Description: Black & white flier to promote a leadership conference for graduates.

Date: October 4, 2015

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 6Brother Ben Pingel

Program(s)/tools: Adobe InDesign

Objectives:The object for this project was to apply the design principles and use appropriate typography while incorporating basic InDesign skills to improve a basic flier layout. We needed to retrieve the image and logo from links and create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process: To create this flier, I first drew up some sketches and from those I created a layout using Adobe InDesign. I used tools such as the selection tools, the fill and stroke tools to create grey boxes, and text boxes to create flow and shapes. Some skills that were used include contrast, leading and tracking, and alignment. I had a balance of white space and kept my body copy small with fonts that i thought were appropriate. My title creates a good focal point while also including the logo, image, and information given. Many skills used are principles of FOCUS such as repetition and rhythm which means there are repeating elements and flow.

Description: A full bleed, photodesign project that includes an original quality image, a consistent color scheme based on that image, some text, and a few design elements to show a company my work.

Date: October 21, 2015

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 6Brother Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:Canon CameraPhotoshop

Objectives:Through this project we learned basic photography skills by taking our own images and editing them in Photoshop. We learned how to choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. In Photoshop I adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE, sized and cropped the image, and then placed it on an 8.5×11 page layout. We practiced repeating elements and printing with full-bleed margins with trimming.

Process:I took quality images and downloaded them onto my computer to edit them in Photoshop. From there I incorporated my color scheme into my layout, adjusted the color balance and saturation, and added repeating elements as well as displaying my color scheme. I put a box behind my quote and changed the opacity of it. Afterwards I sized and cropped the image, proceeding to print and trim.

Program(s)/Tools:

Objective:Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flowUnify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual messageLearn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masksDemonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elementsUse a mask to apply a filter to one part of the imageApply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures…your choice)Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)Select good quality images

Process: I started this project but brainstorming ideas of images I might want to use and quotes that I could pair with them. I went to Nature Park and took some images and then decided to pair it with a picture of Christ and a quote on prayer because it blesses my life so much. I then imbedded the images and edited them in photoshop, applying a filter to one part of the design by copying the layer, then adding the filter and mask it out on part of the image. I masked around Christ to try and blend the images together. I typed my quote and made sure I followed the color scheme when choosing colors as well as experimenting with different fonts. I added some effects to the typography to help it stand out more from the background. I hope you enjoy what I did.

LetterheadDescription:Design and put together a custom matching logo, letterhead, and business card for a company directed towards your audience with an appropriate color scheme.

Date: November 8, 2015

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:Illustrator & InDesign

Objectives:Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign to create a new logo to fit a company or personal image without imitating existing logos or use previous designs. With the new logo design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead with the Letterhead as an 8.5 x 11, full-bleed but trimmed only .125. and business card 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page.Apply typography rules and keep the body copy small. Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space. Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.

Process: In Illustrator I took the camera icon that I had created and copied it into InDesign. I downloaded different fonts from google and wrote out the company name, placing the icon inside of the text. I played with different fonts to create contrast and complete the logo. I created bars to match the color scheme of my logo and then at the bottom I added the contact information of the company.

BrochureDescription: Create a double-sided brochure that is informative.

Date: December 9. 2015

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Ben Pingel

Program(s):Adobe InDesignAdobe Illustrator

Objectives:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document to create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:: First I brainstormed ideas of what I would want to do my brochure on and created sketches on what type of fold I would want to use. Then I created a logo in the Adobe Illustrator program and drew out shapes to create a bridge icon and added the agency name “San Francisco sights” to complete the logo. I used Photoshop to edit my images and to cut out one of the images. The brochure was completed in Adobe InDesign and one of the biggest tools used was the ruler tool to make sure the folds were the right sizes. Tools such as the color wheel, the lasso tool, and the opacity feature were used. Many skills were used in terms of the focus principles, things such as proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast all came together in this brochure.

Magazine SpreadDescription: Create a magazine article with a written personal story and pictures that could been seen in The New Era.

Date: December 5, 2015

Course/Instructor:Comm125Julie Petersen

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Design a two-page magazine spread for the Ensign or New Era. This project could very well launch a new career if you combine good writing skills with the FOCUS design process to create an engaging piece that will communicate your message to the target audience. Your spread may be an inspiring personal experience, or an instructional infographic-style article.

Process:I first wrote up my personal story of over 200 words and created a title for it. I put a background image for the document I set up for my magazine spread and chose a color scheme. I inserted photos and my text, pulling out a quote to highlight and placing it in the layout I had created in my shape map.

Description: This is a screenshot of a website that I coded and created for a friends photography business.

Date: November 22, 2015

Course/Instructor:Comm 130Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:TextwranglerAdobe IllustratorAdobe Photoshop

Objectives:Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 – 500 pixels. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience with a minimum of 200 words including rationale for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML, include all re-quired tags – Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog) Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.

Process:I first found an image to place as the background photo of my website . The process of creating this website included many different programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Text Wrangler. It was a new experience working with css and html and I learned how to connect them and keep improving from there. This website was a multiple step process as I first created the logo and then implemented that into the website I coded and copyrighted. I also linked it to my wordpress blog for quick access to other work. I used tools such as the eyedropper to match my colors, ordered lists, adding headers, creat-ing a copyright, importing a background image and background colors with color codes. I used skills such as learning to work with css and html. I tried to use FOCUs principles to make it as organized and unified.
