers. These are ground wires and are there primarily in an attempt to attract lightning.

For power to be useful in a home or business, it comes off the transmission grid and is stepped-down to the distribution grid. This may happen in several phases. The place where the conversion from "transmission" to "distribution" occurs is in a power substation. The first very high voltage (400 or 220kV) is transformed to high-voltage 110kV and part of this energy goes toheavy industrial companies and to the changer for train power supply. The other part is distributed to light industrial companies and towns where is transformated to 22kV.To our households or to small companies go low voltage 230V and 400V.
Distribution grid
Transformation stations are junction points between transmission grid and distribution grid.
The power plants produce the three-phase power with typical voltage 15,75kV and this power is changed in transmission substation at the power plant. This substation uses large transformers 240MVA; 15,75/400 kV.
Transformation
Then power is transformered down to 110kV, 22kV (10kV) in smaller power substations throughout republic. The last transformation to low voltage 230V and 400V runs in concrete small companies, villages and town quarters.
Substations with the transformational power 400/220 kV, 400/110 kV, 220/110kV

SafetyThis power substations has one another function: it often has circuit breakers and switches so that the substation can be disconnected from the transmission grid or separate distribution lines can be disconnected from the substation when necessary.
