Survey Research 2
Introduction
Many surveys have been done around the world. Surveys are a more interesting way of
gathering information. The survey used in this research is entitled Skin Color and Hair Survey. The main
goal of the survey is to gather information of the attitudes individuals having during this day and age.
Many compliments were received on this survey. Many said that the survey had very interesting
questions. Many responses were expected while others were a surprising to see. As a source of
respondents Facebook, students and faculty of Tuskegee University were use. There is not necessarily an
issue being researched, but the attitudes of individuals concerning skin tone and hair textures. There are
a rage of questions that were asked concerning each topic. I expected the male respondents to be more
focused on skin tone than the women and I expected certain responses from women regarding hair
textures. Rationales for such responses are centered on issues of skin tones and hair textures. Women
are a lot more aware of different hair textures than men. With the responses of male respondents, their
honest opinions will be given on the questions about skin tone.

Survey Research 5
The answer choices given as it relates to gender were male and female. Among the
respondents, 41% were male and 59% were females. As expected more males than females
participated in the survey. There were one hundred respondents in total. The other different
demographic information recorded was the age of the respondents. There were several different
categories used to measure the different age groups. The majority of the respondents that were
surveyed were in the age group of individuals 21 to 24 years of age. The next leading groups
were to those individuals in the age group of under 21. The next highest were those individuals
in the age group of 25 to 40 with 18%. The two lowest percentages belong to those individuals in
the age groups 41 to 54 and 55 and over. Due to the data recorded many of the individuals that
participated were the students from the University.

Survey Research 6
Many individuals have gone to the same school from elementary to middle school and have also
attended school with individuals of the same race. Although that may have been the case man
individuals were made aware of their skin tone on thing field trips and other things of the sort.
According to the data recorded, many individuals reported that they were aware of their skin tone at
the preschool age. With 37% percent being the highest percentage in the pie chart and belonging to
those individuals with the earliest recognition being in preschool, the next highest are the individuals
who recognized there skin tone in their elementary years with 31%. For some, who realized the
difference in their skin tones later for instance in high school may have lived sheltered lives.

The next questioned discussed is in reference to skin ton once again. African Americans have
experience such heart wrenching pain due to their skin tone, were individuals in the age ranges of 40
plus there would have been more responses for some of the time. Considering many respondents were
from the younger age groups there were several respondents that said that they have hardly ever
experienced any issues with their race with 45% of the responses. The next highest goes to those
individuals that responded “some of the time” to the question being answered, with 24%. The next
highest number of respondents answered the question as “very seldom” with 18% of the responses.

The next question in the discussion is also related to skin tone and it is solely answered in
reference to the opinions of the respondents of the survey. The majority of respondents of this question
28% agree that the African American community is still suffering from issues concerning their skin tone
from their own people. It’s sad to see that some individuals still believe that there are issues like such.
With the next leading amount of respondents being equal there are 27% that believe that there is not a
certain skin tone that is found to be more attractive to another.

This particular question speaks for itself. Of the one hundred individuals surveyed, 62% believe
that there is no such thing as good hair and 38% believe that there is such thing as having good hair.
There was comment written on one of the surveys that stated “All hair is good hair”. As one can
conclude 61 other respondents agreed with that way of thinking. Personally if your hair grows it is good
hair. If one knows how to train and treat their hair it may even change one ’s hair to a better texture.
However, all answers are opinions therefore there are no right or wrong answers.

Survey Research 10
Majority of the individuals that answered this question have a neutral response, which doesn’t
agree or disagree with the question. The next highest numbers of respondents believe that hair textures
do not make anyone more attractive and 22% strongly support that idea. In opposition to those
responses 21% agree that hair texture can make you more attractive and 7% strongly support the idea
that hair texture can make an individual more attractive. With the different ways to style hair and
change one’s hair anyone can change their hair texture by using simple steps.

Survey Research 11
As reported once before many of the respondents of the survey were female individuals. As
data reports, 40% of the female respondents believe that hair texture is more important to women. Of
the male respondents 52% of those respondents believe that texture is also very important to women.
Many males will just deal with the hair texture they have and go with it. Whereas women will try all
kinds of treatments and things to change the hair texture that they have. Overall one can conclude that
hair texture is more important to females than males.

Survey Research 12
Many individuals have their opinions when it comes to skin tone and hair textures but many
people take it to extremes when they become discriminatory when it comes to potential mates. Males
in particular, cared less about their potential partner’s hair textures. Women are more “picky” when it
comes to everything. Of female respondents, 28% feel that it will not affect whether they choose and
individual for a mate or not. However, there are some individuals of both sexes that believe that hair
textual is something that they will look at considerably both extremely and moderately. A person’s hair
texture can be changed and to see that some individuals discriminate on a person’s hair is somewhat
disappointing.

Survey Research 13
The last question discussed is on that is focused on an individual’s hair. The question asked here
was “ Do you think that the kind of hair you have impact how others perceive you?” Majority of the
female respondents answered “yes” and 22% males also said “yes”. Many individuals get looked over for
job promotions because of their hair. In some instances a simple hair cut can take you a long ways. In
professional environment a clean cut is more accepted over dreadlocks. Hopefully some other questions
asked in the survey mad individuals think about things that they didn’t think about this before. One
another aspect I hope some individuals reevaluate their way of thinking and be more open- minded.

Survey Research 14
Conclusion
The survey was designed to make individuals think and reevaluate their personal beliefs. Also
hopefully individuals have realized their own biases and will work towards changing them. Overall,
hopefully individuals will become more open- minded when it comes to certain things and realize there
are things more important than skin tones and hair textures when it comes to people evaluating others.
